White House Criticizes Bishops, Trumpets Support from CHA, Catholic Charities

Insisting that it is “dangerous” and “wrong” for women not to have access to contraceptives free of charge, the White House press secretary asserted that the US bishops “never supported health reform to begin with”--prompting a rebuttal from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

During the February 13 White House press briefing, Press Secretary Jay Carney was asked a lengthy question:

On Friday, you seemed pretty satisfied that the contraception issue had been settled and you wanted to move on. But the bishops put out a statement saying that it still raises serious moral concerns, and said the President's plan "continues to involve needless government intrusion in the internal governance of religious institutions." As you know, there's also legislation in the Senate. One would allow any employer to raise a conscience objection to the contraceptive issue. Another one is broader -- even raise conscience objections to any aspect of the rule at all. Is this issue settled? Are you going to be able to move forward? The bishops have control of the pulpit, so to speak, and they have been talking against it.

Carney replied that

the organizations that will be most affected by this -- Catholic Charities and the Catholic Health Association -- have expressed their support for this policy, and we obviously appreciate that.

Now, we never set out with the assumption that everyone would be satisfied with this balanced approach, with this what we believe -- approach that ensures that women get -- all women, no matter where they work, get the preventive services they deserve and need, and that religious liberties are accommodated. And I would simply note with regard to the bishops that they never supported health care reform to begin with, of which this is an important element.

The problem with this is that Catholic Charities, hospitals, schools et al...don’t limit their assistance to Catholics.

That is why the aid from the government is needed, but that aid should not place these charities under the control of the government.

Unfortunately, the ACLU and other liberal organizations have won in court to force these institutions to set aside their religious mission and convictions in order to continue receiving public aid. In some cases the church has chosen to simply end the services rather than cave to coercion.

A smaller version will result in the need to severely limit
those who are helped by Catholic institutions as there are not enough faithful to support the number of people seeking help.

What is Carney actually saying?

That only people who supported Obamacare should have their constitutional rights protected?

That's the way I read his statement.

I read once that Catholic Charities, as well as other groups like Lutheran Social Services, receive millions and millions each year from the govt.....so when it comes to supporting the hand that feeds them, they are on it.....

sickening....

0bama0 will again garner the overwhelming majority of Catholic votes in the elections.

Especially if unreliable and unscientific exit polls with suspect methodology are used to characterize the vote and people like you parrot same.

That is the percentage of the Catholic vote Obama got in 2008.

Key omission: based on unscientific, unreliable exit polls conducted with highly suspect methodology.

They withdrew their support for Obamacare because of concerns over abortion and artificial birth control.

Actually, there were several bishops who had major concerns with Obamacare due to its violation of the principle of subsidiarity.

Archbishop Neumann (KC KS) and Bishop Finn (KC MO) issued a long statement on it. Archbishop Chaput (formerly Denver, no Phila) spoke at length about it, as did Archbishop Nienstedt (St Paul), Bishops Nickless (Sioux City), Doran (Rockford), Slattery (Tulsa) and Johnston (Springfield-Cape Girardeu) also spoke eloquently as well. I am sure there are others, but those are the ones I remember.

But we never heard that part two years ago.

If karma existed, Carney’s husband, Claire Shipman, would get terribly sick from taking oral contraceptives.

Bush won the Catholic vote the election prior. I’d wager it will go back to the GOP in 2012.

I believe in the teachings of the Catholic Church, however the hierarchy sold their souls long ago.

Now, if you have the dollars and donate them to the Church, you can say whatever you want and still be considered a Catholic.

By way of example, my former parish counts Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and several mafia family members as parishioners in good standing.

Between THAT hypocrisy and the shuffling around of pedophiles, I left.

Catholic Charities denies endorsement of Obama administration’s contraceptive coverage policy

A leading Catholic charity group wants the public to know it has not endorsed the Obama administration’s latest policy requiring free contraceptive coverage for employees, despite “mischaracterizations in the media.”
Catholic Charities USA has occasionally been cited as a supporter of the new policy, after the administration announced last week it would no longer require religious organizations to directly offer contraceptive coverage to workers. That’s almost certainly because the White House listed the group on an official blog that cited “praise from a wide range of individuals and organizations” for the policy change.

Along with statements from Planned Parenthood and other supporters was a brief statement from Catholic Charities. The group said at the time that it “welcomes the administration’s attempt to meet the concerns of the religious community” and looks forward to reviewing the final language.
“We are hopeful that this is a step in the right direction,” the group said.
But the organization has since posted a clarification on its website, after that statement was interpreted by some as an endorsement.
