Since matters of faith still matter....[Why Lds White Horse prophecy is 'in bounds' for focus]
Chicago Tribune ^ | Jan. 29, 2012 | Eric Zorn

The Salon article "Mitt and the White Horse Prophecy A close look at the roots of Romney's -- and the Mormon church's -- political ambitions" by Sally Denton will no doubt be dismissed as a religious smear by those inclined to support Mitt Romney...

...if we as an electorate truly did consider totally off limits all questions about what a candidate believes about God, the role of his faith in society and history and how his particular creed dictates that he behaves -- then I'd be fine with declaring articles like Denton's irrelevant if not beyond the pale.

But it's a long tradition in our nation to assign at least some if not great significance to a candidate's religious beliefs -- to use them as a guide to the candidate's character, values and guiding lights. And to place greater and greater scrutiny on candidates the more they stray from mainstream Protestant beliefs. To the point that an avowed non believer would never -- could never -- be elected president based on that fact alone, and it's almost impossible to imagine voters or donors taking seriously a follower of Islam, Buddhism or Hinduism as a candidate for president.

Until that changes, spare me the complaints that critical examinations of Mormonism are out of bounds because, hey, Mormons believe in the divinity of Jesus, so there's nothing further to discuss.

How long have I been saying that?

Here's what I said Jan. 15 in a post:

Gullibility is a character issue. SOME beliefs don't remain upstairs as "abstract things."

They carry over into everyday decision-making.

For example, being pro-abortion isn't simply policy error. It's a horrendous character flaw -- being willing to sacrifice the least of these by dismemberment.

And it's not just gullibility serving as the tremendous character flaw.

It's also the idea that you're a baby god already and about to grow up into an adult god (Mormon/Romney belief). That's not just an abstract "belief" -- but the height of arrogance and pride!

Sorry...but when we're talking about THE leader of the free world, I don't vote for arrogant, prideful, gullible people with those faultlines running all through their character.

And guess what...Voters can -- and do -- take character into consideration whether you like it or not.

...

Oh. And why you're at it...why don't you also just rail against 92% of Evangelicals; 78% of Republicans; 2/3rds of Americans; and 55% of Democrats.

What do those percentages represent? Well, per a late 2006 Rasmussen poll, those were the percentages who thought weighing a candidate's religious beliefs to be important or very important.

Over half of Americans have also said in more than one poll that they wouldn't vote for a Muslim or atheist POTUS candidate. Go ahead. Show you're consistency. Start railing against all those voters.

Go ahead. We're waiting.

Oh...and while we're at it...Mitt Romney also said in '07 that he wouldn't put a Muslim in his cabinet.

Here is something about Mitt personally performing proxy baptisms.

Was watching the History Channel yesterday, they were some thing on UFOs again.
Anyway, the did a ten minute segment of Joseph Smith and how the founding of mormonISM is being researched by UFOologists because it is clear JS was visited by extraterrestrials.
Further, they said mormonISM parallels Native Ameican, Hindu and islamic beliefs.
They also mentioned that the screen writer for Battlestar Galacatica, got his story line from the BofM. (That part I knew from the first episode - from the planet Kolob, the council of twelve........)

Yes...here's what I posted as a FR thread on Friday: Confirmed: Romney family had Ann Romney's atheist father posthumously baptized into the Mormon...

The angel MORONI, that brought these gold plates is going to be upset with you over this post.

It doesn't say what you think it says.

You should read it with a pair of Moroni™ 3-D decoder glasses.

Joseph Smith founded his cult in my area of NY. All our circa 1877 history books say the same thing...Phoney as a $3 bill and will soon be gone.

In my mind, once a cult, always a cult. A very profitable cult though.

Wish I had caught that show. From what you said, it was very enlightening. Maybe they will rerun.

It was very interesting. The History Channel seems to love UFO stuff. It probably will be rerun.

Mormons say Moroni was a man who died.
Then, like the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" and what's part of secular American folklore, claimed that this man "got his wings" and became an angel.

And now instead of a cross, which Mormons eschew, we find this dead man on top of Mormon facilities.

Leave it to Joseph Smith to build an entire religion around...
...a ghost masquerading as an angel appearing to him (remember, Islam started because Mohammed was repeatedly visited in a cave by what he originally thought a jinn that was appearing to him...jinn is a demon...a relative had to convince him that it was the "angel" Gabriel)
...oh...and who else did Joseph say visited him at the start...when he was 14, 15, or 16 years of age??...Smith uses all three ages to describe the first manifestation in various versions in later accounts...Well, in the "official" account that is Lds "scripture," found in the Pearl of Great Price, Smith recounts a vision but NEVER NAMES the entities who appear to him. Yes, one is supposedly the "son" of the other; but neither are ever named...

Curious. When God appeared to Moses, He identified Himself as "I AM."

And how do we know these entities are highly suspect?

Well, if you read over the Apostles Creed, there really isn't anything objectionable in it from a Mormon perspective. Yes, the word "catholic" is used...but when the Apostles Creed was written, "catholic" -- small "c" -- just meant "universal."

So...if there's absolutely NOTHING objectionable about the Apostles Creed from a Mormon perspective...then why did these unnamed entities tell Joseph Smith that ALL of the creeds of the Christians sects were an "abomination" (putrid) to them? Wouldn't they have qualified that?

And if the Mormon god is so into "religious liberty" and "tolerance," why would he have made such an over-the-top false statement about the Apostles Creed? (I can certainly think of a few entities from beyond this world who would deem ALL of the Christian creeds an "abomination" to them!)

I printed that White Horse article out and gave copies to my 91 y/o mother and a friend of hers.

They freaked out, saying almost in unison, "OMG, are the people in Florida aware of this?"

Could it be a factor what you had mentioned in post 12 why the Christian churches view the Mormon faith to be NOT a Christian church?

Sally Denton, the journalist who wrote the Salon piece, wrote a book on the Mormons' initial 9/11 actions as domestic terrorists ...see Mountain Meadows massacre analysis ends with an accusation and MHA in St. George: Welcome to an exciting time! [Mormon History]

Sally Denton was an investigator for Mormon columnist Jack Anderson. Anderson was a Mormon missionary; wrote for the Lds church owned Deseret News early in his career; had nine children.

If only Jack Anderson had taken on the history of the Mormon church the way he...
...was an early infiltrator of Mormon polygamous sects;
...took on J. Edgar Hoover...
...took on Nixon in the 1960 election and beyond...
...took on the CIA...
...and as recounted on Wikipedia...covered organized crime, the Kennedy assassination, Chappaquiddick, Watergate, fugitive Nazis, the white supremacist group the Liberty Lobby and other far-right organizations, the death of Howard Hughes, the ABSCAM public corruption investigation, the investigation into fugitive financier Robert Vesco, the Iran-Contra scandal, and the activities of numerous Washington agencies, elected officials, and bureaucrats. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Anderson_(columnist)

Not really; as true Christians KNEW it to be bogus from DAY ONE!
