Berwyn, IL After years of declining membership, two Lutheran churches in Berwyn recently were forced to merge.
While the new church faces many issues as it struggles to adapt to modern society, no one seems to have any qualms about the new pastor, the Rev. Julie Boleyn, who was ordained Jan. 14.
Calm, charismatic and serene in the strength of her faith, Boleyn also is the first lesbian to be ordained in the Greater Metropolitan Chicago Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
For several years, both the United Berwyn Lutheran Church and the First Lutheran Church of Berwyn the two congregations that merged to create Unity Lutheran Church of Berwyn were known for as reconciling in Christ churches that accepted openly gay and lesbian people as members.
So when it came time to call on a new pastor for Unity Lutheran, their leaders orientation wasnt an issue. Instead, the congregation looked at the leadership qualities of each candidate, said Wayne Parthun, a council member for the new church.
I think you have to look at the realities of life today. It's just the idea that, let's look at what this person brings. Their orientation, private-life wise, it's not an issue, Parthun said. Nobody even flinched when the recommendation was made.
Boleyn, 36, has been married to her partner since 2004, and the couple has a 3-year-old daughter. And her ordination has not only been handled with complete acceptance, but a welcome indifference, she said.

I wouldn’t compare this organization with the Catholic Church in any way, shape or form: most particularly on this issue.
* as of August 19, AD 2009, a liberal protestant SECT, not part of the holy, catholic and apostolic CHURCH.
Christ is in our midst!
Only Christ is mentioned as having a seamless garment.
These two churches are not of seamlessness or Christ.
I suppose some churches would hire Jezebel if she were around. There is no limit to their wickedness.
“They have a form of godliness, but deny the power therein.”
God will not be mocked, especially in His sanctuary.
My orthodox LCMS congregation has been "forced" to expand its physical facilities.
If you do not, then you do not catch my comparison. Just as the Roman Catholic Church has siezed upon the claim of "the Church", but misses the Gospel by a country mile, this Lutheran "Church" lays claim to the title, but is wide of the mark. The RCC errs by substituting sacerdotalism, mariolatry, indulgences, sacraments, confessionism, papalism, veneration of the "saints", and a host of other un-biblical doctrines for the biblical doctrine of grace. Similarly, the Lutheran Church in question teaches homosexuality, women eldership, child baptism and a host of other un-biblical doctrines in place of grace. While Rome does not advocate those particular errors, I was pointing out that claiming a name as a "church" does not make it, nor the Lutheran "church", a true assembly supported by God.
Nope, didn’t miss your comparison, just don’t accept your opinion on this issue or the Gospel or the Church.
Sorry.
“Homosexuality AND child-sacrifice! THERES a marriage made in heaven!”
or Hell.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle!
Certainly your prerogative. Doesn’t change reality.
Sorry.
I’m glad my grandparents go to a strict Lutheran church. I believe it’s the Missouri Snyod. My great-grandfather was a
Lutheran pastor. He was strict.
You had to bring it up in this context.
Reality is your “claiming as a church” has as much as or less than the authority of the church in the article.
I was baptized in Lutheran Church. I do think there is a conservative branch left, perhaps it is the Missouri Synod. If anyone has that info, I’d appreciate hearing it.
These people are just playing at “church”. There’s no reality in it. It’s pretty pathetic, really.
The big problem is when these people present themselves as “ordained ministers” and a “Christian community” when they’re pushing some social or political issue, as they always do. Then they can use their bogus “authority” to fool the sheeple into accepting their leftist, “human rightser” causes. But their “ordinations” and “communities” are shams, so no one should believe or follow them.
Yes you’re right, the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod is very conservative.
I,too, was baptized in the Lutheran Church by my great-grandfather on my mother’s side.
I have since converted to Judaism.
