When the Detroit Lions Stephen Tulloch sacked Tim Tebow in the first quarter of their week eight matchup, the linebacker immediately kneeled next to the prone Denver quarterback, in a mockery of Tebows habit of praying on-field, most recently seen after his miraculous fourth-quarter comeback against the Dolphins the week before.
The insult coincided with and reinforced the explosion of Tebowing as an Internet meme, complete with a Twitter account and web-site. There you can see an act of communion with ones creator rendered as a bit of pop-cultural ephemera, and you can scroll through pictures of folks striking the pose everywhere from Oxford to Istanbul, with that muddle of irony and enthusiasm that has become my generations trademark.
But there isnt an ironic bone in Tim Tebows body. Thats what makes him conspicuous. Thats what makes the fact that hes managed to stay squeaky clean, in a sport that notoriously is not, conspicuous. And its why the power of Tebows evangelical-Christian faith, and the earnestness with which he professes it, seems to annoy so many people.

I do not like Sunday football, and do not watch it. But his playing on that day does not make or break Tebow’s Christianity. Maybe it is time for the world to see how a real Christian can play a game and NOT serve Satan in it.
And I hope they lose the rest of their games. That Lions player was mocking more than Tim Tebow.
God is under control of our world. Satan is under His control too. We DO live in a world that is OFTEN at enmity with God, but ... there are 1 billion Catholics and 1 billion Christians. From a world where there were ZERO Christians...I'd say that Our Lord has things well under control.
Satan knows that his days are numbered. At the end of the world he will be cast down permanently to hell and he knows that. To God 1000 days is like one and vice versa. To me 1000 days is FOREVER, but there ya go.
I DO what you are saying, though, and I'm not arguing. I happen to feel optimistic today. And...I know that God will win. He created Satan and He can destroy him. He who creates, controls.
I love him and admire him for sticking to his faith, whatever his denomination. Maybe God has decided to help him out a little bit.
He is making his critics look like fools. How sweet it is. !!!
Thank you for a thoughtful reply.
I'm sure you're familiar with when Jesus was accused of being possessed by the Devil for performing miracles on the Lord's Day.
There is no question that the devout can be very much in the background, but I don't believe someone being very public necessarily indicates a lack of true faith.
I met his Mom last year in Jacksonville last year... Met someone who shared the Tebow name who was working toward being a dishwasher... Err Deacon in thier parish.
Not Catholic... But I sure wish Phillip Rivers played the game and spoke evangelized like Tim.

If you don't mind saying....what is your religion?
Amen!
One thing I've noticed with Tebow is how he handles criticism from his coaches and mgmt. He supports their opinions and works harder to improve. I've always loved his Christian witness, but didn't think he would make it in the NFL as a QB. Now I think he might do very well. He's making steady progress as a player.
The smell of death to those who are perishing
God knows exactly what He is doing when He works out His will in our lives - and we see God's glory every Sunday in Tim Tebow.
This is a really interesting point. We notice Tebow and his non stop profession of faith because we have moved so far from our Christianity.
Without doubt, there are paparazzi out there looking to find Tebow doing something, anything, so they can point to him and say “SEE! He isn’t so great!”
I've thought that, but he seems to be improving as he plays more games and he seems to be very receptive to hearing what his faults are.
I think he really witnesses his faith in how he responds to those that mock his praying. He seems to truly love his enemies.
Hopefully there is a Christian in that clubhouse that can explain it to him.
Amen.
It does not speak well of us as a "Christian nation" that the enthusiastic Christian is mocked and the one mocking the Christian does not receive rebuke, but is instead imitated and his act becomes part of the lexicon of the culture.
Is Sunday the Sabbath?
Let me get this straight, because he is engaged in a profession that requires him to work on Sunday he is encouraging idolatry, wasting his time and breaking the Sabbath? So I suppose that all those people working in hospitals, fire stations, restaurants, etc, etc are doing the same? Oh I wish we could all be as holy as thou.
I'm with you!
He is so in everyone's face about his faith he forces people to think. I'm sure there are a lot of people who initially are turned off, but I believe some get convicted by the Holy Spirit and think twice about what they are criticizing.
My wife once commented to me how she was turned off by a street preacher standing on a corner with a bullhorn. She thought it wasn't very dignified. We talked about it. My point to her was you don't know how many walk by that Preacher and they hear The Gospel for the first time. I think Tebow's exuberance in expressing his faith is a little like that. What's really exciting is the more you learn about him the more you see he lives his faith.
I wish people would just stop cracking on this guy. He has a love of God and he shows it, so? Does that make men on a field and in sports uncomfortable? Maybe they should re-evaluate their own lives. I just can’t get over the mocking of this kid. Their jealousy is apparent. Listen, when he played in college, I was not a particular fan, since we are a nole’ family. But, when he was a senior I said, this kid has heart and a soul. Now I’m a believer that he can make it and it doesn’t even matter, cause he will be a success at whatever he does.
