Precious Promises of the Book of Mormon
Ensign ^ | October 2011 | Thomas S. Monson

Posted on 10/27/2011 7:27:20 AM PDT by Saundra Duffy

Many years ago I stood at the bedside of a young father as he hovered between life and death. His distraught wife and their two children stood nearby. He took my hand in his and, with a pleading look, said, “Bishop, I know I am about to die. Tell me what happens to my spirit when I do.”

I offered a silent prayer for heavenly guidance and noticed on his bedside table a copy of the triple combination. I reached for the book and fanned the pages. Suddenly I discovered that I had, with no effort on my part, stopped at the 40th chapter of Alma in the Book of Mormon. I read these words to him:

“Behold, it has been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of all men, as soon as they are departed from this mortal body, … are taken home to that God who gave them life.

“And … the spirits of those who are righteous are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles and from all care, and sorrow” (Alma 40:11–12).

As I continued to read about the Resurrection, a glow came to the young man’s face and a smile graced his lips. As I concluded my visit, I said good-bye to this sweet family.

I next saw the wife and children at the funeral. I think back to that night when a young man pleaded for truth and, from the Book of Mormon, heard the answer to his question.

Every time you post on a thread related to Mormonism you try to steer the conversation to your Judaizer philosophy. This thread is clearly about the Book of Mormon and its related teaching.

Start your own thread about your Judaizer views.

Even with a supposedly restored and properly translated Bible, the LDS church still insists on offering a disclaimer that they don't know if the Bible (KJV, JST, or otherwise) is translated correctly or not. Not exactly the kind of assuredness I'd expect from an organization led by a prophet.

Wow, that's a great point. And what do Mormons say about that?

jesus christ is my savior; He died for me to save me from my sins;

Not if you are a Mormon woman he didnt...

The mormon jesus is only for the mormon males...

As a Mormon female you have to rely on whether or not your Mormon husband really wants to call you from the grave...

If hes had a bad day at the office or a toothache or little Nephy got only a B or hes chasing the neighbors daughter, the wife wont ge going anywhere...

struck in her grave forever...

and from what Ive read from the posts of Mormon males in the last few years they appear to be hard hearted and aggressive towards women and not very sporting or sympathetic or compassionate when it comes to females of any age..

ya better watch out
ya better not cry
ya better be good
Im telling you why

Mormon wives are not promised a rising

Actually, before I joined the Church, I had no idea that Mormons even believed in the Bible. I had believed all the lies told me by pastors and teachers from the other churches. I had no idea that LDS has the Priesthood. I remember saying things like, “Joseph Smith thought he was Jesus Christ” and blah blah blah. Ignorance!

ALL: Cut & paste this into your files for the next time a Mormon tells you that those in other churches say "'Joseph Smith thought he was Jesus Christ' and blah blah blah. Igorance!" like Saundra has just done:

Exactly 100 years ago THIS VERY MONTH, Lds "prophet" Joseph F. Smith uttered: "Why should men be embittered against you...because of your belief in Joseph Smith." (Lds "prophet" Joseph F. Smith, Gospel Doctrine 2:140, published by the Mormon church's First Presidency 1971).

In the same book, Joseph F. Smith uttered another time that Mormons "revere him, and they love him, as they love no other man...." (p. 284)

Hmm...No other man competes with Smith for Mormons, eh? (Not even Jesus Christ). Smith gets the primary "reverence."

Look, too, at the Biblical references for Christ that Mormons twist & turn to apply to Smith as a "substitute":
#1 "he was led like a lamb to the slaughter" (Isaiah 53:7 -- Isaiah's words about the Messiah, Jesus). What do Mormons do?

They apply them to Joseph Smith! The 8th Lds "prophet" of the church, George Albert Smith quoted "I am going like a lamb to the slaughter" as something Smith usurped for himself! (Source: Teachings of Presidents of the Church, p. 538, cf. p. 536, 2007, published by the Mormon church)

#2: Mormons try applying Acts 3:22 as a prophetic reference to Joseph Smith. Wrong! It's about Jesus Christ! So even in places like the Bible Mormons superimpose Smith upon Christ!

Here, Saundra usually mentions Jesus Christ as her savior. Why don't we hear the rest of your testimony, Saundra? Why isn't portions of D&C 135:6 -- written by Brigham Young -- part of your testimony?

Per Young, the Smiths' deaths (along with his brother, Hyrum) "cost the best blood of the the nineteenth century to bring them forth FOR THE SALVATION OF THE WORLD...they lived for glory..."

Wow! Saundra! Just wow! Here we thought Jesus' blood for the world was enough, per John 3:16. Yet here we find out Mormons and Mormon "scripture" places the gun-battle deaths of the Smiths as having died "for the salvation of the world."

So the Smiths are the world's "saviors," too, eh, Saundra? Yours, too?

And YOU have the utter gall to accuse us of misinterpreting these plain-as-day words -- as if we can't read plain English. You insult our intelligence!

When one places the academic fraud of the JST together with the Book of Abraham, the kinderhook plates, the Greek Psalter incident, and the Book of Egyptian Alphabet and Grammar, it totally destroys any credability that smith had the gift or ability to translate ANYTHING.

This is probably why Mormons don't have paid clergy. They wouldn't want anyone dedicated to researching the truth or have the time to notice the contradictions between the Bible and their Three books.

Oh they have a level of paid clergy - the prophet and apostles receive pay (and i believe the 70 as well). That said, mormonism has no truely organized theology - hence the constant nailing jello to the wall responses. Why - because the next prophet can receive a new revelation which cancels out any previous revelation that doctrines were based upon - ie polygamy, blacks, etc.

Right...started by a member of LDS. If it was started by a Christian you would have a point. You can challenge her...but I cant challenge you. okay

Salaries of mormon “pastors”

The 70’s receive the equivalent of 70% of the average of their previous 5 years earnings. This allows them to maintain the same standard of living that they are used to while working in their career field. They also receive perks such as business class travel which can be upgraded to first class due to their frequent flier status on various airlines. Also, they are encouraged to write books or have their journals/thoughts published and they are paid a premium in royalties for book sales.

The 12 Apostles receive, on the average, of $240,000-$360,000 per year, according to seniority, in “living allowances”. They receive the same perks as the 70 including business class travel. In addition they have individual expense accounts that are paid for by church funds. They are not held accountable for what they charge on their cards and some of the brethren are frugal and treat the funds as they should while others feel it is their “reward” and spend like a drunken sailor on leave.

The Prophet can, at his choice, live in the church-owned condominium in downtown SLC. He also receives $480,000 as a living expense. He travels by private aircraft provided by Huntsman Chemical Company and while he is away from SLC is given preferential accommodations in Marriott hotel properties- Presidential Suite or similar. He also has a church paid security staff, and VIP treatment wherever he travels.

All of the leadership have free health care paid by the church, their children and grandchildren qualify for a free education from BYU, and many get sweet deals on cars, travel, furniture, construction, etc., from companies who do business with the church. They chalk it up to the cost of doing business with the Morg.

The topic of tithing. 85% of all tithing revenues go toward the operation of church education. BYU, BYU Hawaii, the MTC, Institutes, and Seminary fall into this category. Between 8% and 10% goes into the actual running of the church. The church has vast commercial interests that support the majority of it’s building, farming, and like business operations.

BYU-Hawaii Tithing funds support 4,000 students on Oahu. The President of BYU-Hawaii is quite proud of that fact and appreciated the members of the church supporting his campus.

I think if any mormon was honest, they’d know that Joseph Smith was hardly a humble man. He talks and acts as if he’s was the second coming of Christ. Yet, he performed no miracles, he lusted after women and he used occult tools.

My testimony is clear for those who have ears to hear: Jesus Christ is my Savior;

The Spirit of Apostacy lurks at your door; Saundra!

Your views do NOT line up with Great Leaders of MORMONism views!

"He (Joseph Smith) is the man through whom God has spoken... yet I would not like to call him a savior, though in a certain capacity he was a god to us, and is to the nations of the earth, and will continue to be."
 - Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 8:321

"You call us fools; but the day will be, gentlemen and ladies, whether you belong to this Church or not, when you will prize brother Joseph Smith as the Prophet of the Living God, and look upon him as a god..."
- Herber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses 5:88

"If we get our salvation, we shall have to pass by him [Joseph Smith]; if we enter our glory, it will be through the authority he has received. We cannot get around him [Joseph Smith]"
- (as quoted in 1988 Melchizedek Priesthood Study Guide, p. 142)

There is "no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith. If Joseph Smith was verily a prophet, and if he told the truth...no man can reject that testimony without incurring the most dreadful consequences, for he cannot enter the kingdom of God"
- Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, p.190

"I tell you, Joseph holds the keys, and none of us can get into the celestial kingdom without passing by him. We have not got rid of him, but he stands there as the sentinel, holding the keys of the kingdom of God; and there are many of them beside him. I tell you, if we get past those who have mingled with us, and know us best, and have a right to know us best, probably we can pass all other sentinels as far as it is necessary, or as far as we may desire. But I tell you, the pinch will be with those that have mingled with us, stood next to us, weighed our spirits, tried us, and proven us: there will be a pinch, in my view, to get past them. The others, perhaps, will say, If brother Joseph is satisfied with you, you may pass. If it is all right with him, it is all right with me. Then if Joseph shall say to a man, or if brother Brigham say to a man, I forgive you your sins, "Whosoever sins ye remit they are remitted unto them;" if you who have suffered and felt the weight of transgression—if you have generosity enough to forgive the sinner, I will forgive him: you cannot have more generosity than I have. I have given you power to forgive sins, and when the Lord gives a gift, he does not take it back again."
 - Orson Hyde, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p.154-155

"It is because the Lord called Joseph Smith that salvation is again available to mortal men.... If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation,"
 - Bruce McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 396, 670

They succeeded in killing Joseph, but he had finished his work.
He was a servant of God, and gave us the Book of Mormon.
He said the Bible was right in the main, but, through the translators and others, many precious portions were suppressed, and several other portions were wrongly translated; and now his testimony is in force, for he has sealed it with his blood.
As I have frequently told them, no man in this dispensation will enter the courts of heaven, without the approbation of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Jun.
Who has made this so?
Have I?
Have this people?
Have the world?
No; but the Lord Jehovah has decreed it.
If I ever pass into the heavenly courts, it will be by the consent of the Prophet Joseph.
If you ever pass through the gates into the Holy City, you will do so upon his certificate that you are worthy to pass.
Can you pass without his inspection?
No; neither can any person in this dispensation, which is the dispensation of the fulness of times.
In this generation, and in all the generations that are to come, everyone will have to undergo the scrutiny of this Prophet.
They say that they killed Joseph, and they will yet come with their hats under their arms and bend to him; but what good will it do them, unless they repent?
They can come in a certain way and find favor, but will they?
 Brigham Young,

--JOURNAL OF DISCOURSES, vol. 8, p. 224

It could be after a fashion. some of the ardent mormons would argue that the 'translation' was never finished, so it couldn't be accepted into the canon of mormon scriptures - that combined with the fact that the RLDS hold the rights to it.

But it WAS!

I call not 'knowing' that a LIE!
