Abp. Dolan to Obama: Cease Attacks on Marriage or Risk “National Conflict…of Enormous Proportions”
Catholic Vote ^ | September 22, 2011 | Thomas Peters

Wow. This definitely represents a significant escalation of tone and includes the threat of consequences if the Obama administration does not, as this letter from Archbishop Timothy Dolan to the President calls for, “push the reset button” on their multipronged efforts to undermine marriage and treat Catholics who believe in marriage as bigots.

Abp. Dolan is careful to point out that his opinion represents the view of the bishops conference:

The Justice Department‟s move [to undermine DOMA], in addition to other troubling federal decisions occurring recently, prompts me yet again to register my grave concerns. The content of this letter reflects the strong sentiment expressed at a recent meeting by more than thirty of my brother Bishops who serve on the Administrative Committee of our episcopal conference. I know they are joined by hundreds of additional Catholic bishops throughout our nation…

On how Obama’s efforts to undermine marriage threatens the religious and civil freedom of Catholics:

“…it is particularly upsetting, Mr. President, when your Administration, through the various court documents, pronouncements and policies identified in the attached analysis, attributes to those who support DOMA a motivation rooted in prejudice and bias. It is especially wrong and unfair to equate opposition to redefining marriage with either intentional or willfully ignorant racial discrimination, as your Administration insists on doing.”

A frank warning about just how serious and aggravated this situation has become:

The Administration‟s failure to change course on this matter will, as the attached analysis indicates, precipitate a national conflict between Church and State of enormous proportions and to the detriment of both institutions.

Obviously I would recommend reading the entire letter. Especially if you disagree with the US Bishops’ position on the need to protect marriage. The letter includes a 3-page USCCB staff analysis of recent federal threats to marriage from April to August of this year. The evidence is very straightforward.

Good to hear Archbishop Dolan raising his voice on behalf of the USCCB.

I agree with Archbishop Dolan. However, it is important to realize that his statement could very well apply to other Christian denominations as well as to Jews, Muslims, Hindus, etc.

I’m not familiar with marriage as defined by a muslim or hindu—am not familiar with polygamy. The archbishop is no doubt educated in all these religions, but his role (by definition) is only to defend his faith. Respectfully.

God bless and Godspeed Archbishop Dolan. You are a profile in courage.

Muslims,

The DOMA {Defense of Marriage Act states that marriage is between a single man and a single woman, no threesomes or more-somes allowed.

mooselimb males are allowed to have four wives, how would this apply to the religion of pieces?

God bless Archbishop Dolan and all the USCCB. They are coming around to Pope Benedict’s way of thinking and speaking out.

God's plan will prevail.

“God’s plan will prevail.”

Yes, and it is going to cost us to follow God.

Oh well. Nothing good ever came cheaply.

But the wonderful part of this whole scenario — is that when God has had it and decides to do something about it — after that time everyone will come back to the Church. And I do mean EVERYONE!

Yes, and it is going to cost us to follow God.

True, but the cost (any cost) is insignificant compared to the reward.

You may be giving The Won more credit for more literary understanding than he deserves.
