My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Posted on 09/02/2011 9:07:47 AM PDT by marshmallow

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

As was mentioned previously on this sidebar, there remains considerable disagreement over this inquisition revisionism.

When Jewish scholars get in the fray, I'll probably become more curious. Their ancestors were involved in the matter and, AFAIK, mine weren't.

For now, in my eyes it is simply that, revisionism.

"You must be baptized in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; - NIcene Creed

"And Jesus came and spoke unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:" -Matthew 28:18,19

"One Lord, one faith, one baptism," -Ephesians 4:5

"For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ." -Galatians 3:27

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." -Acts 2:38

“The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:” -I Peter 3:21

"Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." -Romans 6:3,4

Yeah, but try explaining THAT concept! They have everything. THey have all the gold, all the art, all the "saints" all the pradas, all the ermine, all the beautiful cathedrals, all the white candles, all the incense, all the "smartest men who ever lived" all the statues, all the everything they think impresses God. They have Parkplace and Boardwalk, complete with all the hotels. You would think they would be the happiest people on the planet!

And yet...here we stand...Bible in hand..and a smile on our face.

Thank you so much for sharing your testimony, dear brother in Christ!

I thank God for those who worked diligently to end the practice of forced conversions, "gentle" torture and so on.

Truly the blame for the great atrocities belongs with the political authorities. That was the point of Rummel's body of research.

Well, that has to be one of the more interesting ways of dismissing reality. You wrote:

“As was mentioned previously on this sidebar, there remains considerable disagreement over this inquisition revisionism.”

Not really. Historians agree on what are and are not original sources. The original sources all agree that the numbers were extremely low. Thus, if someone disputes that he is not disputing revisionism. He is disputing clear historical evidence. Again, all historians agree on what are or are not original sources in these matters.

“When Jewish scholars get in the fray, I’ll probably become more curious.”

So, history only interests you when Jews are involved?

“Their ancestors were involved in the matter and, AFAIK, mine weren’t.”

So? Will the truth change just because Jews are involved? I guess only blacks can discuss the history of slavery?

“For now, in my eyes it is simply that, revisionism.”

Bigots often dismiss what they can’t deal with. And what a convenient excuse for you to not care, not be interested, not do research, etc.

Agree with all that you said. But, nowhere does Scripture claim to hold within itself all the glory, mighty and majesty of God.

It is the story of our salvation, Jesus Christ.

But, to think it is all is to seek to confine God to only those words that we can read and ignore the reality of what He has done.

Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, what God has ready for those who love Him.

You can only guess at what eternal life with God will be like. Scripture tells us only what we can understand in our human form, we do not and cannot know the mind of God nor can we fathom.

Mary’s Assumption is in perfect keeping with Scripture regarding the fact that we know that God has taken, body and soul at least four people to heaven, Enoch, Elijah, Moses and Abraham.

God will reveal what He will, when He will.

And this is where we have a parting of the ways. God has told us who He bodily assumed to Heaven. He told us who they were. He never mentioned Mary. WHy? If she is the Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven and Earth, standing right now at the right hand of Jesus Christ, don’t you think He would have told us she had been bodily assumed? No one else was kept a secret.

"Bigots often dismiss what they can’t deal with. And what a convenient excuse for you to not care, not be interested, not do research, etc."

I do not dismiss these hyper-inflated casualty numbers as a simple misunderstanding or the product of some independent third party researcher nor those who post and defend these numbers as innocent and unbiased. The amount of work necessary to get it right is not that significant.

Well, He did tell us, through the Holy Spirit’s inspiration of Christ’s Church.

As I told you in the past I have never heard of or relied on Barret. Just the independent objective data I mentioned many times

Given at least 30000+ plus discrete protestant entities according to this objective source, how do you correlate this to Jn 17:2 where Jesus prayed that they be one not part of a tens of thousands diversity parade each preening their own message?

How do you explain the existence of these myriad mom and pop store front independent churches. Why the need to keep replicating the reformation? Does it get better with practice?

Did the reformers envision their work would occasion a never ending fractional process among the self interpretative crowd? How does the Spirit chose which of the 30000+ groups or persons to grace with an indwelling?

Since many of the rapture/dispensation crowd expect to be raptured this week, 9/15, do you expect to be chosen or will you be left behind? What about Harold Camping?

If anyone would NOT be a secret, it would be Mary. She is your female EVERYTHING. And you honestly think He would keep you in the dark about one of your most important beliefs? This would be the absolute proof you guys need to prove to the world that you are who you say you are: The Church that God gave to the world. If God had bodily assumed Mary, the Apostles would have been the first to tell the world. After all, Enoch made news in God’s word. And Elijah. But absolutely no mention of Mary. He gave you the “keys to the kingdom” the ability to “retain or remit sins” the “power” to bring His Kingdom about. And yet, He gave you no mention that He had bodily assumed the Queen of Heaven and Earth, the Co-Redeemer of mankind, the dispenser of all graces?

Are you speaking for God? Do you deny all mysteries?
