Churches debate whether to marry gays
AP via SFGate ^ | 7/16/11 | RACHEL ZOLL, AP Religion Writer

After same-sex marriage becomes legal here on July 24, gay priests with partners in the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island will head to the altar. They have to. Their bishop set a nine-month deadline for them to marry or stop living together.

Next door, meanwhile, the Episcopal bishop of New York says he also expects gay clergy in committed relationships to wed "in due course." Still, this longtime supporter of gay rights says churches in his diocese are off limits for gay weddings until he receives clearer liturgical guidance from the national denomination.

As more states legalize same-sex marriage, religious groups with ambiguous policies on homosexuality are divided over whether they should allow the ceremonies in local congregations. The decision is especially complex in the mainline Protestant denominations that have yet to fully resolve their disagreements over the Bible and homosexuality. Many have taken steps toward acceptance of gay ordination and same-gender couples without changing the official definition of marriage in church constitutions and canons. With the exception of the United Church of Christ, which approved gay marriage six years ago, none of the larger mainline churches has a national liturgy for same-sex weddings or even blessing ceremonies.

Excellent point! Even Lot was ready to offer his own daughters to the screaming violent neighbors who wanted sex with the "new guys".

Yet righteous Lot was spared, for he was willing to sacrifice his own flesh and blood to protect his angelic visitors.

“HOW did we get to the point where this is debatable for a Church?”

When we got to the point of not following God's Word...even in the church. The plan all along was to get us to doubt God's Word...Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “DID GOD REALLY SAY, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The plan has continued on since then, that is why God has to continue to remind us to follow Him...John 14:15 “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” and 2 Timothy 3:14-17 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; and that from a child thou hast know the HOLY SCRIPTURES, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

As a culture we have accepted the idea that nothing is absolute and as a result we place ourselves over God and try to tell Him what he meant in His Word...this is never a good idea. If God said it then He meant it...I for one will always side with God's Word...even if the churches will not.

Yeah, his own children's flesh and blood. He may have been "righteous" but he sure wasn't very BRAVE.

You’re absolutely right. Catholics should not be sanctimonious because the lavender mafia infiltrated the seminaries and created the unholy mess of out-of-touch gay priests who wouldn’t understand a NORMAL family problem if it bit them on the butt, to the diabolical preying on boys and young men. The only difference is that catholic DOCTRINE has not changed. Homosexuality, homo “marriage”, divorce, abortion, and even contraception remain the venial and mortal sins that they have always been. I don’t think this makes us hypocrites—the fact that some of those things are observed mostly in the breach. The important thing is that we aren’t being told from the top that those things are no longer sinful and that we must embrace them, celebate them. The framework is there for a return to morality.

the “more than Easter” ignores that the entire number is 600...in the entire city of Boston (and I suspect a lot of non Catholic activists were there).

On the other hand, in the old days, many catholic churches held more than that at each of their four or five services.

Boston’s Church was dead under Cardinal Law even before the pedophilia problem was exposed. The churches were half empty in the 1980’s, and the only “enemy” was, of course, the quiet pious folks. That is why so many Catholic fled to evangelical churches so they could find God.

Don’t know if this bishop is any better...from what I read on his website, he is busy fighting the PC who took over the church, but is afraid to be too harsh on them. Think of it as enemy territory for him.

Hmmm. Did they find Him there?

actually, a lot of them did find the preaching of Jesus was better there...

and a lot return to the Catholic church later, when the Catholic church gets rid of the PC “Jesus loves you no matter what and let’s all hold hands and be happy” types and goes back to preaching Jesus and the “hard” lessons that religion is supposed to answer (why is there death? Why do we suffer? Why are we prone to sin, and what can we do if we have sinned?).

Better than the alternative, which is fuzzy Newage stuff.

That is flagrant disobedience. It is a couple of lone wolves in sheeps clothing. It is not written in the Catholic catechism.

But the other church is putting it in a church document as canon. Big difference.

true, that’s why we conservative Churchs should jointly oppose this. Also the conservatives in the benighted denominations should be supported BY us

We must remain ever vigilant because we KNOW there will be constant attacks on the LCMS.

It's too bad we don't excommunicate members who no longer abide by the Bible like we used to do back in the 50s & 60s when I was a kid.

Don’t know, but I do know I won’t attend one on a weekly basis that does not met my spiritual needs, or beliefs.

Went to church with my baby sis last Sunday, Assembly of God, they went contemporary, and the preacher spent more time rebel rousing begging for money (in a broke church) to open a Mexican Ministry than in preaching God’s word. Band was so loud with their nearly endless contemporary praise choruses (no songs) that I left with a massive headache, and a feeling I had not been in church at all. BTW the preacher had driven off most of the older parishioners in the few months he’s been their my sis said.

In the process of looking for a new church home, which is traditional with a little contemporary thrown in and where the preacher preaches, not just begs. There are more than one generation in a church, which most of them have forgotten and you have to come to a middle of the road with the music. I like the traditional songs, not just these praise choruses they try to pass off as ‘making a joyful noise’ today.

Our Great, great grands didn’t always have a church, all they had was their faith and their Bible. And maybe once in a while a traveling minister on a mule.

Tha happened to my ex-sister-in-law. After she and my brother were divorced, she started shacking up with some guy. The pastor of the church told her she had to get married. Of course, she wasn't just a parishioner, but the principal of the church kindergarten.

Are they contemporary or traditional? He does not want a mega church.

We have friends at Ellendale UM. But that is quite a drive for us.

That little piece of info would make a big difference.

A pretty good blend. Not nearly as contemporary as traditional. We average about 1500 in Sunday School. My class is made up of early senior citizens to older ones. It is a great class and we really study the Bible. There are several retired Navy in the class, all are very conservative politically.

We meet at 8:00 a.m. and the I go to 9:15 worship service.

The people are friendly and the pastor is great. He is on a sabbatical for the month of July, but we've had some great speakers.

I'm just saying give it a try. I will be glad to meet you there.

[One writer's perspicacious comment on the postmodern church's new foundation]

(set to "The Church's One Foundation")

Our church’s one foundation
Is sensitivity
If you are seeking Jesus
This is the place to be
“Judge not lest ye be judged”
That is our only creed
If your lifestyle’s altered
We’ll meet all your felt needs

Our PowerPoints are brilliant
Thanks to the folks at Dell
We’ll take on any subject
That is, except for Hell
Our lives are full of purpose
Why don’t you come on in?
We won’t use ancient labels
Like “wickedness” and “sin”

We call ourselves authentic
(That means we cuss a ton)
We may not preach the Bible
But coffee’s always on.
Jesus, he has a message
For me as well as you
His wisdom for all seekers:
“To thine ownself be true.”
