ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The Diocese of Allentown has found itself the target of a lawsuit that claims a woman was fired for being a Muslim.
Omayma Arafa filed the federal lawsuit against the Diocese in May.
The lawsuit states Arafa, who is a Muslim from Egypt, had no problems as an employee of the Diocese until August 2008, when her supervisor changed.
In the lawsuit, Arafa said her new supervisor, a Monsignor, was not respectful of her religion. She said during Ramada in 2008 he forced her to take a lunch break, even though all she could do was sit at her desk and do nothing since she could not eat.
Arafa said she was fired because the Diocese claimed they could hire an outside company for cheaper than keeping her employed. She claimed since she was a part-time employee who was not offered benefits, the outside company could cost the Diocese much more than her salary.
Arafa also claims she was never offered health insurance, but two other part-time employees, who were not Muslim, were.
She also said the Diocese eventually gave her responsibilities to a younger, non-Muslim male.
Arafa is seeking back pay and damages in the lawsuit.
Attorney Dave Steckel, who represents the Diocese, said he is still reviewing the complaint and declined to comment.
I have family that lives in Allentown. I’m going to get in touch with them and find out more about this. What is a catholic church doing hiring a Muslim?
Socialists and muslims unite against the United States.
This stinks. By law, if she works more than X hours a day, I bet the employer is REQUIRED to make her take a break. Otherwise this silly cow would sue for ‘not letting me take a lunch break.’
Hey, snookie, you don’t have to EAT on your lunch break, dimwit. You can go run an errand, fix your non-existant makeup, change your tampon, or read your Koran. You decide.
Diocese should have never hired her in the first place.
It doesn’t say what her job was. It seems to have been a part-time desk job, so she may have worked for Catholic social services or some such thing.
Why would ANY diocese employ a Muslim? There has to be more to this story than we see here.
This is all going according to plan.
She’s a foot in the door.
Consider this please before you blame the Diocese. There are State and Federal Laws guiding "Equal Employment Opportunity" (EEO) hiring. Plus there are "Human Rights / Civil Rights" Non-government Organizations (NGOs) aiding minorities about job discrimination. You think that this might have factored into this case?
Just last year there was a firestorm around a 31 yo woman who had posted a private ad in her CHURCH for a CHRISTIAN ROOMMATE and was sued by her State's (Michigan) Human Rights and Civil Rights government departments. Yes, that suit eventually went against these government intervenors but this remains a minefield of civil liberty rights and responsibilities!
The secret is not to advertise, but to put out a discreet word in the Diocese that you are looking to hire someone.
Surely some parisioner had a daughter that could use the work.
I tired of being PC, I don't like islam, in my heart I know it's a cult. If your muslim move to a muslim country get out of my country. I have no more tolarence for islam or muslims.
Surely some parisioner had a daughter that could use the work.
/// i’m sure most do that. but sadly, some Parishes embrace diversity, and other liberal themes. a Priest like Father Pfleger would hire a muslim. and many Catholic organizations, are catholic in name only. (Like Notre Dame arresting people for protesting abortion?!?)
...just as many Protestant churches recently had those “readings from the Quran”, and have “inter-faith” events, not knowing that Muslims teach all those christians will go to Hell. there is a reason there are zero churches in Saudi Arabia, even though they have millions of Christian slav... workers there.
ping!
