Designer and model Lisa Burke presented the swimsuit as part of the latest collection of her Lisa Blue label at Australian Fashion Week Thursday.
But when pictures of an Indian-looking model wearing a one-piece swimsuit with a portrait of Lakshmi printed on its front and rear made their way to India, Hindu nationalists didnt like what they saw.
Over the weekend, they took to the streets in several Indian cities, including Hyderabad where pictures show activists burning the Australian flag in protest against what they viewed as an act of deep disrespect.

Do flag dealers have comprehensive retail outlets in your flag-burning type of countries, or are the locals hand-stitching them from household fabric remnants, a la Betsy Ross? And who has the time?
I could probably pick the Australian flag out of a small multiple-choice selection, assuming it has some British elements, but I couldn't just run one up on the Singer machine in time to protest Outrage X from Australia before Outrage Y from Finland occurs.
Flag burning is a good way to make money methings ;-p
The suit in question -- you would think that the designer would have some intellig.. oh, wait...
heh! Though of course the difference can be if we Christians make fun of ourselves as opposed to say a Moslem or Hindu doing that, which is probably what’s ticking these guys off
It is just a thing.
"Um..urm..whu..what was the question again, Alex?"
She is HAWT!!
Please, not ANOTHER religion of perpetual outrage.
Laz would hit that goddess!
I’m thinking Laz would hit that like the Destroyer of Worlds.
Ahhh, shoot! There goes my idea for men’s swim trunks with the god Ganesh printed on them.
To be fair, we need a Mohammed bikini. That would be the bomb....
Could this “outrage” come from years being under the rule of Muslims?
At one time, before the British took over, the Indians were under Muslim rule and a lot of the Muslim practices must have been “copied”.
I think that’s already been done with bodypaint....
That’s a nice early morning wakeup!
Yeah, but what beautiful young woman would want to “hit” Laz is the real question.
Considering the decor of Hindu temples, I can’t see the problem with this portrayal of female deity. Maybe they just don’t approve of women’s going swimming, and would have the same flipout over any bathing suit.
Meanwhile, if some designer were to put a pic of Jesus or the Virgin Mary on a swimsuit, Christians would be expected to take it in stride.
