Catholic Word of the Day: ST. CHRISTOPHER MEDAL, 04-12-11
CatholicReference.net ^ | 04-12-11 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

ST. CHRISTOPHER MEDAL

One of the most popular religious medals of our day. St. Christopher is pictured carrying the Child on his shoulder. The story is told that this third-century saint as a bid-bodied youth served God and his neighbor well by carrying people over a dangerous river that had taken the lives of many. Among those he carried across was Christ himself, who, on one occasion, appeared to Chrsitopher (Greek, Christ-Bearer) in the form of a child. He is the special patron and helper of travelers, especially those who travel ;by plane and automobile. Hence the custom of having St. Christopher is on July 25 and his name remains on the Church calendars of particular regions. It no longer appears in the univerwal calendar because his cultus (like that of many saints) was not originally part of the liturgical tradition of the city of Rome, unlike other early saints, e.g., Sts. Agatha, Agnes, and Cecilia. But the Church has not removed him from veneration by the faithful as a saint.

I remember having a St. Christopher medal in our car. Anyone else?

We always said a family Rosary too when we started out on an automobile trip. I still say one on the airplane or in my car.

On the airplane, I get some strange looks, but I really don't mind. I think sometimes that these people might wish they had this kind of faith and prayer in their lives.

We always had the St. Christopher medal in the car. When I was a kid (late 50s-early 60s), all the WWII Catholic vets wore St. Chris medals. It is associated in my mind with the very best of masculinity! Strange, huh?

It’s NOT about what I like or don’t like - it’s what GOD’S Word says. Does that abhor you? Is obedience to HIS WORD a non issue to you?

There's a distinction made in tradition AND in scripture between 'graven images', which 'you shall not bow down, nor worship them', and representations made in faith.

E.g. - the brazen serpent that Moses set up in Numbers -- that Christ Himself refers to in John 3. Or the cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant in Exodus, which God commanded the Israelites to make.

It's a matter of intention. If you make an image with the intention of worshiping it, that's a problem. If you make an image with the intention of glorifying God, that's not.

Well, I think you’ve answered my question about whether you like Renaissance art...

LOL! Catholics see what they want to see and it has nothing to do with truth. And, more so, when a Christian mentions God's Word and what HE says.

It's a matter of obeying. The Spirit of God lives within Christians. You need an image to glorify God? Don't make things up to soothe 'wants'. You glorify HIM, HIS NAME! Glorify HIM through obedience! Praise! Worship!

Your theological issue was resolved more than a thousand years ago. It's too bad that virulent heresy was revived just under 500 years ago.

Apologia of St. John Damascene Against Those Who Decry Holy Images

During this holy season, the scriptures draw us to a deeper relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. What did He say about posts like this?

His words ring out loudly in Luke 6:27 - “But to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,” In Luke 6:22-23,

He also reminds us: “Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way.”

Your theological issue

Really? 'theological'? 'issue'? I have no issue. If you don't care about obedience to God's Word - I'd say you have the 'issue'.

was resolved more than a thousand years ago.

LOL! And that's supposed to trump God's Holy Spirit inspired Word that ALWAYS was and ALWAYS will be?

Buy a clue - HE/HIS WORD REIGNS, HE/HIS WORD RULES. And everyone will bow at HIS WORD, JESUS for He is The Word.

Are you trying to appear pious or something? LOL! Catholics and their hierarchy are a barrel of laughs when they attempt that.

What part of God’s Word is so repellent to you that you start a thread about a graven image, a medal, honoring man?

You didn’t even read the little post. Who was St. Christopher carrying across the water?

So sad that you cannot conceive of carrying Christ across a body of water. I can, but maybe that is the mother in me.

If you are a father, I bet you can imagine it too.

BTW, you do realize that what Protestants have in their 10 Commandments is different than what Catholics have.

And God works through our hands and feet. Christ died once for us all on the Cross.

It is God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit WITHIN us that reaches out to other people.

Have a Blessed Holy Week.
