There's a distinction made in tradition AND in scripture between 'graven images', which 'you shall not bow down, nor worship them', and representations made in faith.

E.g. - the brazen serpent that Moses set up in Numbers -- that Christ Himself refers to in John 3. Or the cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant in Exodus, which God commanded the Israelites to make.

It's a matter of intention. If you make an image with the intention of worshiping it, that's a problem. If you make an image with the intention of glorifying God, that's not.
