Featured Term (selected at random):

SHIP

A symbol of the Church, usually with a cross on her sails. Frequently the ship is represented in full sail plowing through turbulent waters that are testing her progress. St. Hippolytus spoke of the Church as a "boat beaten by the waves but never submerged." Fishermen saints were often represneted with the ship as their emblem, so too the Apostle St. Jude. St. Brendan, the Irish navigator, and St. Francis Xavier both are symbolized by ships. St. Elmo or Erasmus is called the patron saint of sailors, and the phenomenon of St. Elmo's fire, often seen at sea, has been named after him.

On my Eastern European pilgrimage, we visited a church that was modernistically described as a 'ship.' Very traditional inside, however.

Presbyterian churches, coming from a Nordic cultural heritage, are sometimes built in an “inverted Viking ship” design. Very pretty.

SHIP

A symbol of the Church

Rich in symbolic significance. Reminiscent of the Ark Noah built, used by God to carry a chosen remnant safe through the watery (this time) judgment ordeal brought upon the world.

I also thought about all the shipwrecks that St. Paul endured, yet survived.

The Catholic Church also has endured some shipwrecks, but seems to always survive stronger and invigorated.

This is a well-known altar in East Europe, but I don't remember where.
