Mormon Church Expands Hispanic Outreach- Their Fastest Growing Group of Converts

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) is one of the most active modern practitioners of missionary work, with over fifty thousand full-time missionaries worldwide, as of the end of 2009.

Commonly referred to as Mormon missionaries, most LDS Church missionaries are single young men and women in their late teens and early twenties and are assigned to a mission of the church, which is usually far from the missionary’s home. Missionaries do not receive a salary for the work they undertake, and themselves or their families financially support most. Throughout the history of the church, over one million missionaries have been sent on missions. Image

Nationwide, less than 1 percent of Hispanics are Mormon, compared to almost 70 percent Catholic, according to the Pew Research Center. Worldwide, Hispanics make up the fastest growing contingent of Mormon converts, church leaders said.

In Virginia recently a group of new Mormon missionaries arrived. In homes, speaking Spanish, the Mormons kept their message simple and repeated their invite to their Church, which includes a service translated into Spanish and carried through headphones.

“We go a lot off trial-and-error,” Mormon Elder Carter Campbell, 20, said of the language challenge. Like other elders and sisters, as the missionaries are known, Campbell learned Spanish in six weeks. “It’s hard to persuade in Spanish,” he said. “How to get to the hearts of the people?”

During lessons in homes, missionaries try to help individuals grow, not change, they said. In the case of speaking to Catholic Hispanics, the goal is reaching common ground.

The Mormon Church first deployed Spanish-speaking missionaries in the over 20 years ago, it is only this year that they plan to expand their outreach to Hispanics and further increase their fastest growing population.

— the Patroness of the Unborn — She ain't doin' too good THESE days!

45,000,000 'unborn' (in America alone) that haven't had a chance to choose Christ.

So when you make the distinction between a Jesus as seen by you or a LDS Christian, that does not have meaning to me because Jesus does not change based on our religious technicalities and misunderstandings of Him.

Imagine some Hollywood love story.

This woman hasn't met a certain man, but she hears about him all the time from her sister.

Her sister tells her all kinds of tales about this man -- most of them untrue:

"Oh, he's the literal brother of Satan himself!"
"His married dad came over and had sex with his own daughter, Mary, and she gave birth out of wedlock."
"His own dad was this special guy for so long...NOW he literally thinks he's a god to be worshiped!"
Etc.

In the love story, the woman finally meets the certain man, loathing him at first because of all the tales she's head about him. Finally, though, after getting to know him, she finds out all the other stuff was sheer fantasy -- lies!

Here, she's falling in love with a man that she almost missed out on because of the "counterfeit" presentation of what her sister made him out to be.

Her sister made him to be another certain man.

Well, all of the above quoted material are things Lds leaders have taught (paraphrased, of course) about the Mormon Jesus and the Mormon god.

The apostle Paul taught there is indeed "another" Jesus (2 Cor. 11:3-4)...and Jesus Himself taught that "false christs" -- "false messiahs" would arise (Matt. 24).

Your conclusion you stated here is like some naive person saying, "I figure I am who I am whether some creditor or retail operation knowing it's really me who made that purchase or took out that credit card in my name. So when you make the distinction between me and an identity thief as seen by others, that does not have meaning to me because I don't change based on my financial transaction 'technicalities' and marketplace 'misunderstandings' of who I am."

Oh, and as examples of what I said about Mary and the Mormon belief that their god came down & had literal sex with Mary is not just shoved aside as my opinion, I encourage anybody to click on this link and read post #116 where I addressed this 10 days ago:

The Mormon's god relationship with the Mormon Mary

Given the thread this is landing on, this should be of particular interest to Hispanic inquirers re: How Mormon leaders have presented the Mormon Mary -- and her relationship with the Mormon god!
