Gay Catholics Welcome Cardinal’s Wuerl’s Change of Heart on Gay Rights
Rainbow Sash Movement ^ | 12/8/10 | Pam Anderson

The Rainbow Sash Movement wishes to congratulate Cardinal Wuerl of the Archdiocese of Washington for siding with common sense and reason by allowing “Catholics for Equality” a newly formed Washington DC based Gay Catholic political organization, sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign Fund to host an event to be held at Georgetown University Intercultural Center Auditorium University Wednesday, December 8, 2010 8:30 - 10:00 PM .

We are glad to see that Cardinal Wuerl is not taking the same position of Archbishop Timothy Dolan recently elected president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, but allows for vigorous debate.

As a federal appeals court in California heard opening arguments in a landmark gay marriage case on Dec. 6, a shrinking coalition of religious leaders to include Archbishop Dolan released a public letter promoting marriage as "the faithful union of one man and one woman."

Archbishop Dolan joins Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals; George Wood, general superintendent of the Assemblies of God; Harry Jackson, bishop of the Fellowship of International Churches; and Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference in promoting bigotry.

We are glad to see that one of the nation’s leading Catholic Universities is promoting dialogue over dogmatism a dangerous form of religious fundamentalism in the Church. People look to this university as a leading example of American Catholicism and reasonableness.

The panelist are representative a broad array of opinion not only on Gay Rights in general, but also Gay Marriage in particular to include prochoice concerns as is represented by Andrew Sullivan’s presence on the panel. This is another example of change in the church bubbling up from the pews of our parishes. Has Wuerl actually had a "change of heart"? Did he originally refuse permission for this event and then change his mind?

From the sound of the trash talking about Dolan, it seems more likely that "Catholics for Equality" were given short shrift in New York and ended up getting Wuerl to give the thumbs up at Georgetown.

I have a strong feeling the press release is a lie. Does Cardinal Wuerl have authority to forbid speakers at Georgetown?

Is this to say that the Rainbow Sash Movement and other gay christian organizations have problems with a lot of The Bible?

I don’t think he does. He can revoke their license to operate as a Catholic institution...something that should have happend 40 years ago.

Gay Catholics...nope...can't be...one or the other...not both.

I you choose to be gay, you can't be a Catholic.

Sorry, check with God, I didn't make the rules, but I agree with them.

"I you choose to be gay, you can't be a Catholic."

Not sure I'd go that far but certainly if one chooses to engage in unrepentent gay behavior they can't be Christian (and thus Catholic). For the Christian who struggles with gay desires but successfully works hard not to act out on them I have nothing but complete respect and admiration.

Susan Gibbs, communications director for the Archdiocese of Washington, called the Rainbow Sash press release a “nice piece of fiction” and asserted that Catholics for Equality was not a legitimate Catholic organization.

“Putting the label ‘Catholic’ on a group doesn’t make it Catholic,” Gibbs told LifeSiteNews.com. “It’s not a Catholic organization. It was formed in opposition to Catholic teaching.”

But Gibbs said the D.C. archdiocese was not involved in the decision to host Catholics for Equality on the campus of Georgetown, which is under the jurisdiction of the Jesuit order.

Our parish priest said exactly what you said. You can be gay and Catholic; however, you aren’t suppose to act on the desire. No different than wanting to steal and not doing so. It is considered temptation leading to sin if followed. Just a thought.

I don’t see a lot of difference between Catholics being gay and Catholics practicing Burth Control.

I dont have a problem with gay catholics, unti they try to convince other Catholics that they are normal and the Church should recognize their Marriages.

There are many catholics who practice Birth Control, Go out at night with their girlfriend and commit adultary, even live together and still practice their religion. But they arent trying to tell the Church that their sin is ok.

Thats my problem with Homosexuals. They want their sin given the ok by the Church. The Church does not recognise homosexual marriage, nor does it recognise a marriage by two people who have been divorced. The two who have been divorced are not trying to make the Church do their will and allow them to go against the teachings of the Church.
They are not trying to make the Church recognise their marriage. Many leave the Church, but others still attend mass.

Let them debate all they want; they are wrong and will lose the debate. Then pray for them.

You wrote:

Respectfully, Brother, imagine if I said "Catholic sinners...nope...can't be."

Would you also agree with that sentiment? Can one be both a Catholic and a sinner? I hope so, Brother, or else we are all in trouble.

Yours in Christ.
