SHOULD A BAPTIST CHURCH EMBRACE PENTECOSTALISM?
PB Ministries ^ | 20-Oct-2010 | Laurence A Justice

Posted on 11/23/2010 12:14:36 AM PST by Cronos

Right now there are churches in almost every country which call themselves Baptists on the sign out front who, nevertheless, arc not Baptists, but in reality are Pentecostal churches.

....Pentecostalism is the belief that the miraculous gifts or signs which the Lord gave to the Apostles and others in the early churches have not ceased, but are still available and are still being exercised by today’s Christians. Pentecostalism claims that God still gives these miraculous gifts to men today. Lists of these gifts can be found in Mark 16:17-18 and 1 Corinthians 12:8-11.

..God’s extraordinary gifts are called this in contrast to those He ordinarily gives in all ages. They are ordinarily not given, but rather were given on extraordinary occasions. These extraordinary gifts were supernatural gifts that enabled their possessors to perform supernatural deeds. Usually when Pentecostals today speak of the gifts or the charismata, they are speaking of these extraordinary gifts, that is, healing, miracles, tongues, direct revelations from God, casting out demons. Pentecostalism teaches that these miraculous gifts, these charismata, are still available to Christians today

This is done completely by Christ, the author while you the recipient do nothing but be open and accept the Holy Spirit.

Indeed.

Thank you, dear brothers in Christ, for sharing your insights and testimony!

***The Sherill’s classic: THEY SPEAK WITH OTHER TONGUES***

I’ve read this book. He says that certain churches, that all Christians consider heretics, spoke in tongues. This should be a RED FLAG to anyone reading this book.

How can HERETICS have the Holy Spirit to speak in tongues when their doctrines came from Joseph Smith!

Sherill says the DID! (No Thread hijacking please!)

12-16 It was reported to King David that God had prospered Obed-Edom and his entire household because of the Chest of God. So David thought, “I’ll get that blessing for myself,” and went and brought up the Chest of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David, celebrating extravagantly all the way, with frequent sacrifices of choice bulls. David, ceremonially dressed in priest’s linen, danced with great abandon before God. The whole country was with him as he accompanied the Chest of God with shouts and trumpet blasts. But as the Chest of God came into the City of David, Michal, Saul’s daughter, happened to be looking out a window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing before God, her heart filled with scorn.

17-19 They brought the Chest of God and set it in the middle of the tent pavilion that David had pitched for it. Then and there David worshiped, offering burnt offerings and peace offerings. When David had completed the sacrifices of burnt and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of God-of-the-Angel-Armies and handed out to each person in the crowd, men and women alike, a loaf of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake. Then everyone went home.

20-22 David returned home to bless his family. Michal, Saul’s daughter, came out to greet him: “How wonderfully the king has distinguished himself today—exposing himself to the eyes of the servants’ maids like some burlesque street dancer!” David replied to Michal, “In God’s presence I’ll dance all I want! He chose me over your father and the rest of our family and made me prince over God’s people, over Israel. Oh yes, I’ll dance to God’s glory—more recklessly even than this. And as far as I’m concerned...I’ll gladly look like a fool...but among these maids you’re so worried about, I’ll be honored no end.”

23 Michal, Saul’s daughter, was barren the rest of her life.

***I think it’s *easyism*. the preachers are too damned lazy to preach, and the hearers too damned lazy to learn***

Now that you mention it, I have NEVER heard a Pentecostal expound or open the scriptures to understanding. I’m not saying they don’t, I’ve just never found one doing it.

Point being, yes, shutting all such things out will keep you safe from being taken in; but you might yourself get left out.

Note that I am *not* saying one should lay oneself open for just anything because someone describes it with the word spiritual.

Cheers!

Your awareness of history seems to be exceedingly inaccurate or lacking.

Pentecostal gifts and manifestations have been traced all the way back to the first centuries of the church.

Actually, THE METHODISTS and QUAKERS used to be very to somewhat Pentecostal.

Some modern writers have suggested that some of its emphasis on direct, ecstatic personal presence of the Holy Spirit bears resemblance to all forms of Pentecostalism. “It [Montanism] claimed to be a religion of the Holy Spirit and was marked by ecstatic outbursts which it regarded as the only true form of Christianity”,[4] While there may be some similarities between Montanism and modern Pentecostalism, there does not appear to be any historical link between the two, as most Pentecostals claim authenticity based on the New Testament Book of Acts (chapter 2). There is also a similarity to spiritualism.

**during all that whirling and leaping.**

During a sermon at a charismatic church in California, a girl got up and “in the spirit” started whirling (yes, whirling around) down the isle toward the podium. One of the ushers had to stop her and make her sit down.

So even some charismatic churches have certain rules about exhibitionism, even though she was “in the Spirit”.

Your argument breaks down

with Paul's mention

of tongues of men

AND OF ANGELS.

Actually these Methodists shook in fear because of their sins and Quakers quaked because they felt themselves in the presence of the Holy Spirit.

And Sherill says the followers of Joseph Smith also spoke in tongues. Did they or didn’t they!(No thread hijacking please)

That perspective ignores, denys, even trashes a number of Paul’s statements.

“I think God that I speak in tongues more than you all.”

Does NOT sound like it’s superfulous.

Similarly, his insistance that folks pray to prophecy—not just as in proclaiming but as in speaking God’s prophetic word into a situation, into a life or a meeting or to a group—does not sound like it’s a minor superfulous detail that one can glibly take or leave.

Besides, what is this—inherent implication in your question that Holy Spirit would give any true Believer anything that would be useless, minor, inconsequential, etc???? That’s outrageous, Brother!

As to folks not knowing the difference between Whoopie and Holy Spirit . . . ignoring for a moment the dance such an analogy might imply toward blaspheming against Holy Spirit . . .

WHEN HOLY SPIRIT shows up in demonstrable ways, NO ONE—CERTAINLY NOT ANY AUTHENTIC BELIEVER—HAS THE SLIGHTEST DOUBT WHO HE IS AND HIS GODLY PURPOSES AND POWER.

It is conceivable that clueless folks may mislabel counterfeits as Holy Spirit. No one I know of has ever mislabeled Holy Spirit.

He IS rather unique.

Again, one with merely an argument never has an advantage over someone with a dramatic, unforgetable EXPERIENCE OF HOLY SPIRIT.

Certainly Holy Spirit is not into selfishness at all.

Certainly He gifts for maturing, equipping, ministry etc.

Quite conceivable.

He may have been such a loser that the only way God could deal with him was to have his conscious mind and mouth out of commission.

Evidently he needed more than one surgery under anesthetic, so to speak.

I COR 13:
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

PROPHECIES have not ceased. Actually, Scripture indicates they will be increasing dramatically in the END TIMES.

Tongues have not ceased.

knowledge has not ceased—but as the Bible predicted regarding knowledge and the END TIMES—it has mushroomed.

We will be COMPLETE IN CHRIST IN ETERNITY in unfathomable ways.

There’s plenty of that in non-Pentecostal churches, too.

Doesn’t have anything to do with Holy Spirit’s manifestations or non-manifestations though I’ve observed that where the Word is not well and fervently taught, Holy Spirit tends to avoid making a very big showing.

Wise Pentecostals have noted that one MUST have THE WORD IN ITS FULLNESS AND HOLY SPIRIT IN HIS FULLNESS to have a true New Testament Church that’s balanced, alive and on fire for God doing great exploits for Jesus.

I agree.
