Gifts to Notre Dame Plunged $120M During Year of Obama’s Appearance

Contributions to the University of Notre Dame fell by over $120 million during the fiscal year in which President Barack Obama was awarded an honorary degree. Several dozen bishops criticized the university’s decision during the months preceding the May 17, 2009, commencement ceremony, and an alumni group called for the withholding of donations.

During the July 2008 - June 2009 fiscal year, gifts to the university totaled $226,689,374, including $60,133,035 in government grants. During the July 2007 - June 2008 fiscal year, in contrast, gifts totaled $347,155,514, including $62,241,121 in government grants. Thus most of the decline in contributions was in private donations rather than government funding.

The decline in donations largely coincided with the late-2000s recession, which officially began in December 2007 and ended in June 2009.

During the July 2006 - June 2007 fiscal year, gifts to the university had totaled $309,743,862, including $61,218,074 in government grants.

Hope it has a lasting effect, as people my age change their wills. They are idiots thumbing their noses at the people who support them.

I would say both.

If I had been a donor to Notre Dame my donations would have ceased immediately.

My dad was a professor there when I was a kid (1960-65)

Hesburgh ran the school in a decidedly conservative manner.

Today,I wouldn’t give them a penny.

Notre Dame's got one bad guy running the show; he needs to be prayed out of there.

Project Sycamore
Rosary for Peace

Notre Dame: the name used to mean so much.

Remember Arthur Anderson? The GREATEST name in accounting. Now, it doesn’t even exist. Different pursuit, for sure, but Notre Dame faces the same fate.

The lack of TRUST AND CREDIBILITY took out Anderson, and is going to take out Notre Dame unless things change radically.

I was there. I drove up to Notre Dame the day uhbama was to speak. I protested along with many, many others. It made me sick that Notre Dame bent its fine tradition of holding to a strong sense of core values. And I am GLAD the DONATIONS went DOWN in a big way. Good for the alumni. GOOD ON UM!

I would like to see the alumni riot. In a nice way. By cleaning house and returning it to the Catholic tradition. If Notre Dame fails to adhere to the basic tenets of the Faith, it doesn’t deserve to survive.

By the Grace of God.

And hopefully, the donations will not increase until all the people taken hostage/prisoner for standing up for the truth are released with NO charges!

Donations to education (which is mostly to colleges) in general DID decline, in 2009 - but only by about 3.8$, which reflected close to the decline in charitable donations generally (3.2%), believed to be due to the recession.

see either:

http://www.givingusareports.org/products/GivingUSA_2010_ExecSummary_Print.pdf

or see:

http://www.givingusareports.org/

to get to the link for the free download of the PDF.

But, Notre Dame’s decline in donations is OBVIOUSLY way more than most schools last year; amounting to a 41% decline in private donations;

[(total donations & grants 2007-2008 $347,155,514
minus govt grants 2007-2008 $62,241,121
equals private donations 2007-2008 $284,914,393);

(total donations and grants 2008-2009 $226,689,374
minus govt grants 2008-2009 $60,133,035
equals private donations 2008-2009 $166,556,339);

(private donations 2007-2008 $284,914,393
minus private donations 2008-2009 $166,556,339
equals loss for 2008-2009 $118,358,054);

and (loss for 2008-2009 $118,358,054
divided by private donations 2007-2008 $284,914,393
equals 0.415416 - or 41%)]

OBVIOUSLY a large number of donations Notre Dame would normally get did not come in and the recession cannot explain the level of the decline. Only the donors know how much Obama was a factor. Personally, from my perspective, I believe it would be good if Notre Dame was given to believe their love affair with Obama WAS a major factor.

As long as this University is a pretend Catholic University or a CINO University, maybe they should consider changing the name to:

Knute Rockne University

Football is what this University is known for, so why not name the University after one of the school's most celebrated players and coach (Knute Rockne played for Notre Dame, then coached for Notre Dame)...

Pray for the Notre Dame 88.

Also pray for the priests at Notre Dame.

Apparently, by the news reports from Saint Edwards in Austin, Texas, the trouble Notre Dame University has experience has made Saint Edwards leery of such events.

Obama tried this past summer to visit the campus, which was declined.

Saint Edwards is also a college established by the order CSC -- The Holy Cross order.

The same fate has befallen my alma mater, Boston College. It is a mere shadow of what it was 35 years ago.

I am so sorry to hear that. The BC vs ND game was special, wasn’t it? And not just for football.

Anyone else see a problem with an institution that receives $226 million in gifts also getting $60 million in government money? To start to purge the marxists from America we have to get rid of the mechanisms they have put in place to fund themselves. That means eliminate huge numbers of federal employees and eliminate government grants.

Both schools do well in the academic sense

But in the moral sense?

BC and ND have apparently gone to the dogs.

I'll betcha the ND administration blames the drop-off of dollars on the economy and defends the Obama visit.
