Prayer Request for FReeper's Daughter (wishes to remain anonymous)
08-29-10 | Freepmail to Salvation

Posted on 08/29/2010 5:58:35 PM PDT by Salvation

I received this FReepmail Request:

Dear Salvation,

Could you please start an anonymous prayer thread for my daughter, Mary. She took an overdose of Tylenol from which she has survived, but she and the rest of our family need prayers. She is still on the psych ward - was supposed to be discharged this weekend but it didn’t happen. Her Fall Semester begins tomorrow - We think it’s very important for her to get back in the saddle - she is a Dean’s List student getting ready to start her last semester.

Thank you,

(Redacted)

Prayers for Mary that she may heal and that she finds peace through Jesus. Prayers for her parents at this time.

Happy to pray for her.

What do I know, but maybe she should take a semester off. It seems she is under a lot of pressure.

Prayers up for Mary and for all her loved ones. Please listen to the wisdom of these FReepers. Minimizing this attempt might make another attempt likely. She sounds fragile at this point. Best wishes.

Thank you. I can only wonder what is going on in the minds of her family. I’m sure there is denial, as it was with my parents. Most of all, is the feeling of “what went wrong”, I’m sure.

I’m the parent of a young teen now and I certainly watch for signs of depression in him. I truly believe it’s genetic. That’s why I’ve tried to impress upon him that the love of God can conquer any problem no matter how big, or small.

Under no circumstances am I supporting those who have condemned her family.

They are having a pseudo-grieving period right now. We don’t deal with ACTUAL death that well, when it’s unexpected...how are we supposed to feel when a loved one makes a serious attempt?

How are you supposed to feel when it’s your child. You can’t judge...many of you would probably say, “I want you to get back on the horse that threw you...”

It seems like wise counsel.

“Let’s pretend this never happened.”

But it did. You don’t have Hollywood PR to cover it up and you shouldn’t shove your child back out under the pressure. You don’t have to keep up with the Jones’...their kids have problems, too.

You misunderstand me, I was not speaking poorly of her family, but like you said, she needs more than just a push to *get back in the saddle*...I have had clinical depression and the one thing that is important to remember that my doctor told me was :You didn't get into this situation overnight and it will not go away overnight" I think that is a message to her and her parents....I think you were giving good common sense counsel.

There are many different kinds of antidepressants and hopefully the right one for her will be found quickly...

Brain chemistry can get screwed up just like the chemistry in any other body organ can be messed up...like diabetes, or malfunctioning thyroid...

Too many people assign shame to a mental (and sometimes brain chemistry) problem.... for some long term stress can trigger the depression. GG

I certainly will pray for Mary, and for your whole family, since this sort of thing is a shock and terrifying for everyone. May all of you be healed in the ways you need to be.

I would like to respectfully add my voice to those who point out that Mary may not be quite ready to go back to school at this time (even if she thinks she wants to). I myself lost a semester of grad school to a sudden illness. At the time I thought, “Oh, no, I won’t graduate with everyone else!” and thought it was terrible. But I spent that semester at home reconnecting with my family, hanging out with my supportive friends, and most important, HEALING. Mary may need a semester off too. Please consider this option carefully, especially if her doctors think it’s a good idea.

May God be a comfort to Mary and to all who are going through such trauma that they feel HE has abandoned them.

This happens every day to some poor soul and seems to be very prevalent in my family right, now.

Grant them Peace. Mend their Hearts. Comfort their souls and clear their minds.

This seems to happen to the most strong minds and the best and brightest ... perhaps Satan is bringing his evil confusion to them.

Hang in there. Mary has wonderful parents in you—parents who love the Lord. I add my humble prayers with the hundreds of Freepers who are praying for your precious daughter.
God bless.

You sound like a wise and learned person. Thanks once again. It sounds as though you are doing very well with your son.

I'll be happy to add Mary, and her family, to our Parish Prayer list. But I would concur with WJ, and J4 about letting Mary take a Semester off school. Sometimes the pressure can get to be too much, and she might have been dreading what she knew was going to be another semester of the same.

If she can take a class at a local college, that can transfer to her regular school, while remaining at home, in a safe and loving environment, she can keep up with some of the work.

Our daughter had a melt-down or two at college, before she, and we, realized that she was having some brain-chemistry issues. Since she's seen a physician and counselor, she's doing MUCH better; "Better living through Chemistry"! She's taking a semester off of her out of town college, but that was mainly her choice. Since one of the couple of classes she needs to graduate is ONLY offered in the Spring, she decided she didn't want to take on the cost of a Fall Semester that wouldn't gain her much for her Major. She's taking a Math class at a local college that she can transfer to her college (she already checked, and it's OK with them), that will complete her Math Minor, so it's not a wasted semester at all. She also got a job, which she's enjoying, and the schedule of which she can work around that one class.

I hope Mary gets the help, for which, by her actions, she's clearly asking.

I lift this child up to you, Father in Heaven, that you would heal her and show her the right way and give her hope. She is made in your image and loved beyond all belief. Let her feel that love. I pray, too, for all who love her. In Jesus’ name, I pray this.

(our society does much to put too much pressure on our kids)

Your words show concern for Mary. I thought the same thing. I think this pressure-cooker of a society we live in is killing all of us... “Be still and know...” says our Lord.

More from the FReeper parent:

We are not pressuring Mary in any way - she does want to get back to school. She will be in counseling through the school and we her parents will be part of that process.

She is certainly in my prayers, and my heart goes out to her and your family.

Usually I don't post much or interject anything, try to pray for all these requests, but I long ago did it on something else. It takes some time to recover; some of the emotional effects as well as possible physical effects can be longlasting. And I'm sorry but can't read all the responses right now.

Without knowing the whole situation, something has triggered this, and it needs to be gotten to the bottom of before she goes back to school imo.

May God grant your whole family the wisdom to tread very cautiously and deal with this situation in her long-term best interests.

My heart truly goes out to your family.
