“Hail Ceaser?”

In Latin ‘Ave, Caesar’. ‘Ave’ was the word all Romans used when formally addressing another Roman, in a letter, for example. When Cicero started a letter to his slave scribe Tiro with ‘Ave Tiro’, I doubt he was worshiping him.

Hail, used as an interjection, comes from the Old Norse heill, meaning health. It is a salutation, one that has come to have a sense of acclamation to it (eg. hail to the chief).

To be honest, I've been screening several translations. Other than the King James, the passage from Luke is translated "greetings."

So, when a Catholic prays, "Hail Mary" they're actually saying "Hi, Mary."

Additionally, Christians were put to death for failing to say, "Hi Ceaser!"

I guess I can accept that, but would someone please explain how the Angel Gabriel began speaking Old Norse!

That's a good one!

And, just to keep things real here, I should quote what is too easily overlooked, and I am as guilty as, or guiltier than, anybody, in not living up to the standard set:

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

I think it sad that these tit for tat volleys continue over and over.

Protestants claim Catholics are in error, Catholics feel the protestants are not even part of Christ's body.

We are all the body of Christ if we confess with our mouths and our lives that Jesus is indeed the messiah.

We ALL make mistakes and live in a broken world.

Even as the church was being established, MEN began putting their own spin on the salvation message. What's the difference in 2010?

Besides, look at all the scandals....in both Protestant and Catholic churches. satan is alive and well, attempting to tear down the church from within.

Unity in the body of Christ comes through the belief in the essentials of the faith. Christ Jesus is the sacrificial lamb of God, given in love from the Father Almighty.

We all believe that...don't we? God knows our imperfections, our propensity to sin.

Do we not run back to HIM when we fall into sin?

I guess I'm just sayin....Can't we all just get along. lol.

Think about those who are searching for salvation. Are we not giving off a message of disunity through our own prideful tendencies?

Who cares if others pray to Mary, why must those who pray to or through Mary keep insisting that others are in error if they fail to do so?

Unity through the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit.

‘Catholics feel the protestants are not even part of Christ’s body’

Not true, anyone who has a Christian Baptism and accepts the Nicene Creed is part of the Church, although Protestants are in some greater or lesser error and the Orthodox are in schism.

No, I objected to your profanity on this thread and let’s not kid each other you know that was my objection.

As for the content, it got zapped so I can’t say what about might have been offensive.

Rhetoric, Catholic? Couldn’t care less. I’m not Catholic and I could care less about someone putting down their beliefs or mine. It’s part of the sharing of thoughts and ideas.

As for Asinine, that was not the word you used and that also would not be offensive.

I only called to the Mod for the offense of one word. Which on any other thread is not offensive and I use the same word.

You chose the wrong venue, my opinion, and since you are going to great length push something on me that doesn’t exist except for your creativity, I would suspect you feel very comfortable using that word or that type of language at church.

You must be a real hoot, standing all by yourself, at pot lucks.

As for the mod and his motivation they would certainly give you a reason. I have been had remarks removed and asked “What gives?”.

Again, it doesn’t seem you have a conscience and couldn’t care less. Maybe you are the type to spit in the baptismal.

As for childish, you went at great length in your response to not even care about your behavior.

Seems selfish and self serving and a total lack of introspect.

But, hey, that’s just you and you don’t care.

Incorrect —> Protestant groups like the Traditional Anglicans and Lutherans are clearly part of Christ’s body. Any group that holds true to the orthodox tenets of the Trinitarian faith as described in the Nicene Creed and which has a valid baptism in the name of the Father,Son and Holy Spirit, is an estranged part of The Body.

Anybody know where the idea that the Saints aren’t in Heaven but are sleeping came from originally?

Is this something that came with the “Left Behind” rapture book series?

Rachel: Do you remember where you first heard it or read it?

Protestants seem to believe God hijacked Mary’s body. That is, of course, consistent with their belief in active predestination. In the Protestant model, there is no free will - God possesses humans as an external agent and turns them into zombies. So much for the virtues of obedience and love - they can’t exist in the Protestant model.
That of course makes the Scriptural references to Christ’s obedience to His Father a lie.

Such are the logical and necessary conclusions of believing Mary is not a cooperator in God’s redemptive plan.

As for the denial of oral tradition, it is also a rejection of the New Testament, which originated in oral tradition. It makes a mockery of St. John the Evangelist’s assertion that most of what Christ said and did is not written, in turn suggesting that those other acts and words are not important, in spite of their originating in God’s Word.

Without the Catholic Church and it’s oral tradition, there would be no New Testament (and no Christianity)- unless one believes that God presented the bible directly to Luther in the form of the KJV and started his Church thence.

Some key lines from Scripture (from the KJV) that we Catholics take literaly:

On Mary the Mother of God:
Luke 1:41-43: “And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

42And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

43And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”

On Catholic Oral Tradition:
John 21: 25 “And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.”

On the virtue of obedience (we are not zombies), first of Christ’s obedience to the Father:
John 12: 49 “For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.”

Luke 22: 42 “Saying, Father, if you be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done.”

Then on Mary’s obedience and her cooperation in God’s redemptive plan.:
Luke 1:38 “And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.”

On Mary’s role in dispensing God’s grace:
Luke 1: 44-45 “For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

On Mary’s Faith, Obedience, and her subsequent blessedness:
Luke 11: 27-28 “ And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.

But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.”

Luke 1: 45 (Elizabeth to Mary:) “And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.”

That is what you think of the United States before Catholics started immigrating to it and making it liberal, that the Americans were just zombie Protestants with out free will, that just happened to create the freest nation and the freest people to ever exist?

If you want zombies then look at the Catholic nations of Mexico and points south.

Who thinks themselves or their spouses worthy to have the Holy Spirit overshadow them and give birth to the Son of God? Who thinks themselves worthy to be the parent of the Son of God?

It was THROUGH Mary that Christ was introduced to the world. One can settle on the 3 years that the apostles were with him or one can allow the depth of love his Mother shows us through the 33 yrs she shared with Jesus and every day since. Do you think Mary would have asked and done the silly things/questions that the apostles did? Deny him 3 times, go into hiding at his crucifixion, etc.?

It’s not by accident that the holiest of Saints throughout the ages have had a deep devotion to Our sweet Mother. It’s not by accident that the graces that are showered out when we allow Mary to guide us to her Son through her eyes and heart are unquestionably blessed. God’s ways are not our ways.

Here’s a bold idea...pray on it and see where the Holy Spirit leads you.

God Bless
