Litany of Humility

Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become
as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

Closing Prayer

Dominicus Gabriel Mariae

O most gracious Lord Jesus:
To redeem an undeserving humanity
You gave up everything you had.

In your mercy, grant us the grace
of despising all things but you
and your love

That we may know the joy
you brought to us
through your dolorous Passion
and Death,

Who live and reign in might and bliss
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
One God, in everlasting glory.

“The Ol’ Mizris pointed out that somebody said in her little devotional thingie that Martha’s error was not in the “much serving” but in her losing sight of the object and objective of that service, which was love.”

I think it was her losing sight of the object of JESUS Himself. The more she learned to be still and LISTEN, the more full of Love she became. This is often the most difficult aspect of prayer to learn and put into practice. At least it has been that way for me. But, it is also the most rewarding and will make our faith grow tremendously. We can pray the Liturgy of the Hours, recite all of our devotional prayers...but we also HAVE to learn to LISTEN to Him speak to us personally.

Amen to the prayer! ;-)

So Mr. Mad Dawg, in the course of healing the tear (which, so far, has been pretty straightforward stuff), I saw a brief TV art show where the artist had gone to some older drawings in museums and copied over the pictures of demons and "Death".

"Death" in many cases has a black cape that flows upward and over, on an angle, and is illdefined.

Seemed pretty obvious all the artists saw the same thing ~ and I'll be doggone that cape is what happens when you have a GIANT Retinal Tear ~ on one side of the eye or another.

That's what those artists ~ some of them truly great artists, saw out the side of their field of vision ALL THE TIME.

Before the age of laser surgery there were few options. Your vision just got worse and worse and the black capes closed in and that was the end. St. Paul probably saw something like this ~ I don't know but will RE READ everything he wrote or what his contemporaries said about him.

Believe it or not I can now see both of my hands on the eyboard with the damaged eye. Can't see the letters, but I touch type. What I need is to know where the starting point is ~ but lest other happenstances happen I will prepare myself by exercising the "for the blind" software so I can join these conversations with just my ears if not my vision.

Odds are very good that this is NOT the end of the retinal tears ~

I will keep checking in these eternal novenas ~ remember, the former RCs at my church still conduct them ~ for all the obvious reasons.

I have a tendency to be a Martha, a busy worrier. I see this passage in two ways:

First: Christ is saying that works are important but faith is THE most important attribute. Works should follow.

Second: Christ values loving adoration. We should all strive to be like Mary, sit quietly, and listen for His voice. We can’t hear Him when we are bustling about taking care of “business” or even when we’re serving others. We must be still and know that He IS. Busy-ness does not equal love. Choosing to have a real and personal relationship with God is the “better part.”

My priest has also kindly reminded me that worrying is a sign of a lack of faith. This thread has reminded me that is is also a sign of a lack of humility— all my worrying doesn’t change a thing. I’m not that powerful!

What an amazing observation. This may sound glib and may BE intrusive, in which case please tell me to take a hike. But I just got back from a meeting MOSTLY of young enthusiastic on fire for Jesus people, in their mid to late 20's for the most part. And the attractive, intelligent young couple addressing us was just brimming with confidence and eagerness. And I felt lifted up, yes, but I also felt OLD. Here they all are, if they have kids they're healthy. The prospects they have are good, in terms of ministry and careers. Not a retinal tear or a sick child in the whole gang. And while I prayed, "Lord, shield the joyous," I also thought how God DOES stretch us and challenge us and, it seems, as life goes on, throw more and more at us to the point where we have to say something like,"This is very hard, maybe harder than I can bear. But I still put myself in God's hands ... though if He eased it up a little, I couldn't complain." So I'd like to learn your thoughts about God in the midst of this, ah, adventure of yours.

In any event, keep us posted, and we will lift you up in prayer.

For me, the big deal is that John says something like Martha was 'troubled with much serving', and IHS says to her, "You are anxious about many things."

I LIKE that Martha went out and almost rebuked IHS when He came after Lazarus's death. That sounds like a useful application of her energy. Maybe she learned from IHS's word when He was visiting them.

Man has a finite existence. Our bodies age and wear out. In the end all men die.

Our minds, on the other hand, have their quantum qualities and along with the elements of heart, soul, spirit and 5 or 6 others some Orthodox Jews have deduced, are essentially eternal, or in some manner dramatically different than our physical bodies.

Christian theology is that we have but one time to die ~ other theologies suggest we return to this plane repeatedly Christ Himself said he'd always been here and that would be the case going forward as well ~ so, to a degree, He doesn't return since He never left. On the other hand, we are promised new bodies in the Resurrection at the End of Days.

I know they'll be better so in the meantime I'll deal with the one I have because, frankly, it's the only one I have.

Audie Murphy, a man who knew an awful lot about the question, said that you can be brave by keeping one step ahead of fear. That's all I'm doing. You guys are helping me do exactly that.

Let me tell you, about 40 years ago I stepped into a fiery inferno and pulled a woman out. Her blue night dress melted all over my arm and my hand. That was a bit easier than this ~ tonight I go to bed for the 8th time since surgery with a guard taped over my eye to keep the covers from irritating my eye. Many folks know about those guards. I will awaken in exactly 6 hours and pull it off ~ my first order of business upon waking. Next, dial up FR and see what the news is. Next, breakfast and a shower, next 12 to 18 hours of leaning over looking straight down at the floor.

Simple items ~ a veritable prison.

BTW, tomorrow I visit the doctor and he'll give me a better idea of how long this will go on. At present he's only concerned with the size of the field of vision. A patient man.

Ah.

You know about “stepping into it.”

God is great. In Him we are sometimes allowed to do great things.

Most of those great things are not understood in the world.

I look forward, with tears, to the day God lets me ‘step into’ death, because that is when I will take a big step into Him, who is all I ever wanted.

Not to worry, my friend. I never take anything on the forum personally...well rarely...but you have always been so kind towards me that even if I thought you were mocking, I would know you really weren’t. Kai?

And ice cream is really good for hot flashes. :o)

I'm praying for your complete healing. Our gift of sight is such a precious thing and only when we risk losing it do we really appreciate it the most.

I had Lasix correction about five years ago and when they do it - one eye at a time - when the cornea is cut and peeled away (yuk - I know) all you “see” is darkest blackness with thousands of teeny “stars”. It was weird and scary and I got a little taste of what blindness may be like. Thank the Lord it all went well and at 57 years old I see 20/20 (just need 1.75 reading glasses for close up stuff).

Again, I pray you have an amazing recovery of your sight and can once again see all that our Heavenly Father has blessed us with!

So do you fill the bathtub with Haagen-Daz and jump into it or just rub it all over you?

Of course, ice cream -- at least the good stuff -- would exacerbate the condition for which I have to take all these poisons, uh medications.

Darn.

;-)

Beloved.

It is the day of mercy, Friday, the day when death was upended, when the end was turned into a beginning. When the tragedy of the Fall was “perfected” (as one might paradoxically say) in the obscenity of the cross — but so perfected, so BEYOND perfection, that sadistic cruelty opened a door in the Universe into which mercy and love could flood.

The ole Niacin Flush.

Take tylenol or Ibuprofen about 1 hr before the dose.

Time the dose for when you intend to shower anyway.

Take a tepid one until it passes and you will feel much more better.

As you get accustomed to the flush it will stop happening.

Saturday

Rest

Humility may FEEL like work, but it’s Vanity and Pride which suck all our energy from us IMHO.

I may be out of communication until as late as Wednesday.

Keep praying, please.

Praying always (and, for me, almost coherently since the temperature fell back to the 70s!) . . .

Are you going to entrust your ping list to someone to keep things going while you're unavailable?

There is also a “flush-free” niacin my husband takes. But he says you still have to get used to it. He slipped a niacin pill in with other vitamins he gave me one time and I didn’t know what was happening. I had a terrible reaction to it and told him I would “divorce” him if he ever did it again! I felt like I was being stung by bees all over my body. My hands and feet swelled and were beet red. I was dizzy and sweaty. Awful, awful feeling. I think I can do without this “vitamin” or else get it in some other format.

Niacin flush is not a fun thing.

Kinda like being boiled.
