Litany of Humility

Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become
as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

Closing Prayer

Dominicus Gabriel Mariae

O most gracious Lord Jesus:
To redeem an undeserving humanity
You gave up everything you had.

In your mercy, grant us the grace
of despising all things but you
and your love

That we may know the joy
you brought to us
through your dolorous Passion
and Death,

Who live and reign in might and bliss
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
One God, in everlasting glory.

What a burden this vanity is!

That reminds me of "The Great Divorce."

I don’t even want to think about humility on the RF.

I find that the hardest times we find to be humble in are the best way the Lord has for teaching us humility. Why waste time on the easy places? Besides, it is all about HIM living through us and he is glorified when we see that something we think is impossible for us to do actually IS possible through him. What a wonderful and life-changing lesson it is when we finally learn it. Just what the doctor ordered! :o)

And just for the record, I don't consider myself “there” yet. I'm running the race set before me like everyone else. I sometimes get tired and sit out for awhile, I sometimes run fast and sometimes slow, and occasionally, I even go backwards, but I stay in the race because it is my new nature that wears the numbered shirt, she has no other place to be!

It's a standard joke in my parish: It's dangerous to pray for virtues: God will grant your prayer.

And how does He grant our prayers for patience? By giving us lots of opportunities to practice it.

And YES! He has given us a new 'nature', a new self, which is oriented toward Him and sustained by Him. So, as I may have said earlier, if we stumble forward, at least we're stumbling in the right direction.

Thanks for this, boatbums.

Thank YOU!

Glad you slept a bit better.

If you have a home b/p cuff.. Check your pressure when you have dizziness.

It can be an indication of low b/p...meaning the med overshot the mark.

Hey there’s a thread about anti-Catholicism sayings that needs prayer today!

I think many of us forget that God really is on our side, and that everything he has ever done was done with the intention of getting YOU into the perfect joy which only He can supply.

So, especially when we fell like we’re getting it all wrong, we must remember, we must tell ourselves (and this is when Faith is, as well as a gift, clearly a virtue, because we must DO it) that He is getting it all right.

I am distressed because of the effects, for example, of these meds. But I am a fool to wallow in this distress, because a mere array of side effect will not interfere with God’s saving will.

So, my alleged point is, you may think you have fallen in the wrong direction. But God meant it for good.

So there.

I REALLY do not mean this to be a Catholic thread. I am happy to pray that those injured for Christ rejoice, and those who injure them come to better minds. WE all should pray that.

But here, of all places, let us put down for a minute our divisions. Please. WE can see all over the place that there are non-Catholic Christians who have much to offer us, and maybe they can see that we have much to offer them. Certainly the response to this thread had been encouraging.

So let’s not talk of the wars here, please.

If I am insulted, Lord, let me not deserve it.
If I deserve it, let me know my deserts, and do You use them for my improvement.
If I do not deserve it, let me glorify Christ in my discomfort.
And let me never cease loving You and your children, ALL of them.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Happy Day, bubbas and sissies!

The Lord has called us to pray for the gift of humility. To pray for humility is to pray to have the mind of Jesus, who gave away everything to bring God’s love to us.

In the Spirit He sent to us, may the Love which is God Himself enfold and strengthen us, making us strong enough to toss away the vanities of the old and dying self and then unencumbered, proclaim Love in word and life.

Yes. I’m very fond of the baby, really. I just don’t enjoy hearing him yodeling at 2 a.m.

He slept much better before I stopped drinking.

Because I was the stay-at-home daddy, I got to handle the yodeling. I would wake up, change the baby, plug her in, wait in semi-coma for her to be done, change her again, but her back to bed, and then when the yodelling commenced it was I who battled demons and wondered if a night outside in the snow might calm her down a little.

And I still love her a LOT.

This baby doesn’t throw up nearly as often as some of the others, so that’s a plus. He’s 13 months old, and he slept at night for a while. Now I guess he’s growing really fast so he’s starving all the time, like some of the brothers.
