The secrets surrounding the Holy Shroud
Rome Reports ^ | April 3, 2010

Posted on 04/03/2010 10:13:43 AM PDT by NYer

April 3, 2010. Turin will play host to the Holy Shroud between April 10th and May 23rd. More than one million people have made reservations to visit. More than 4 thousand volunteers are helping with artistic exhibitions, movies and informative panels.

The origin and the authenticity of the Holy Shroud are still big mysteries. Mysteries that scientists, physicist, biologists and archaeologists have still not been able to solve.

Andrea Tornielli
Author, ‘Sindone, inchiesta sul mistero’

“Science will continue to study the Holy Shroud because there’s new technology like high-definition photography that can perhaps help reveal new information.”

Emanuela Marinelli
Holy Shroud Expert

“If the DNA of the blood on the Holy Shroud is the same as the one found on the cloth in Oviedo, that would be a big revelation. That’s why I believe we need to keep investigating.”

But, there are some facts that point to the authenticity of the Holy Shroud. For example, this type of cloth was used by wealthy people because their bodies were laid to rest in mass graves. According to the Gospel, Joseph of Arimathea, a rich man, is the person who gave Jesus’ body a proper burial.

Traces of aloe, myrrh and 70 types of pollen have also been found on the linen. Three-quarters of these plants grow exclusively in the Middle East near Jerusalem.

According to the drops of blood, the contact between the body and the cloth lasted for 36 hours, the amount of time according to the Gospel between Jesus’ death and resurrection.

That’s why perhaps the most significant aspect of the linen is that it helps explains Jesus’ crucifixion.

Andrea Tornielli
Author, ‘Sindone, inchiesta sul mistero’

“The large amount of bilirubin in blood indicates that he had a violent death, that he sweated blood just as it’s described in the Gospels, and that his suffering is indescribable.”

Emanuela Marinelli
Holy Shroud Expert

“According to the Holy Shroud, he suffered 120  lashes with the call flagrum, which had three strings, and each one had two pieces of sharpened bone, which tore skin. Therefore, every blow would cause six injuries. 120 lashes equals 720 wounds.”

Jesus had a wooden plank attached from his hand to his foot, as he walked to the place he was crucified.  The remains of dirt found on the cloth near his nose and his knees would be confirm that he fell to the ground several times.

According to scientists it’s very likely he died from a heart attack. That’s why some say he shouted on the cross before he died and water and blood flowed out after a soldier pierced his side with a spear. Details supported by evidence taken from the Shroud.

Authentic or not, the shroud helps to better understand the last moments of Jesus' life and that’s why Pope Benedict XVI will visit the shroud May 2nd.

More and more evidence points to the conclusion that it is the shroud in which Jesus was buried.

If nothing else, look at the head wounds.

Now compare it with the Sudarium (head cloth) in Oviedo Spain.

The man was wounded before death with something that made his scalp bleed and produced wounds on his neck, shoulders and upper part of the back.

The blood (stain symmetry, type and other indicators) on the Sudarium matches the blood on the Shroud.

AND

The Sudarium contains pollen grains of Gundelia tournefortii, identical to that found of the Shroud that grows only east of the Mediterranean Sea as far north as Lebanon and as far south as Jerusalem.

We know the head wounds of Jesus were caused by the crown of thorns. How many crucified men were similarly crowned?

"But it is in the plural form every time. Not a single cloth but multiple cloths." Yes, two is plural. One 'shrouding' the body, and at least one spiral-wrapped. And the cloth covering the head (face covering of a corpse) is σουδάριον soudarion soo-dar'-ee-on Of Latin origin; a sudarium (sweat cloth), that is, towel (for wiping the perspiration from the face, or binding the face of a corpse): - handerchief, napkin.

Is this ‘face cloth’ also referred to as “Veronica’s Veil?”

Is this ‘face cloth’ also referred to as “Veronica’s Veil?”

No! This is the head cloth of Christ.

How the sudarium was wrapped around the head

3: Coincidence with the Shroud

The sudarium alone has revealed sufficient information to suggest that it was in contact with the face of Jesus after the crucifixion. However, the really fascinating evidence comes to light when this cloth is compared to the Shroud of Turin.

The first and most obvious coincidence is that the blood on both cloths belongs to the same group, namely AB.

The length of the nose through which the pleural oedema fluid came onto the sudarium has been calculated at eight centimetres, just over three inches. This is exactly the same length as the nose on the image of the Shroud.

If the face of the image on the Shroud is placed over the stains on the sudarium, perhaps the most obvious coincidence is the exact fit of the stains with the beard on the face. As the sudarium was used to clean the man's face, it appears that it was simply placed on the face to absorb all the blood, but not used in any kind of wiping movement.

A small stain is also visible proceeding from the right hand side of the man's mouth. This stain is hardly visible on the Shroud, but Dr. John Jackson, using the VP-8 and photo enhancements has confirmed its presence.

The thorn wounds on the nape of the neck also coincide perfectly with the bloodstains on the Shroud.

I would not consider the Bible, the Koran, The Constitution, the Dead Sea Scrolls artifacts in the same way we might consider the Shroud an artifact. Certainly modern day things such as Disney, Literature, even the dome of the Cisten Chapel, are not ‘artifacts’ in the same sense. I don’t know that I would even call the Shroud an artifact, if you get right down to it. Of the six dictionary definitions of ‘artifact’, this one might come closest to applying to the Shroud...

“a handmade object, as a tool, or the remains of one, as a shard of pottery, characteristic of an earlier time or cultural stage, esp. such an object found at an archaeological excavation.”

The science doesn’t say the image is in multiple cloths, only in the Shroud. The suderium (face cloth) does not have the image, but it does have matching blood stains with respect to blood type (AB) and shape, and it contains other evidence such as pollen that indicates it was in Jerusalem. From a forensics point of view, the Shroud is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of being the burial cloth (or one of them) of Christ.

Act 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

So God has type AB blood, eh??? Good to know in case He ever needs a transfusion...

How do you guys explain the fact that there is no room on the shroud for the top of Jesus' head??? That space would have to be there if the shroud covered his body in the front, then wrapped over the top of his head and then covered the back of his body like you guys claim...

The blood in the Shroud and the suderium is type AB, and given all the other evidence, this blood is very likely the blood of Christ. So yes, God in human form, had type AB blood.

The image in the shroud shows the scars made by the crown of thorns so I don’t know why you would say the Shroud does not contain the top of Jesus’s head.

You guys? It is not us (Freeper Shroud fans) who are making these claims, it is the scientists that have studied the Shroud, we are just taking in their findings to our amazement and are unable to refute them, as is anyone else.

The Shroud of Turin is authentic, get used to it.

Just it has been widely known that most relics were at best pious frauds.

And the image is made of red ocre and vermillion... vermillion as a pigment was a fairly new at the time that we have actual records of the Fraud of Turin.

The argument that the Shroud of Turin is a painting was throughly debunked by several scientists who have studied the Shroud, as explained in the video “The Fabric of Time.” There is no evidence that the image was been created by paint pigments of any sort. In fact the ongoing speculation now is that it was imprinted by some form of radiation. Go back and read through my posts on this thread for a point by point debunking, I don’t want to write it all over again. More importantly though, watch the video “The Fabric of Time” for the latest on all the scientific evidence regarding the Shroud of Turin and then see if your case still holds up.

By far, the weight of the evidence to date is that the Shroud of Turin is authentic.

Probably all those who led a rebellion of one sort or another. This was Judea, which had a religious rebellion about once every two weeks.

It is not evidence if a forgery matches its cover story.

I’m torn between believing this is real, or that Da Vinci created it.

Ignore Picknett and Prince... their book is a fantasy. The shroud was put on display in Lirey, France, 101 years before Leonardo was born.
