Nuts and Bolts - By Tim Staples: Mary Worshippers Need Not Apply

The Scenario:

Ever have one of those days when you’re feeling full of energy and vigor? I mean, you’re feeling just obnoxiously happy? Well, this is one of those days.

Driving home from work, you switch on the radio to see what’s happening, and you tune in to a local Protestant radio station just in time to hear a preacher speaking against various Catholic doctrines concerning Mary. The show is called Pastor Bob’s Bible Hour. Pastor Bob proclaims: “Jesus knew Catholics would come along and begin to worship His mother and call her perpetual virgin and absurd things like that. But the Bible says: ‘Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And are not His brethren James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all of His sisters with us?’ (Matt. 13:55-56a). And isn’t it sad, my brothers and sisters?”

Pastor Bob goes on to say: “Jesus dealt with these Mary worshippers in His day. In Luke 11:27-28, the Bible says, ‘A woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts that You sucked!” But He said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”’”

On a normal day you would probably just listen, take a few mental notes and drive on. But not this time. You’re feeling a little bit too saucy. You take the first exit you see and head for a phone. This is just one more reason why you need to buy that cell phone you’ve been talking about getting.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful story. I can completely connect with you re: Stations of the Cross. I remember Lent as a child and weeping over what was done to our Lord and how his Mother must have felt. I had to grow much older before I completely understood why Christ had to suffer and die for our sins.

"John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting."

“The Blessed Mother is simply the Mother of our Savior. The Gold Sandard role model of a Christian woman.”

Mary was just another sin filled and fallen human. The gold standard role model of a Christian woman should be Christ Himself. Christ alone.

Why use a fallen person filled with sin who is no different than you are as your role model when you can have a Perfect Role Model instead?

Mary obeyed God and was blessed by Him. This is good for anyone to do. But if you want to know what to obey and how to obey, Christ is your role model. Believe Him. Trust Him. Obey Him. Follow Him. Not Mary, who is no different than you or I or anyone else.

If Mary ever appears as some kind of ‘ghost’ or something to you or some church authority you follow, make sure to ask “her” if Christ came in the flesh. If any other Gospel is preached, don’t believe it.

***Mary did not have an “innocent nature” because she was not created by God***

This statement right here is incorrect. EVERYONE is created by God! And we are not created in the image of Adam, we are created in the image of God! That is basic Christian belief. If God wanted to preserve Mary from sinning, make her spotless through the Sacrifice of Christ on the Cross, or whatever way He wanted to make sure that she was pure, who are we to argue? She was to be His mother - He could make her any way He wanted to! And when she was born, she had never seen sin or death, so your argument is not logical. And Jesus certainly saw the effects of sin and death, and yet He did not sin. (Yesterday’s Gospel reading was on His temptation by the devil in the wilderness.) Adam and Eve were innocent until they, by their own choice, disobeyed God. Why is it so hard to believe that there could be one person who loved God so much, that she never wanted to disobey God? Who wanted to please Him in everything? Sin is separation from God, and I don’t think it is far-fetched to believe that someone could love God so much that she never wanted to be separated from Him or displease Him.

Here is a poem that expresses perfectly the Catholic view of Mary and her role in salvation history:

Mary the Dawn, Christ the Perfect Day;
Mary the Gate, Christ the Heav’nly Way!
Mary the Root, Christ the Mystic Vine;
Mary the Grape, Christ the Sacred Wine!
Mary the Wheat, Christ the Living Bread;
Mary the Stem, Christ the Rose Blood-red!
Mary the Font, Christ the Cleansing Flood;
Mary the Chalice, Christ the Saving Blood!
Mary the Temple, Christ the Temple’s Lord;
Mary the Shrine, Christ the God adored!
Mary the Beacon, Christ the Haven’s Rest;
Mary the Mirror, Christ the Vision Blest!
Mary the Mother, Christ the Mother’s Son.
By all things blest while endless ages run.

I know and it is so sad that someone took time to praise Mary that could have been given to Christ, my Savior and my King. God desires all the glory..not just some of it

All things are to be for His glory.

One can deceive oneself and say honoring Mary(or the saints) is praising God, but that is pure self deception

What? Taking time to praise Mary but not Christ? How do you see that in what I posted? The whole poem is in praise of Christ! It’s just that Christ could not be the “Sacred Bread” without the “wheat.” How can you fail to see that? (Or maybe you didn’t even read it.)

Do you never look at a sunset and say “Thank you, Lord, for creating this beauty?” If you don’t you are very ungrateful. The five points of prayer include not only Praise, but Thanksgiving. We are extremely ungrateful if we do not thank God for creating Mary and thereby giving us Jesus our Savior. And to not thank God for the example of the holy lives of the saints is also very ungrateful.

Just go through the bible and everywhere you see wheat no matter the context, write in "Mary", then you'll get the picture. A fuzzy picture, kind of like NBC coverage of the Olympics

I've never heard that other fake Catholic prayer in my life.

Let me put it to you this way.

Do you love our God given country? Do you believe that as long as you love God first, you can also love your country?

Do you believe that it is important that American children understand the history and values of the country they may be asked to die for? Do you reject as idol worship the many symbols associated with this country, or see them as a sign of honor?

You may be happy to know that people in this country no longer have respect or honor for what this country represents, much less the beautiful symbols such as flags. When I was young, flags were everywhere on Flag Day. Now Flag Day isn't even mentioned. You'd be hard pressed to find a student who knows George Washington's biography.

How many people were inspired by Ronald Reagan? How many people still have pictures of him? Do you think they are going to hell?

It may also make you happy to know that the Blessed Mother is no longer honored than Abraham Lincoln, sadly even among Catholics. Instead, these are the icons our American youth are given.

Did it ever occur to you that maybe God knew what he was by giving us the example of Jesus' mother as an icon of the ideal woman and mother? She was humble, simple, and willing to sacrifice. She was obedient no matter what, she suffered without ever questioning God, and she loved unconditionally.

Sadly, So many lost girls have no idea what a true woman should be. The enemy is so deceptive.

The bible is filled with people who are awe inspiring, have amazing testimonies to God, and have served Him well. If it bothers you that the Catholic faith includes the people who served God, such as St. Peter, or gives Jesus' mother a place of honor, then I'm sure, out of intellectual honesty, you refuse to salute your American flag right? Actually you shouldn't even have one. If you don't distinguish between love/honor and worship, then an American Flag would surely be blasphemous in your mind.

Sadly, lack of respect, honor, values, charity, heardened hearts, and lack of brotherly love, is why this country is in the state it is. Perhaps we deserved this government. May God have mercy on us.
