The Book of Mormon vs Mormonism
By Richard Packham
Most people - Mormons and non-Mormons alike - assume that the Mormon religion is based on its holy book, the Book of Mormon and that by reading that book one can learn what Mormonism is all about. Mormon missionaries usually try to get prospective converts ("investigators") to read it as soon as possible, implying that by doing so the investigator will get an accurate idea of Mormonism. Although the publication of the Book of Mormon in 1830 was the impetus for the founding of the Mormon church (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), Mormonism is not rooted doctrinally in the Book of Mormon. It is used primarily for faith-inspiring stories, not for doctrine, even though God (through Joseph Smith) declared that it contains "the fulness of the Gospel" (D&C 20:9). Its doctrinal content is quite representative of wide-spread Christian beliefs in Joseph Smith's day. Many of its doctrines are now ignored or have been abandoned by the church, and many other doctrines have been adopted, as the following summary shows:
Abbreviations UsedD&C - Doctrine and Covenants
DoS - Doctrines of Salvation, by Joseph Fielding Smith (3 volumes)
JoD - Journal of Discourses (26 volumes)
MD - Mormon Doctrine, 2d edition, by Bruce R. McConkie
TJS - Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith

Mormon Doctrine |
Book of Mormon |
Heaven consists of three levels or "glories"; evil people go to the lowest, "hell" (D&C 76:81-90), the glory of which "surpasses all understanding. Only Mormon apostates do not go to heaven, but to "outer darkness" (D&C 76:31-39) |
Only two possible fates after death: heaven or hell. Levels or degrees of heaven are not mentioned. |
Jesus and God the Father are separate beings. (D&C 130:22) |
Jesus and God the Father are the same. (Mosiah 3:8, 15:1-5, Ether 4:7, 12) |
God has a body of flesh and bones. (D&C 130:22) |
God is a spirit. (Alma 18:26-28) |
God was once a man like us, and progressed to godhood. (TJS 342-345) |
God does not change and has never changed. (Mormon 9:9, Moroni 8:18) |
There are many gods. (TJS 370-373) |
There is only one God. (Alma 11:28-30) |
We can become gods ourselves. (D&C 76:58, TJS 342-345) |
No mention of this idea. |
We lived with God in a spirit world (a "premortal existence") before being born into this life. (D&C 49:17, 93:23-29, 138:55-56) |
No mention of this idea. |
God is the literal father of our spirits, conceived by him and our "Mother in Heaven" (MD 516) |
No mention of this idea. |
Mary conceived Jesus by natural means, namely, God the Father impregnated her. (MD 546-47, JoD 1:50-51, 8:115, 11:268) |
Mary conceived Jesus "by the power of the Holy Ghost" (Alma 7:10), by being "carried away in the spirit" (1 Nephi 11:15-19) |
Those who do not accept the gospel in this life will have the opportunity to do so after death, and can receive baptism by proxy (D&C 127, 128) |
Salvation must be attained in this life; after one dies it is too late (Alma 34:34, 2 Nephi 9:38, Mosiah 2:36-39). No mention of baptism for the dead. |
David and Solomon did nothing wrong by having many wives. (D&C 132:38-39) |
The polygamy of David and Solomon was "abominable" to the Lord (Jacob 2:24) |
Priesthood divided into an upper (" after the order of Melchizedek") and lower ("Aaronic") priesthood |
No distinction between "priests" and "high priests"; priesthood is "after the order of [the Son of] God" (Alma 4:20, 13:1-12). No mention of "Aaronic" priesthood. |
Salvation in the highest heaven ("exaltation") requires undergoing the "endowment" initiation ceremony in a temple, the details of which are kept strictly secret. The participants are required to take numerous oaths, which are also secret. Details |
"Secret combinations" requiring secret oaths are condemned. (Mormon 8:27, 40, 2 Nephi 26:22, Helaman 6:22, and many others.) No mention of any such ritual as part of the gospel. No mention of "exaltation" or "endowment." |
Exaltation requires marriage in a Mormon temple. (D&C 131:1-4) |
No mention of this doctrine. |
"Celestial marriage" lasts for time and all eternity. (DoS 2:58 ff) |
No mention of this doctrine. |
The "first resurrection" is only for the righteous. (D&C 76:64. 63:18) |
The "first resurrection" is for all who died before Christ's resurrection, righteous and unrighteous alike (Mosiah 15:24, Alma 40:16-17) |
The "idea that the Father and the Son dwell in a man's heart" is false. (D&C 130:31; verse 22 says that it is the Holy Ghost that "dwell[s] in us") |
"The Lord" dwells in the hearts of the righteous. (Alma 34:36) |
The Lord's Supper ("the sacrament") consists of bread and water. |
The Lord's Supper should consist of bread and wine. (3 Nephi 18:1-9, Moroni 5) |
Only the priest blessing the sacrament kneels. |
The priest is to kneel with the church while blessing the sacrament. (Moroni 4:2; see also D&C 20:76) |
Use of alcohol, coffee, tea ("hot drinks") is forbidden. (D&C 89) |
No such commandment. |
Church is governed by the three men of the "First Presidency," higher in authority than the Quorum of Twelve. |
Jesus placed twelve disciples over the church he founded in America. (3 Nephi 12, passim) No "first presidency" mentioned. |
Except for Joseph Smith, all prophets are promoted to that office by those above them in rank, and by seniority. They work their way up to the top. |
Prophets are called directly by God. |
The church is trying to befriend people of other religions with the message "All churches have some truth"; "The church has always extended a hand of friendship and fellowship to those of other faiths, and will continue to do so." |
There are two churches only: the true church and the "church of the devil," "the whore of Babylon" (1 Nephi 14:10-12). A church which seeks to become "popular in the eyes of the world" is of the devil. (1 Nephi 22:23) |
Since 1978 the church claims that it is not racist, that all races are equal and that the color of a person's skin has no religious significance. |
A dark skin is a curse from God, a punishment for one's unrighteousness (or the unrighteousness of one's ancestors). A dark skin can become light through righteousness. (1 Nephi 12:23, 2 Nephi 5:21, Alma 3:6, Mormon 5:15, Jacob 3:8-9, 3 Nephi 2:15) |
The church teaches that faith, repentance, baptism are the "first principles" of the gospel, but that in order to obtain the highest degree of heaven, much more is required (obedience, tithes, endowment, etc.) |
Christ says that the gospel is faith, repentance, baptism ONLY. Any teaching beyond that will lead to hell 3 Nephi 11:31-40 |
Conclusion
Many Mormons have never read the Book of Mormon from cover to cover, and are perhaps unaware at how the doctrines of their church differ so drastically from the teachings of their own basic scripture, which - according to their eighth "Article of Faith" - they believe to be the word of God. When confronted with these fundamental differences (and even contradictions) their first line of defense is to claim that the Mormon church is a church of "continuing revelation" (ninth Article of Faith), that being the purpose of a living prophet. This overlooks the fact that the Book of Mormon was said by God to contain the "fulness" of the Gospel. Some Mormon apologists claim that "fulness" does not mean "complete," but rather "fundamentals," or "basics," and that the Book of Mormon does contain the "first principles" of faith, repentance, baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost. This argument fails when seeing the meaning of "fulness" as used in other Mormon scriptures, where it does, indeed, mean "complete," "nothing lacking," "nothing left out."

So, was Joseph a “wicked, darker-skinned Lamanite,” then for his seed NOT to have been utterly destroyed?

I am a convert to Mormonism. I have found much spiritual satisfaction in my faith. I have heard many criticisms directed towards the LDS church over the years and I understand in some cases where the critics are coming from. I can only say that sincere study and prayer in humility before God is the best way to receive guidance.
I know many wonderful members in the Church who are humble followers of Christ. I have seen the influence for good the Church has had in the lives of so many people. People changing from sin to righteousness - young people who are committed to chastity and virtue, people who believe in God as their Father and Jesus as their Savior, who pray and serve their fellow beings, and who teach their children to do the same by word and example.
The way some people speak of the Church makes it out to be an instrument of the devil himself. I have found the opposite to be true.

There is an exception to that rule.

From the chart:
There is only one God. (Alma 11:28-30) [Last col., 5th row down]
The BoM is rife with passages indicating only one God exists:
1 Nephi 13:41
2 Nephi 11:7
2 Nephi 31:21
Mosiah 15:1-5
Mosiah 16:15
Alma 14:5
Ether 2:8
Ether 3:14-16
Ether 4:7
Mormon 7:7
Even the early D&C passages say this -- D&C 20:12, 17, 19, 28...In fact D&C 20:19 says "the ONLY true and living God."
Mormons, how many "Onlies" do you have??? When you introduce your wife, do you say, "Here, let me introduce you to Sheila, my only wife" -- and then does that mean there's a harem on the side???
Or do you say, "Well, Sheila's my 'only wife,' wink-wink, nod-nod, but I want to assure you that she's the ONLY one with which I have anything to do sexually"???
ALL: What happened is that Smith evolved in promoting his belief in polytheism...as you see in his later passages (D&C 121:32; D&C 132:19-20, 37; Book of Abraham, chapters 4 & 5).
And the following is among reasons why Walter Martin named his book, "The Maze of Mormonism." 'Cause just on the # of gods alone, Mormon "scriptures" flatly contradict each other:
The D&C (20) contradicts the D&C (121; 132).
The Pearl of Great Price (Moses 1:6) contradicts the Pearl of Great Price (Abraham 4 & 5).
The Book of Mormon doesn't actually contradict the Book of Mormon (it only teaches one God!)
Smith's revised version of the KJV Bible even contradicts Joseph Smith! (see JST about these one-God passages:)
Mark 12:29 -- which Smith changed to Mark 12:35
See Eph. 4:6 in JST
See 1 Tim. 2:5 in JST
See 1 John 5:7 in JST
No wonder when I ask Mormons how many gods they have -- like I did Teppe in one thread, we can't get straight answers (or at times ANY answer!). No wonder the leading Lds apostle on Mormon Doctrine, the only one with enough gall to actually write a book by that title, says in his own book that they worship 3 gods, and then changes it to 2 gods...all in the same book.
(And then later in his life, changed his mind and told students at a BYU devotional in the early 80s that they don't worship the Holy Ghost and they don't worship Jesus!)

We can become gods ourselves. (D&C 76:58, TJS 342-345)
It'so right here: in MORMON 'scripture'...
THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
SECTION 132
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Nauvoo, Illinois, recorded July 12, 1843, relating to the new and everlasting covenant, including the eternity of the marriage covenant, as also plurality of wives. HC 5: 501507. Although the revelation was recorded in 1843, it is evident from the historical records that the doctrines and principles involved in this revelation had been known by the Prophet since 1831.
16, Exaltation is gained through the new and everlasting covenant; 714, The terms and conditions of that covenant are set forth; 1520, Celestial marriage and a continuation of the family unit enable men to become gods; 2125, The strait and narrow way that leads to eternal lives; 2627, Law given relative to blasphemy against the Holy Ghost; 2839, Promises of eternal increase and exaltation made to prophets and saints in all ages; 4047, Joseph Smith is given the power to bind and seal on earth and in heaven; 4850, The Lord seals upon him his exaltation; 5157, Emma Smith is counseled to be faithful and true; 5866, Laws governing the plurality of wives are set forth.
1
Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you my servant Joseph, that inasmuch as you have inquired of my hand to know and understand wherein I, the Lord, justified my servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as also Moses, David and Solomon, my servants, as touching the principle and doctrine of their having many
awives and
bconcubines
2 Behold, and lo, I am the Lord thy God, and will answer thee as touching this matter.
3 Therefore,
aprepare thy heart to receive and
bobey the instructions which I am about to give unto you; for all those who have this law revealed unto them must obey the same.
4 For behold, I reveal unto you a new and an everlasting
acovenant; and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye
bdamned; for no one can
creject this covenant and be permitted to enter into my glory.
5 For all who will have a
ablessing at my hands shall abide the
blaw which was appointed for that blessing, and the conditions thereof, as were instituted from before the foundation of the world.
6 And as pertaining to the new and
aeverlasting covenant, it was instituted for the fulness of my
bglory; and he that receiveth a fulness thereof must and shall abide the law, or he shall be damned, saith the Lord God.
7 And verily I say unto you, that the
aconditions of this law are these: All covenants, contracts, bonds, obligations,
boaths,
cvows, performances, connections, associations, or expectations, that are not made and entered into and
dsealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, of him who is
eanointed, both as well for time and for all eternity, and that too most holy, by
frevelation and commandment through the medium of mine anointed, whom I have appointed on the earth to hold this
gpower (and I have appointed unto my servant Joseph to hold this
hpower in the last days, and there is never but one on the earth at a time on whom this power and the
ikeys of this priesthood are conferred), are of no efficacy, virtue, or force in and after the resurrection from the dead; for all contracts that are not made unto this end have an end when men are dead.
8 Behold, mine house is a house of
aorder, saith the Lord God, and not a house of confusion.
9 Will I
aaccept of an offering, saith the Lord, that is not made in my name?
10 Or will I receive at your hands that which I have not
aappointed?
11 And will I appoint unto you, saith the Lord, except it be by law, even as I and my Father
aordained unto you, before the world was?
12 I am the Lord thy God; and I give unto you this commandmentthat no man shall
acome unto the Father but by me or by my word, which is my law, saith the Lord.
13 And everything that is in the world, whether it be ordained of men, by
athrones, or principalities, or powers, or things of name, whatsoever they may be, that are not by me or by my word, saith the Lord, shall be thrown down, and shall
bnot remain after men are dead, neither in nor after the resurrection, saith the Lord your God.
14 For whatsoever things remain are by me; and whatsoever things are not by me shall be shaken and destroyed.
15 Therefore, if a
aman marry him a wife in the world, and he marry her not by me nor by my word, and he covenant with her so long as he is in the world and she with him, their covenant and marriage are not of force when they are dead, and when they are out of the world; therefore, they are not bound by any law when they are out of the world.
16 Therefore, when they are out of the world they neither marry nor are given in
amarriage; but are appointed angels in
bheaven, which angels are ministering
cservants, to minister for those who are worthy of a far more, and an exceeding, and an eternal weight of glory.
17 For these angels did not abide my law; therefore, they cannot be enlarged, but remain separately and singly, without exaltation, in their saved condition, to all eternity; and from henceforth are not gods, but are
aangels of God forever and ever.
18 And again, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife, and make a covenant with her for time and for all eternity, if that
acovenant is not by me or by my word, which is my law, and is not sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, through him whom I have anointed and appointed unto this power, then it is not valid neither of force when they are out of the world, because they are not joined by me, saith the Lord, neither by my word; when they are out of the world it cannot be received there, because the angels and the gods are appointed there, by whom they cannot pass; they cannot, therefore, inherit my glory; for my house is a house of order, saith the Lord God.
19 And again, verily I say unto you, if a man
amarry a wife by my word, which is my law, and by the new and
beverlasting covenant, and it is
csealed unto them by the Holy Spirit of
dpromise, by him who is anointed, unto whom I have appointed this power and the
ekeys of this priesthood; and it shall be said unto themYe shall come forth in the first resurrection; and if it be after the first resurrection, in the next resurrection; and shall inherit
fthrones, kingdoms, principalities, and powers, dominions, all heights and depthsthen shall it be written in the Lambs
gBook of Life, that he shall commit no
hmurder whereby to shed innocent
iblood, and if ye abide in my covenant, and commit no murder whereby to shed innocent blood, it shall be done unto them in all things whatsoever my servant hath put upon them, in time, and through all eternity; and shall be of full force when they are out of the world; and they shall pass by the angels, and the gods, which are set there, to their
jexaltation and glory in all things, as hath been sealed upon their heads, which glory shall be a fulness and a continuation of the
kseeds forever and ever.
20
Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from
aeverlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them.
Then shall they be bgods, because they have
call power, and the angels are subject unto them.
21 Verily, verily, I say unto you, except ye abide my
alaw ye cannot attain to this glory.
22 For
astrait is the gate, and narrow the
bway that leadeth unto the exaltation and continuation of the
clives, and few there be that find it, because ye receive me not in the world neither do ye know me.
23 But if ye receive me in the world, then shall ye know me, and shall receive your exaltation; that
awhere I am ye shall be also.
24 This is
aeternal livesto
bknow the only wise and true God, and Jesus Christ, whom he hath
csent. I am he. Receive ye, therefore, my law.
25
aBroad is the gate, and wide the way that leadeth to the
bdeaths; and many there are that go in thereat, because they
creceive me not, neither do they abide in my law.
26 Verily, verily, I say unto you, if a man marry a wife according to my word, and they are sealed by the
aHoly Spirit of promise, according to mine appointment, and he or she shall commit any sin or transgression of the new and everlasting covenant whatever, and all manner of blasphemies, and if they
bcommit no murder wherein they shed innocent blood, yet they shall come forth in the first resurrection, and enter into their exaltation; but they shall be destroyed in the flesh, and shall be
cdelivered unto the buffetings of
dSatan unto the day of
eredemption, saith the Lord God.
27 The
ablasphemy against the Holy Ghost, which shall
bnot be
cforgiven in the world nor out of the world, is in that ye commit
dmurder wherein ye shed innocent blood, and assent unto my death, after ye have received my new and everlasting covenant, saith the Lord God; and he that abideth not this law can in nowise enter into my glory, but shall be
edamned, saith the Lord.
28 I am the Lord thy God, and will give unto thee the
alaw of my Holy Priesthood, as was ordained by me and my Father before the world was.
29
aAbraham received all things, whatsoever he received, by revelation and commandment, by my word, saith the Lord, and hath entered into his exaltation and sitteth upon his throne.
30
aAbraham received promises concerning his seed, and of the fruit of his loinsfrom whose
bloins ye are, namely, my servant Josephwhich were to continue so long as they were in the world; and as touching Abraham and his seed, out of the world they should continue; both in the world and out of the world should they continue as innumerable as the
cstars; or, if ye were to count the sand upon the seashore ye could not number them.
31 This promise is yours also, because ye are of
aAbraham, and the promise was made unto Abraham; and by this law is the continuation of the works of my Father, wherein he glorifieth himself.
32 Go ye, therefore, and do the
aworks of Abraham; enter ye into my law and ye shall be saved.
33 But if ye enter not into my law ye cannot receive the promise of my Father, which he made unto Abraham.
34 God
acommanded Abraham, and Sarah gave
bHagar to Abraham to wife. And why did she do it? Because this was the law; and from Hagar sprang many people. This, therefore, was fulfilling, among other things, the promises.
35 Was Abraham, therefore, under condemnation? Verily I say unto you, Nay; for I, the Lord,
acommanded it.
36 Abraham was
acommanded to offer his son Isaac; nevertheless, it was written: Thou shalt not
bkill. Abraham, however, did not refuse, and it was accounted unto him for
crighteousness.
37 Abraham received
aconcubines, and they bore him children; and it was accounted unto him for righteousness, because they were given unto him, and he abode in my law; as Isaac also and
bJacob did none other things than that which they were commanded; and because they did none other things than that which they were commanded, they have entered into their
cexaltation, according to the promises, and sit upon thrones, and are not angels but are gods.
38 David also received
amany wives and concubines, and also Solomon and Moses my servants, as also many others of my servants, from the beginning of creation until this time; and in nothing did they sin save in those things which they received not of me.
39
aDavids wives and concubines were
bgiven unto him of me, by the hand of Nathan, my servant, and others of the prophets who had the
ckeys of this power; and in none of these things did he
dsin against me save in the case of
eUriah and his wife; and, therefore he hath
ffallen from his exaltation, and received his portion; and he shall not inherit them out of the world, for I
ggave them unto another, saith the Lord.
40 I am the Lord thy God, and I gave unto thee, my servant Joseph, an
aappointment, and restore all things. Ask what ye will, and it shall be given unto you according to my word.
41 And as ye have asked concerning adultery, verily, verily, I say unto you, if a man
areceiveth a wife in the new and everlasting covenant, and if she be with another man, and I have not appointed unto her by the holy
banointing, she hath committed
cadultery and shall be destroyed.
42 If she be not in the new and everlasting covenant, and she be with another man, she has
acommitted adultery.
43 And if her husband be with another woman, and he was under a
avow, he hath broken his vow and hath committed adultery.
44 And if she hath not committed adultery, but is innocent and hath not broken her vow, and she knoweth it, and I reveal it unto you, my servant Joseph, then shall you have power, by the power of my Holy Priesthood, to take her and
agive her unto him that hath not committed
badultery but hath been
cfaithful; for he shall be made ruler over many.
45 For I have conferred upon you the
akeys and power of the priesthood, wherein I
brestore all things, and make known unto you all things in due time.
46 And verily, verily, I say unto you, that whatsoever you
aseal on earth shall be sealed in heaven; and whatsoever you
bbind on earth, in my name and by my word, saith the Lord, it shall be eternally bound in the heavens; and whosesoever sins you
cremit on earth shall be remitted eternally in the heavens; and whosesoever sins you retain on earth shall be retained in heaven.
47 And again, verily I say, whomsoever you bless I will bless, and whomsoever you curse I will
acurse, saith the Lord; for I, the Lord, am thy God.
48 And again, verily I say unto you, my servant Joseph, that whatsoever you give on earth, and to whomsoever you
agive any one on earth, by my word and according to my law, it shall be visited with blessings and not cursings, and with my power, saith the Lord, and shall be without condemnation on earth and in heaven.
49 For I am the Lord thy God, and will be
awith thee even unto the
bend of the world, and through all eternity; for verily I
cseal upon you your
dexaltation, and prepare a throne for you in the kingdom of my Father, with Abraham your
efather.
50 Behold, I have seen your
asacrifices, and will forgive all your sins; I have seen your
bsacrifices in obedience to that which I have told you. Go, therefore, and I make a way for your escape, as I
caccepted the offering of Abraham of his son Isaac.
51 Verily, I say unto you: A commandment I give unto mine handmaid, Emma Smith, your wife, whom I have given unto you, that she stay herself and partake not of that which I commanded you to offer unto her; for I did it, saith the Lord, to
aprove you all, as I did Abraham, and that I might require an offering at your hand, by covenant and sacrifice.
52 And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith,
areceive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph, and who are virtuous and pure before me; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Lord God.
53 For I am the Lord thy God, and ye shall obey my voice; and I give unto my servant Joseph that he shall be made ruler over many things; for he hath been
afaithful over a few things, and from henceforth I will strengthen him.
54 And I command mine handmaid, Emma Smith, to abide and
acleave unto my servant Joseph, and to none else. But if she will not abide this commandment she shall be
bdestroyed, saith the Lord; for I am the Lord thy God, and will destroy her if she abide not in my law.
55 But if she will not abide this commandment, then shall my servant Joseph do all things for her, even as he hath said; and I will bless him and multiply him and give unto him an
ahundredfold in this world, of fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, houses and lands, wives and children, and crowns of
beternal lives in the eternal worlds.
56 And again, verily I say, let mine handmaid
aforgive my servant Joseph his trespasses; and then shall she be forgiven her trespasses, wherein she has trespassed against me; and I, the Lord thy God, will bless her, and multiply her, and make her heart to
brejoice.
57 And again, I say, let not my servant Joseph put his property out of his hands, lest an enemy come and destroy him; for
aSatan bseeketh to destroy; for I am the Lord thy God, and he is my servant; and behold, and lo, I am with him, as I was with Abraham, thy father, even unto his
cexaltation and glory.
58 Now, as touching the law of the
apriesthood, there are many things pertaining thereunto.
59 Verily, if a man be called of my Father, as was
aAaron, by mine own voice, and by the voice of him that
bsent me, and I have endowed him with the
ckeys of the power of this priesthood, if he do anything in my name, and according to my law and by my word, he will not commit
dsin, and I will justify him.
60 Let no one, therefore, set on my servant Joseph; for I will justify him; for he shall do the sacrifice which I require at his hands for his transgressions, saith the Lord your God.
61 And again, as pertaining to the law of the priesthoodif any man espouse a virgin, and desire to espouse
aanother, and the first give her consent, and if he espouse the second, and they are virgins, and have vowed to no other man, then is he justified; he cannot commit adultery for they are given unto him; for he cannot commit adultery with that that belongeth unto him and to no one else.
62 And if he have
aten virgins given unto him by this law, he cannot commit adultery, for they belong to him, and they are given unto him; therefore is he justified.
63 But if one or either of the ten virgins, after she is espoused, shall be with another man, she has committed adultery, and shall be destroyed; for they are given unto him to
amultiply and replenish the earth, according to my commandment, and to fulfil the promise which was given by my Father before the foundation of the world, and for their exaltation in the eternal worlds, that they may bear the souls of men; for herein is the work of my Father continued, that he may be
bglorified.
64 And again, verily, verily, I say unto you, if any man have a wife, who holds the keys of this power, and he teaches unto her the law of my priesthood, as pertaining to these things, then shall she believe and administer unto him, or she shall be destroyed, saith the Lord your God; for I will destroy her; for I will magnify my name upon all those who receive and abide in my law.
65 Therefore, it shall be lawful in me, if she receive not this law, for him to receive all things whatsoever I, the Lord his God, will give unto him, because she did not believe and administer unto him according to my word; and she then becomes the transgressor; and he is exempt from the law of Sarah, who administered unto Abraham according to the law when I commanded Abraham to take
aHagar to wife.
66 And now, as pertaining to this law, verily, verily, I say unto you, I will reveal more unto you, hereafter; therefore, let this suffice for the present. Behold, I am Alpha and Omega. Amen.

Welcome to
Mormonism 101
We'll begin in a minute.
In the mean time, you may enjoy the art that is on our walls.
You may think some of our doctrine a bit shifty; but if you study it real close in one area, it will be quite steady.
Please ignore any shifting you THINK you observe elsewhere, for if you look at THAT area; it, too, will become fixed.

Mormon theology is proof positive that most people do not give a rats *** about theology. The more fool them, then; whatever their church or religion.

JOSEPH SMITHMATTHEW
An extract from the translation of the Bible as revealed to Joseph Smith the Prophet in 1831: Matthew 23: 39 and chapter 24.
Jesus foretells the impending destruction of JerusalemHe also discourses on the second coming of the Son of Man, and the destruction of the wicked.
1 aFor I say unto you, that ye shall not see me henceforth and know that I am he of whom it is written by the prophets, until ye shall say: Blessed is he who bcometh in the name of the Lord, in the clouds of heaven, and all the holy angels with him. Then understood his disciples that he should come again on the earth, after that he was glorified and ccrowned on the right hand of God.
2 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple; and his disciples came to him, for to ahear him, saying: Master, show us concerning the buildings of the temple, as thou hast saidThey shall be thrown down, and left unto you desolate.
3 And Jesus said unto them: See ye not all these things, and do ye not understand them? Verily I say unto you, there shall not be left here, upon this temple, one astone upon another that shall not be thrown down.
4 And Jesus left them, and went upon the Mount of Olives. And as he sat upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying: Tell us when shall these things be which thou hast said concerning the destruction of the temple, and the Jews; and what is the asign of thy bcoming, and of the cend of the world, or the destruction of the dwicked, which is the end of the world?
5 And Jesus answered, and said unto them: Take heed that no man deceive you;
6 For many shall come in my name, sayingI am aChristand shall deceive many;
7 Then shall they deliver you up to be aafflicted, and shall kill you, and ye shall be bhated of all nations, for my names sake;
8 And then shall many be aoffended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another;
9 And many afalse prophets shall arise, and shall deceive many;
10 And because iniquity shall abound, the alove of many shall wax cold;
11 But he that remaineth asteadfast and is not overcome, the same shall be saved.
12 When you, therefore, shall see the aabomination of bdesolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, concerning the destruction of cJerusalem, then you shall stand in the dholy place; whoso readeth let him understand.
13 Then let them who are in Judea flee into the amountains;
14 Let him who is on the housetop flee, and not return to take anything out of his house;
15 Neither let him who is in the field return back to take his clothes;
16 And wo unto them that are with achild, and unto them that give suck in those days;
17 Therefore, pray ye the Lord that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the Sabbath day;
18 For then, in those days, shall be great atribulation on the bJews, and upon the inhabitants of cJerusalem, such as was not before sent upon Israel, of God, since the beginning of their kingdom until this time; no, nor ever shall be sent again upon Israel.
19 All things which have befallen them are only the beginning of the sorrows which shall come upon them.
20 And except those days should be shortened, there should none of their flesh be asaved; but for the elects sake, according to the bcovenant, those days shall be shortened.
21 Behold, these things I have spoken unto you concerning the Jews; and again, after the tribulation of those days which shall come upon Jerusalem, if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there, believe him not;
22 For in those days there shall also arise false aChrists, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders, insomuch, that, if possible, they shall deceive the very elect, who are the elect according to the covenant.
23 Behold, I speak these things unto you for the aelects sake; and you also shall hear of bwars, and rumors of wars; see that ye be not troubled, for all I have told you must come to pass; but the end is not yet.
24 Behold, I have told you before;
25 Wherefore, if they shall say unto you: Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: Behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not;
26 For as the light of the morning cometh out of the aeast, and shineth even unto the west, and covereth the whole earth, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be.
27 And now I show unto you a parable. Behold, wheresoever the acarcass is, there will the eagles be bgathered together; so likewise shall mine elect be gathered from the four quarters of the earth.
28 And they shall hear of wars, and rumors of wars.
29 Behold I speak for mine elects sake; for nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there shall be afamines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
30 And again, because iniquity shall abound, the love of men shall wax acold; but he that shall not be overcome, the same shall be saved.
31 And again, this aGospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in all the world, for a witness unto all bnations, and then shall the end come, or the destruction of the wicked;
32 And again shall the aabomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, be fulfilled.
33 And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the asun shall be bdarkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the cstars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
34 Verily, I say unto you, this ageneration, in which these things shall be shown forth, shall not pass away until all I have told you shall be fulfilled.
35 Although, the days will come, that heaven and earth shall pass away; yet my awords shall not pass away, but all shall be fulfilled.
36 And, as I said before, after the atribulation of those days, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken, then shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven, and then shall all the tribes of the earth bmourn; and they shall see the cSon of Man dcoming in the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory;
37 And whoso atreasureth up my word, shall not be deceived, for the Son of Man shall bcome, and he shall send his cangels before him with the great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together the dremainder of his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
38 Now learn a parable of the afig-treeWhen its branches are yet tender, and it begins to put forth leaves, you know that summer is nigh at hand;
39 So likewise, mine elect, when they shall see all these things, they shall know that he is near, even at the doors;
40 But of that day, and hour, no one aknoweth; no, not the angels of God in heaven, but my Father only.
41 But as it was in the days of aNoah, so it shall be also at the coming of the Son of Man;
42 For it shall be with them, as it was in the days which were before the aflood; for until the day that Noah entered into the ark they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage;
43 And aknew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be.
44 Then shall be fulfilled that which is written, that in the alast days, two shall be in the field, the one shall be taken, and the other bleft;
45 Two shall be grinding at the mill, the one shall be taken, and the other left;
46 And what I say unto one, I say unto all men; awatch, therefore, for you know not at what hour your Lord doth come.
47 But know this, if the good man of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to have been broken up, but would have been ready.
48 Therefore be ye also aready, for in such an hour as ye think not, the Son of Man cometh.
49 Who, then, is a afaithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
50 Blessed is that aservant whom his lord, when he cometh, shall find so doing; and verily I say unto you, he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
51 But if that evil servant shall say in his heart: My lord adelayeth his coming,
52 And shall begin to smite his fellow-servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken,
53 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
54 And shall cut him asunder, and shall appoint him his portion with the hypocrites; there shall be weeping and agnashing of teeth.
55 And thus cometh the aend of the wicked, according to the prophecy of Moses, saying: They shall be cut off from among the people; but the end of the earth is not yet, but by and by.

People changing from sin to righteousness - young people who are committed to chastity and virtue, people who believe in God as their Father and Jesus as their Savior, who pray and serve their fellow beings, and who teach their children to do the same by word and example. Why do they NEED the LDS religious Organization® to do this things?

I can only say that sincere study and prayer in humility before God is the best way to receive guidance. I understand what you're saying, and after much prayer and study, I can only conclude that mormonism is a false religion that feeds off of one's desires to be like God.
Be careful with this desire. It's what got Lucifer in trouble.

I know many wonderful members in the Church who are humble followers of Christ. I have seen the influence for good the Church has had in the lives of so many people. People changing from sin to righteousness - young people who are committed to chastity and virtue, people who believe in God as their Father and Jesus as their Savior, who pray and serve their fellow beings, and who teach their children to do the same by word and example.Listen, I'm not going to deny that the Holy Ghost is 100% constrained by any religious organization from accomplishing His "work-arounds." After all, some Mormons are (some more than others) encouraged to read their Bibles. And God has promised in His Word that it wouldn't return empty.
So you & I won't disagree that the Word from the Bible is powerful & effective. It's living & active (Heb. 4:12). But what happens all too often to most Mormons is that they have been taught to distrust the Bible...that it's OK "insofar as correctly translated" -- and since Lds leaders don't tell their followers where it's incorrectly translated...despite the fact that the Lds church has even offered free KJV Bibles on commercials...it's all usually left as general doubt conveyed to Mormons.
...people who believe in God as their Father and Jesus as their Savior...
Yes, and also people who believe they, too, can become fellow gods...and they, too, can are to be fellow saviors...(Normandy, haven't you noticed this less-than-forthcoming "spirit" among Mormons to not complete their sentences...to tell only half-truths). Example on Lds "prophets" who have taught multiple saviors...and that Lds become this via its practice of proxy baptisms for the dead:
The "jesus" of whom you speak doesn't seem to have universally applicable blood, unlike Jesus of Nazareth whom I know. So instead, Mormon proxies need to be the real saviors of deceased mankind via proxy water & proxy Mormons:
Example #1 -- From 1974 LDS copyrighted book: "When living persons are baptized for the dead, they literally become saviors to others..."
(Don't you see? The problem we're dealing with here is that Mormons place themselves on par with Jesus re: godhood & saviorhood, calling themselves "literal...saviors")
Example #2 -- an LDS "prophet" speaking who was one of Joseph Smith's right hand men, John Taylor: ...we are the only people that know how to save our progenitors, how to save ourselves, and how to save our posterity in the celestial kingdom of God;...we in fact are the saviours of the world..." (Journal of Discourses, vol.6, p.163).
Sorry, Normandy but "saviors of the world" are not plentiful (1 John 4:14; John 4:42)
Example #3 -- another LDS "prophet" -- this one a nephew of Joseph Smith who was talking about what LDS do with the genealogical research uncovered: "... mortals have to be saviors on Mount Zion, acting by proxy for the dead." (LDS "prophet" Joseph Fielding Smith, The Way to Perfection, p. 325)
Example #4 -- Taylor (the Lds "prophet") again: "We know something about our progenitors, and God has taught us how to be saviors for them by being baptized for them in the flesh, that they may live according to God in the Spirit." (LDS "prophet" John Taylor, March 20,1870, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 14, 3/20/1870)
Example #5 -- the Mormon "why" of genealogy: "We have a great work before us in the redemption of our dead....There are fifty thousand millions of people in the spirit world...Those persons may receive their testimony, but they cannot be baptized in the spirit world, for somebody on earth must perform this ordinance for them in the flesh before they can receive part in the first resurrection and be worthy of eternal life." (LDS "prophet" Wilford Woodruff, JoD, Vol. 22, p. 234)
The way some people speak of the Church makes it out to be an instrument of the devil himself. I have found the opposite to be true.
Normandy, let's return to the chart posted here. Look at the last column on the right, 3rd row from the bottom: The Book of Mormon teaches: There are two churches only: the true church and the "church of the devil," "the whore of Babylon" (1 Nephi 14:10-12).
Now: Who claims which church to be "of the devil" & plants that within their "scripture?" (Why, Mormons do!) 1 Nephi 14:10 clearly says there's only "two" churches, right? Church A: Church of the Lamb. Church B: "Church of the devil."
Now, Normandy, I'm going to ask you a direct Q...(will I get a response?): Which church is the church of the Lamb and which church is the church of the devil?

From the chart: Jesus placed twelve disciples over the church he founded in America. (3 Nephi 12, passim) No "first presidency" mentioned. [Last col. on right, 5th from the bottom]
Q: Is the current Lds church structure a tacit admission that they don't believe the Book of Mormon to be true? (Or that they don't believe the Bible to be true?)
It seems to me they can't have both. Why?
#1: The LDS church claims to be the only true world-wide church of Jesus Christ.
#2: If it's world-wide, and not regional,
AND if it's as they say -- a "restoration" of the original church --
--then why haven't they set up their structural quorums to reflect what they say occurred around the time of Christ's appearance?
Why hasn't Christ set up, say a dozen members of the Quorum in the United States and another dozen elsewhere? Why hasn't there been 24-25 apostles set up around the world? (Lds say there were 12 in the Americas; and 12 original in the Middle East)
Do the math...that's 24...(apostle Paul & Judas' replacement meant the early church even had beyond 12)
Bottom line: No quorum of the 24, no "restoration" of the early church!!!

I understand in some cases where the critics are coming from. I can only say that sincere study and prayer in humility before God is the best way to receive guidance. One can be sincere and wrong at the same time (cue Linus in the pumpkin patch). Social aspects of mormonism can be commendable. But the key point is what is the foundation of mormonism built upon, and the mormon way of a subjective feeling about a subject is a poor excuse for real study.
What is being pointed out in this thread are the glaring contradictions between the Book of Mormon and fundmental mormon doctrine. If you honestly review the comparisons listed above, an honest person would see that the degree of contradictions between the two show that God is not behind either - for God is not a God of confusion. Secondly, because of the gross contradictions the probability is that mormonism was made up by men and not God.
Deep study surrounding the bom - its claims to document a group of people who grew to be a substantial population in the western hemisphere - and infact indicates that the Amerindians are descendants of this hebrew stock. In all honesty Normandy - where is the physical proof of this? Over Christmas, the foundations of a house from the time of Christ was uncovered in Nazereth - a building that Jesus may have helped construct (as a carpenter). Where are similarly acknowledged structures here? Furthermore, where did the horses, cattle (oxen), wheat/barley and other items come from - they have been shown not to have been here during the bom period, but introduced beginning with the spaniards.
In fact Normandy - I can show that based upon the OT period Lehi and company left Jerusalem, it is very UNlikely that they existed at all.
So if a book that claims to tell the true story is being shown to be false on mulitiple levels - archaeologically, historically, biologically, genetically, and doctrinally, among many others, is it wise to base one's salvation upon the claims of that document?
Take it a step further, since the claims of the bom cannot be supported even to the minimal ones the bible is placed against - how true is the writer of that same book? How spiritual is it for a stone used for occultic treasure seeking be used to "translate" an alledgedly found "treasure" (golden plates)? If, as according to the testimony of the scribes, this stone provided essentially word-for-word, letter by letter translation that has since had to be changed in about 4000 locations over the history of the bom.
Since we no longer have the golden plates to refer to for these changes, what means is there to evaluate the accuracy of smith's ability to supernaturally translate materials? We have the papyrus he used to create the book of abraham. Unfortunately, the boa bears no resemblence to the translation of the papyrus (found to be a common burial prayer scroll).
Please forgive me if it seems I'm shotgunning the issue. The point is, follow the logic, follow the evidence, follow the facts and discern fact from fiction. There is blind faith and there is reasonable faith.
The way some people speak of the Church makes it out to be an instrument of the devil himself. I have found the opposite to be true.
If mormonism is true, then everyone has little to fear, even non mormons. If mormonism is false - as indicated by a comparison to biblical standards - and Christianity is true, then the mormon has a lot to fear for. If the devil is using mormonism as a tool, deception is his key, and as long as he can keep mormons deceived into thinking that one's works will earn a higher heaven and pay for the salvation of Christ - he is happy and content to let you maintain that belief.
Compare who "Christ" is in Christianity and mormonism - as your late prophete Hinkley stated mormons "worship a different Christ" from Christianity.
Evaluate just who God is - an eternal, never changing, one and only God from everlasting to everlasting, or a mortal who progressed through humanity, to eventual godhood to join a plethora of other gods occupying the universe.
The biblical example is not prayer and humility - but detailed study - for which the Bereans were noted as being more 'noble' in their examination of Christianity.

I know many wonderful members in the Church who are humble followers of Christ. [Normandy]
Compare who "Christ" is in Christianity and mormonism - as your late prophete Hinkley stated mormons "worship a different Christ" from Christianity.Normandy, I guess I'd like for just once to hear a Mormon acknowledge that the apostle Paul taught there was more than one "jesus":
2 Cor. 11:4 -- "For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached..."
As Godzilla says, how is it that even Mormon leaders generically contend their is a distinct one? (Oh sure. They say they worship a "christ," but they maintain they worship a "different" Christ -- and on that, we as Christians agree):
"There are those outside the Church who say Latter-day Saints do not believe in the traditional Christ. No, I dont. The traditional Christ of whom they speak is not the Christ of whom I speak. LDS President Gordon B. Hinckley (LDS Church News, June 20, 1998)
IOW, the traditional Christ of whom we speak "is NOT the Christ of whom" Hinckley spoke.
Want more evidence?
It is true that many of the Christian churches worship a different Jesus Christ than is worshipped by the Mormons. LDS publication, Ensign Magazine, May 1977, p. 26
Four years after the Hinckley quote above, he said the following: As a Church we have critics, many of them. They say we do not believe in the traditional Christ of Christianity. There is some substance to what they say. Our faith, our knowledge is not based on ancient tradition, the creeds which came of a finite understanding and out of the almost infinite discussions of men trying to arrive at a definition of the risen Christ. Our faith, our knowledge comes of the witness of a prophet in this dispensation who saw before him the great God of the universe and His Beloved Son, the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ. (Gordon B. Hinckley, "We Look to Christ", from April 2002 General Conference.)
So the Mormon official publication says they worship a different Christ...
The Mormon "prophet" said they speak about, believe and acknowledge a different Christ...
Christians say they worship, speak of and belief another Jesus...
So. We are all on the same page...except you, Normandy?
Normandy (& other Mormons): Despite Lds apostle Bruce McConkie's admonition to BYU students in the early 80s that they weren't to directly worship Christ, have you ever noted in the Book of Mormon that Jesus is directly worshiped? (Not indirectly -- like worshipping the Father in Jesus Name...but directly!)
(Certainly this discussion belongs in a Mormonism vs. Book of Mormon thread!!!)
Look @ Mormon 7:7:
...given unto him to dwell in the presence of God in his kingdom, to sing ceaseless praises with the choirs above, unto the Father, and unto the Son, and unto the Holy Ghost, which are one God, in a state of happiness which hath no end. (Mormon 7:7) NOTE: The original 1830 Book of Mormon had the word "is" prior to one God...BoM editors then changed it to "are"...a "shaking-the-head" kind of thought given that they left other "testimony" untouched -- such as the 3 witnesses -- along with 2 Nephi 31:21 and Alma 11:44)
Look also at these 4 other verses:
4 Nephi 4:37: 37 Therefore the true believers in Christ, and the true worshipers of Christ, (among whom were the three disciples of Jesus who should tarry) were called Nephites, and Jacobites, and Josephites, and Zoramites.
2 Nephi 25:29 29 And now behold, I say unto you that the right way is to believe in Christ, and deny him not; and Christ is the Holy One of Israel; wherefore ye must bow down before him, and worship him with all your might, mind, and strength, and your whole soul; and if ye do this ye shall in nowise be cast out.
3 Nephi 11:17 17 Hosanna! Blessed be the name of the Most High God! And they did fall down at the feet of Jesus, and did worship him.
3 Nephi 17:10 10 And they did all, both they who had been healed and they who were whole, bow down at his feet, and did worship him;
Jesus is worshipped at least 6 times in the book of Matthew; twice in John; other times the angels worship Him in Hebrews and Revelation. Oh, Latter-day Saint...
...do you worship Jesus directly? (And by doing so, how many "gods" then do you worship? Doesn't Ether 3 and Alma 11 say Jesus IS God and there's ONLY one God?)
Oh, Mormon, beloved of Christ, have you...
...bowed down at his feet and openly worshiped Him?
...fallen at his feet and openly worshiped Him?
...worship[ed] him with all your might, mind, and strength, and your whole soul? (2 Nephi 25:29)
From the chart of this article: Salvation must be attained in this life; after one dies it is too late (Alma 34:34, 2 Nephi 9:38, Mosiah 2:36-39). No mention of baptism for the dead. [col. 2, 10th row down]
If mormonism is true, then everyone has little to fear, even non mormons. If mormonism is false - as indicated by a comparison to biblical standards - and Christianity is true, then the mormon has a lot to fear for [Godzilla]
Book of Mormon: Alma 42:16 says that eternal punishment is as eternal as the life of the soul. [It's not temporary] Alma 34:32-35 says there's no second chance: For behold THIS LIFE is the time for men to prepare to meet God...do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life...then cometh the night of darkness wherein THERE CAN BE NO LABOR PERFORMED. Ye CANNOT say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye CANNOT say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world. (I cited parts of vv. 32-34)
Both Mosiah 16:11 & 1 Nephi 15:35 says there's only TWO destinations post-death (no third destiny called "spirit prison" exists in the BoM...repeat 10 times...no third destiny called "spirit prison" exists in the BoM!!!, etc.)
