Mormon myths mostly harmless but unnecessary

...

A new Web site pitching itself as a Mormon myth-buster recently launched, causing me once again to wonder about why we Latter-day Saints take so much joy in spreading unsubstantiated stories about ourselves.

The site, HolyFetch.com, is run by Casey Cummings, a resident of Kaysville, Utah, who says he got interested in the world of Mormon myths when he was on his mission in Austria.

The site's basic format is similar to that of sites like snopes.com. People submit popular Mormon myths, and then Cummings investigates them and deems them either "true" or "false."

I'm frankly surprised that something like this hasn't been created by now. Or maybe it has been, and it just isn't very well publicized. In any case, the fact that such a Web site exists (and is enjoying moderate success by most accounts) is a comment, I think, on LDS culture.

There is not much at the site, but it serves as an interesting focal point. It's surprising that the stories of some of LDS's more famous myth makers are absent, Elder Paul H. Dunn for instance.

Dunn was a Mormon General Authority for 30 years. He rose to prominence with his extraordinary war stories and experiences as a professional baseball player. All of his famous and glamorous stories were exposed as lies, but only many years after selling millions of dollars of books and tapes to fellow Mormons.

Dunn never successfully explained how telling falsehoods can promote good morals. Instead, he compared his stories to the parables of Jesus and said, "I haven't purposely tried to embellish or rewrite history. I've tried to illustrate points that would create interest." Dunn added that he was, "...simply putting history in little finer packages" (The Salt Lake Tribune, Saturday, February 16, 1991 2B).

Dunn's theory that "theological and moral points" can be found in stories that have no basis in history is similar to the whole concept of the Mormonism itself. Like Dunn's stories, the foundations of Mormonism -- like the amazing account of the Book of Mormon and the story of Joseph Smith's first vision -- cannot be independently verified as historical events.

I don’t think Dunn’s tall tales qualify as urban legends. They were all about him, rather than a “friend of a friend” or a relative of an in-law or some other such distant acquaintance.

correct me if I’m wrong but Dunn & cohorts, etc & et.,al do not publicly DENY the Old Testament & New Testament as we know it in western civ, right?

They just have their own version.
SUpposed they came out & decried O&N Testament as truth ? what would happen then?

imho i think mormons are seriously mis-guided

Tithe! Tithe! Give Joe your MoNeY!!!!

HURRY!!!!

more fake "churches" to build. Bring on more Cultists!!!

Folks actually know about the fake mormon cult, right?

Nothing archaeologically or anthropologically is real about anything mormon; nothing can or will ever be proven in anything Joe EVER said.

The founder of mormon was a con man and a fraud. Who keeps buying into this smoke and mirrors?

Does anyone looking for a religion have any brain power?

You can read all the truths on mormonism right HERE by hundreds of former mormon folk.

I believe Dunn has passed away, and he said very little that I know of after his story telling came to light.

I imagine he would say he supports the Old and New Testament, since that is the LDS Church line.

Would that be their birth into preexistence or their natural birth?

But it is the Reformed Mormons who have the copyright to Joseph Smith jr.’s version of the Bible. The Reformed Mormons are centered in Independence Mo. and are friendly rivals of the Utah based church.

The biggest myth told by the LDS group is that Joseph Smith was led by an angel to a book with gold pages, written in “Reformed Egyptian,” that told the “history” of the Americas. If they can swallow that camel, then the gnats of their modern urban legends are quite easily gulped down.
