REXBURG -- The LDS Church has issued a statement regarding the church's stance on Idaho gubernatorial candidate Rex Rammell's "elders only" meetings.
Kim Farah, spokeswomen for the LDS church, issued this statement:
"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is politically neutral and does not endorse or promote any candidate, party or platform. Accordingly, we hope that the campaign practices of political candidates would not suggest that their candidacy is supported by or connected to the church.
"The so-called 'White Horse Prophecy' is based on accounts that have not been substantiated by historical research and is not embraced as Church doctrine."
The White Horse Prophecy was allegedly given by LDS church founder Joseph Smith. According to accounts, Smith states that "the U.S. Constitution will hang by a thread" and that the elders of the LDS church will step up and save it.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Rammell reaffirmed his belief of the prophecy based on his own personal research of alleged statements by former LDS President Ezra Taft Benson.
He issued this statement to the press:
"In order to motivate my fellow elders in the LDS church, I have invited many to attend meetings to discuss Joseph's prophecy and how we can help save the Constitution. Some people, LDS and non-LDS, think it is inappropriate for me to hold such meetings. I think that is ridiculous.
"I have and will hold meetings with all kinds of groups in Idaho. I will speak to each group on matters that are of interest to and directly affect them individually. As such, it would only be appropriate for me to address Joseph Smith's prophecy with people who believe he was a prophet."
Rammell's first meeting will held at the Hampton Inn in Idaho Falls between 7 and 8 p.m. on Jan. 19. Subsequent meetings will be held in Rexburg, Blackfoot, Pocatello, Twin Falls and Boise.

Ah, spin control at work. A TBM holds to a common belief and if there is a chance it will embarrass the church, they immed jump into “this is unsubstantiated”.
Which is ironic, b/c HISTORICALLY the prophecy is MORE substantiated than many other “official” doctrines.

Yes, if they are good, faithful Temple attending Mormons, they believe that they will someday “progress” to becoming Gods of their own planet.

More comments from the LDS leadership about the “White Horse Prophecy”. Considering how many early LDS leadership (as well as later) taught this, there is much historical credence for the belief, contrary to what SLC just stated. Many of these quotes came from Josephs “inner cicle”, and they would be quite familiar with his teachings.

Smith said: ‘The ridiculous story about the `red horse,’ and `the black horse,’ and `the white horse,’ and a lot of trash that has been circulated about, and printed, and sent around as a great revelation given by the Prophet Joseph Smith, is a matter that was gotten up, I understand, some ten years after the death of the Prophet Joseph Smith, by two of our brethren, who put together some broken sentences from the Prophet that they may have heard him utter from time to time, and formulated this so-called revelation out of it, and it was never spoken by the Prophet in the manner in which they have put it forth. Now, these stories of revelations that are being circulated around are of no consequence, except for rumor and silly talk by persons that have no authority. The fact of the matter is simply here and this. No man can enter into God’s rest unless he will absorb the truth insofar that all error, all falsehood, all misunderstanding and misstatements, he will be able to sift thoroughly and dissolve, and know that it is error and not truth. Then why is this meeting LDS MEN only? And about the theology of politics.
Many rank and file LDS believe that God will make the US a LDS theocracy just like Utah was. I suspect Rammell is in this group.
At least they recognize the problem and are willing to discuss it! Most churches are still celebrating Obama’s election and the Senate health care vote as a victory for Jesus!
I don’t agree with LDS theology, but I will gladly share a foxhole with them to save America.

The thing is, that many LDS rank and file see this saving of the constitution to be a return to LDS theocracy.
BTW, this was first pronounced by JS while he was running for POTUS.
The LDS have “savior complexes”, both thru their genealogy/temple work and thru this prophecy.

The problem with this statement is that it came from a third party years later who gave authorship to Joseph Smith but the exact wording is really not known nor was it ever made a official Church Revelation.
at many times when this was said in Church meetings I am sure the situation going on gave merit but still it was reported by third party and no one has ever found the record made of this statement only that a member heard something years ago.
This is a juicy tidbit that has been swirling around for many years!
It also makes good fodder for the antiLDS to scare folks that the LDS are going to take over the world!
