Westvleteren "Trappist" Beer is ranked #1

The Westvleteren Brewery (Brouwerij Westvleteren) is a Belgian brewery founded in 1838 inside the Trappist Abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren in the Belgian municipality of Westvleteren, not far from the hops-producing town of Poperinge and the medieval city of Ypres. The brewery and its beers are usually referred to as Westvleteren. The brewery's three beers have acquired an international reputation for taste and quality, as well as the limited availability of the beers which are not brewed to normal commercial demands.

All I’ve evr heard is .. if there are four Catholics together, there’s usually a fifth.

“Hilaire Belloc’s rule of thumb, which is to avoid alcoholic beverages developed after the Reformation”

I can live with this imperative.

It would now be 100% politically incorrect, but, we used to say we were quadruply blessed-the one true church, allowed to drink, dance and smoke.

Is Jamesons a nice Catholic drink?

I’ve loved the stuff since I was an altar boy.

Unfortunately, the inn had just enough left for a single mug; the processionals would have to share.

I sense an approaching miracle tale.

As the tale goes, the mug did not run dry until all the people had drunk their fill.

Oh, yes indeedy.

Protestant drinking

When I think of Catholic drinking, I think of hereditary or behavioral alchoholism. Your results may vary.

How about the lost art of not drinking alcoholic beverages?

Leviticus 10:9 "Do not drink wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons with you, when you come into the tent of meeting, so that you may not die-- it is a perpetual statute throughout your generations--
Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, And whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise.

Avoid each extreme -- that's how you drink like a Catholic. This is the art of Catholic drinking.

Ah, I finally understand ... this is why there are no Catholic drunks.

(Do I need a /sarc???)

Or as Benjamin Franklin is rumored to have said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”

Back home in Nebraska, the Friday fish fry beer drinking fests at a local Catholic church were legendary.

I had a friend actually get kicked out of one once. Surprisingly, it wasn't because we were arguing (well, drinking) theology with the local priest. My friend managed to dump two full pitchers of beer walking back to the table.

Good times.
