So too, also, with tragedy.
The timing of this letter appears prima facie to cast a pall over the 1200+ ELCA Lutherans who will be attending the Society of the Holy Trinity who will be gathering in Retreat next Tuesday through Thursday in Mundelein, IL.

Ping.
Ping.
Should have done that before you got into this mess, Mark. Now's a little late, don't you think?
1200+ will be attending the Lutheran CORE convocation; 220 + will be attending the STS General Retreat.
My in-laws are ELCA. As conservative as they come— until it comes to Biblical authority. They visited my church the day our pastor encouraged yes on Prop 8. On the way home my father-in-law said it was great how different people can read the same Scripture and get a different meaning out of it.
I told him that he was doing just what Luther fought— taking the word of man over the Word of God. He didn’t like that too much.
Now that the die is cast, it’s time to mend fences. At least that’s the hope.
I grew up LCMS, my family became WELS when we moved to Southern Wisconsin, then became ELCA. I’m now back to LCMS, thank God. We left the ELCA exactly for this reason, with their preaching anti-Bush from the pulpit a second reason.
Heretic.
So how’ the hopey-changey homosexual thing working for you ELCA?
Hanson is an heresiarch, Pastor. As +John Chrysostomos reminds us, speaking of +Paul’s letter to Titus, “[By} Contentions, he means, with heretics, in which he would not have us labour to no purpose, where nothing is to be gained, for they end in nothing....”
Why do you even allow them to disturb you?
Hanson -- he who would be UN/WCC 'Bishop of the World'.
This is typical political speak signifying nothing. Does anyone really think that Bishop Hanson is open to those that oppose homosexuality? Let me translate what he is really saying: You idiots that dare question our decision to embrace homosexuality are too stupid to know that you can’t trust the Scriptures and you still believe in God’s law. Yes, we are heretics, but don’t stop sending us your money.
Haha Mr. Hanson, how’s that heresy working out for ya? Here’s hoping the congregations starve your ilk out of the church.
I’m LCMS as well. ELCA churches have been fighting this for years. I’m glad it’s hurting them in the pocket book. Perverting the word is exactly what the dark side wants.
Christians will be challenged and good for you to speak the truth, I think God was pleased with your response.....
Just another heretic in a long line of heretics.
Paging Tomás de Torquémada.
Hanson is saying the same thing his predecessor Chilstrom said on another but less drastic occasion: "Go if you wish but leave your wallets, please."
As I said yesterday, this Hanson is a singularly deceptive little man. More clever than the obtuse tec-priestess Schori, but like all leftist subversives, too clever by half.
This "pastoral letter" has nothing to do with "mending fences." It is clearly meant to provide talking points to the media; the faithful in the church can go pound salt for all Hanson cares. He and his cohorts already decided they could write off 20% of the church without losing too much money to survive.
This guy is Naive or just not that bright. On Nov. 1st, my Church will be voting to stay or leave the ELCA. In the mean time, over half of us are designating our giving for use in our congregation only. I am doing that until the vote. I would use other names to describe him, but that would not be nice.
