My in-laws are ELCA. As conservative as they come— until it comes to Biblical authority. They visited my church the day our pastor encouraged yes on Prop 8. On the way home my father-in-law said it was great how different people can read the same Scripture and get a different meaning out of it.
I told him that he was doing just what Luther fought— taking the word of man over the Word of God. He didn’t like that too much.
I grew up LCMS, my family became WELS when we moved to Southern Wisconsin, then became ELCA. I’m now back to LCMS, thank God. We left the ELCA exactly for this reason, with their preaching anti-Bush from the pulpit a second reason.
Christians will be challenged and good for you to speak the truth, I think God was pleased with your response.....
I get the same response from my mother when I try to talk to her about this. At eighty years old, she’s not about to leave her friends and the place she “feels God’s presence”. She asked me not to talk to her about it anymore. It makes me sad. She’s a VERY opinionated woman on everything else under the sun, but won’t stand up for the Word on this one.
