Obituary: The Episcopal Church in the United States (1789-2009) Cause of Death: Suicide

The Episcopal Church in the United States took another major step toward ensuring its own demise last week, by adopting a resolution endorsing the ordination of homosexuals as clergy and bishops.

The resolution, adopted at the denomination’s General Convention, said that “gay and lesbian persons . . . have responded to God’s call and have exercised various ministries,” and declared that “God has called and may call such individuals, to any ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church.”

The resolution was widely interpreted as abandoning a moratorium on the ordination of homosexual bishops that was adopted after the furor surrounding the appointment of Gene Robinson, a homosexual man, as the Bishop of New Hampshire in 2003. Several branches of the worldwide Anglican Communion, particularly the more conservative churches in Africa, rejected the decision to elevate Robinson. In the U.S., a number of Episcopal parishes and dioceses have already left the Episcopal Church altogether, and they recently organized as the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA).

“The liberal Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Katherine Jefferts Schori, warned against recognition of the new ACNA by declaring that “schism is not a Christian act.”

She and her followers initiated the schism from the Body of Christ the moment they declared antichristian belifs.

A crying shame. I grew up in the Episcopal Church. Reverend Law is rolling over in his grave.

I gave up on the Episcopal Church a long time ago. I don’t know why I have been sitting around like I was waiting for some miracle to undo the work of liberal fools.

I have decided to formally break the last remaining ties that binds me to the denomination in which I was baptized and confirmed in my youth - before it became heretical and rejected its own centuries-old articles of relion.

I am converting to the Catholic faith. ACNA is too little, too late for this former Episcopalian.

If schism is an anti-Christian act, when will the Episcopals rejoin the Roman Catholics?

Thanks to Robert A. Cook, PE for the ping. Like nearly all on this list who were once Episcopalians, I left a long time ago (over a quarter-century ago). I don't fully understand those who remain (this includes two family members), but it's their call. For my part, I am (almost) daily focused on the growth and increasing strength of my Continuing Anglican province and her increasing communion with sister Anglican provinces.

We're no longer living in the lifeboats.

For the Episcopalians schism is worse than heresy. You can be the biggest heretic in the world in the Episcopal Church, but don’t take your money and run.

Huh? Does this woman know anything about the origins of the Anglican Church or even the origins of Christianity itself?

“schism is not a Christian act.”

So, according to this priestess, an act not condemned in the Bible is unchristian, but acts forbidden therein are allowed or even mandated. That's a typical leftest inversion, right there. The best way to fight this is by co-opting their own language: “gay and lesbian persons . . . have responded to God's call and have exercised various ministries,” becomes “schismatic persons . . . have responded to God's call and have exercised various ministries.” Logic is always the biggest hammer in the tool box because the logical respond to it and the illogical are impotent against it.

We left in 2003, after GC - that was our line in the sand.

Good luck on getting off your parish rolls! They will continue to use you to pad their numbers (they have to do SOMETHING since they're bleeding members).

Since a bishop will not transfer your letters to a non-ECUSA parish, the only way you can actually get off the list is transfer your letters to the parish of a sympathetic rector who will delete your name from his rolls. Otherwise, it's like the old Plain Truth magazine - you'll continue to get flyers and letters (and donation requests) til the end of time.

Thanks for the post. All it takes to see what problems come from having gay men, as priests in a church, can be found in court records, Catholic or Protestant, from around the country. Sometimes the records and the payments are swept under the rug as was the case of a church, St George in Laguna Park. A relative told me that first one priest was sent away for molesting the young boys, then after a short interval - 2-3 years, they put another in place, only to have him be sent away. The forgiving nature of people, in churches, goes beyond reasonable sanity.

It’s been a problem in ECUSA for years, but the media won’t expose it because ECUSA is a fellow traveler, unlike the Catholics.

Just out of curiosity, are there any Oregon Freepers on the Episcopalian ping list from Grace Episcopal Church in Astoria? That was where I was Baptised and Confirmed and I’m wondering what the status of that congregation is.

Amen!

We stuck around our conservative Anglican parish for awhile after Vicky Gene, waiting for the rector to lead us out.

He never did.

I was on the Vestry and I could not even get anyone to consider leaving.

Enough was enough, and we have been happily Orthodox since 2005.

Even though our old rector removed us from the rolls, we kept getting junk mail/magazines from the diocese. It took several letters of increasing sharpness and a personal visit to the Diocese office before the paper spam stopped coming.
