An ultraconservative group plans to ordain 13 Roman Catholic priests in Minnesota even though their elevations likely won't be recognized by the Vatican. The St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary, part of the Society of St. Pius X, will host the ordinations of 12 U.S.-based priests and another from France in Winona on Friday. The Vatican says ordinations by the society aren't legitimate, even though Pope Benedict XVI recently lifted the excommunications of its leaders. The society was founded by those opposed to the liberalizing reforms of the Second Vatican Council and especially its outreach to Jews and other religions. The U.S. priests come from New Jersey, California, Idaho, Georgia, Ohio, New Mexico, Virginia, Kansas, North Dakota and Missouri.

Is “illegitimate” actually a terminology used by the Church for things like this? I am not aware of it. I wonder if there is a problem with the translation. The ordinations are certainly non canonical.

Illicit and illegitimate are essentially the same thing and illicit (or irregular) is the standard term for this sort of thing—they are valid sacramentally but illicity in terms of canon-law. Illegitimate means essentially the same, though it’s not commonly employed in Church-English.
What I meant to say was that both illicit and illegitimate come from il-lex, outside the law—so they’d be the same as ir-regular (outside the regula, rule, standard, canon, law) and extra-canonical.
There may be a technical difference for canon lawyers between illicit and illegitimate. I can’t speak to that, not being a canon lawyer. Illicit is the more common term, at least that’s my impression.
the article says Vatican will not likely recognize their “elevation”. In fact, the vatican does/will recognize them as true priests, but will say they have no authorized ministry in the Church. Is this stiff really so hard to get right?
You mean illicit like how the local parish where I live uses leavened bread for the Sacrament and admitted it was valid but illicit?
How refreshing!... There is hope after all. One group that had enough of all this garbage.
I HONESTY believe, the Roman Catholic faithful MUST put pressure on Rome to do what's right.
I know some of you will hate me, but I feel is my duty to say ENOUGH! Someone has to do it.
Yes, but some illicit acts are more illicit than others :-)

As much or more valid than any Vatican II ordination.
Which is more illicit, the SSPX ordinations or the dancing girls at so many of our parishes and CATHEDRALS?
