Whose god? The theological response to the god-of-the-gaps

by Lael Weinberger

The god-of-the-gaps argument asserts that it is invalid to introduce God as an explanation for a scientific phenomenon that we cannot currently explain by naturalistic causes. Believers in naturalism take this a step further, and offer the god-of-the-gaps argument against any involvement of God in nature. However, the god-of-the-gaps argument is only good against a particular deistic approach to God and nature, and loses its potency when Scripture and science are pursued together...

NOT TRUE.

Another dismissive attitude about God. They have no evidence; and yet they exclaim/proclaim that God is not cause, or Presence in the world.

Big mistake.

“God forgive them for they know not what they do.”

I LOVE “MAN KIND”....

They claim to know how the universe was formed, the age of the earth and evolution.

Yet, they can not cure the common cold, FULLY explain how lightning and tornadoes are formed. Man can not replicate how the pyramids were made and thousands of other TANGIBLEs in life....

Yet they can teach evolution, “big bang”, etc in schools as gospel truth?

Remember, fascist nutcakes can’t rule if people believe in GOD! So they make up lies...pure and simple...

You know, with as many "evolution-in-the-gaps" arguments as the evos make, you'd think they'd learn not to pontificate like windbags on the "God-in-the-gaps" argument.

Everytime an evos says "we just haven't researched it enough yet", they're making an evolution-in-the-gaps argument.

I agree, why don't we just accuse people who believe in science of being witches and burn them at a stake?

“I agree, why don’t we just accuse people who believe in science of being witches and burn them at a stake?”

Say what? Science is one thing. Evolution is another. Don’t need to condemn science for what it is. Science in itself does have great value, doesn’t it? Science is fact based on rules (provided by God, by the way). But scientists are “too smart” to leave facts alone. They push with all their might inumerable theories on us us as “fact”.
The fact is - all their self proclaimed “scientific theories” amount to is just one more of Joe Blow’s opinions....and should be taken with a grain of salt. Don’t let ‘credentials’ fool ya......

There are two concepts that matter here as well, one that I will give credit to, of all people, the late Phil Hartman and the still living Sally Field; and the other concept to something few people have ever heard of, the “Abdala”.

Phil Hartman and Sally Field did a comedy sketch on Saturday Night Live, that was both funny and very thoughtful. In it, Sally Field played a housewife who invoked Jesus’ name continually, for amazingly petty and unimportant things, both begging for help and thanking Jesus in a bizarre manner over and over again.

Hartman, portraying Jesus, visits her to ask her to cut it back to just important things. He told her that he listens to all prayers, but that she needed to take responsibility for at least the ordinary parts of her life. But she is oblivious to her use of his name in vanity. She does not grasp her abdication of all authority and responsibility in her life.

Finally, in frustration, Jesus makes her forget his visit and disappears, leaving her to her endless stream of begging and ingratiation. The important lesson of the sketch is that it is not up to people to determine what God does or does not do, what God is involved with, is concerned about, etc. But that it is terribly vain to assume that we do, or that we can tell if God has.

The other concept I mentioned, of the “Abdala”, comes from the Middle East, and specifically Islam, though it is not a major part of their theology, and for an obvious reason.

The Abdala are entities known only to God, whose purpose it is to maintain the continuity of the world. However, they not only have their own covenant with God, different from the covenants of man with God, but mankind is supposed to leave them alone. That is, everything about them is unknown to us, and remain that way, except these things.

Unlike all other things, which mankind can label, describe, compare, contrast, number, analyze, dissect, and otherwise play with, the Abdala are out of our reach. We can say nothing about them, because we know nothing about them. We may not be able to know anything about them, our minds may not be capable of doing so.

But that also figures into the “god of the gaps” and the “god of the gaps argument”. That is, just because we don’t see it, can’t prove it, and can’t control it, doesn’t mean it just hasn’t been found yet, *or* that God is responsible, but also means that something else we don’t know about might also be responsible.

Evolution of the gaps is ok because the Evos just know deep down in their Darwin-shaped hearts that it could be no other way!

Sad that for millennia so many human beings have not been about to overcome the irrational aspect of their nature that causes them to project intentionality—gods—into the natural world and thus to waste the precious lives and minds inventing twisted excuses in order to hold on to their foolish fictions.

The Temple of Darwin’s natural selection god is foolish fiction indeed!
