Southern Baptist Convention's Richard Land Praises Obama Family Values (DAN GILGOFF)
US NEWS & WORLD REPORT BLOGGERS (DAN GILGOFF) ^ | April 2, 2009 | Dan Gilgoff

I spoke today with Richard Land, public policy chief of the Southern Baptist Convention—the nation's largest evangelical denomination—and was struck by his praise of President Obama for living out "family values":

Not enough religious conservatives are saying this: It's terribly important that [Obama] gives every indication of being a moral man who is demonstrably fond of his wife and children. I think that's important in a president, be it a Democrat or a Republican. That's why I said I couldn't vote for Giuliani or Gingrich. I think [Obama's] making a real difference in this country in his example as a model father and husband.

You have GOT to be kidding. I thought Land had some discernment!

I’m a Baptist and my family values compared to Obamas as as far about as the east is to the west! I have them, a man who does want his girls burdened with a baby does not have family values.

Do you sometimes get the impression that all large church organizations have been coopted? What is guiding Land’s statements, here?

A very typical instance of false moral equivalence - abortion and infanticide both destroy an innocent, living human being. They are, by their very nature and definition, final, permanent, and irredeemable. The superficial show of “family values” proves nothing - and is nothing, when measured against his character flaws.

This is too hard to believe.

Is it the media misreporting?

What is moral about crushing future generations of our country with debt, confiscating money from earners while giving it to others that didn’t earn it, and taxing businesses into oblivion?

We are in trouble. He may be married and faithful but his rest of his actions are not in synch. What a fool for saying this - what a fool.

Yes, I do, and the ‘seeker sensitive’ (e.g. PC) movement in the church is a big old part of it. Think Bill Hybels, Rick Warren, etc.

Was listening to the White Horse Inn (I think it was them) a few weeks ago and they were reminding us that politicians are not the problem. Evangelical pastors are the problem! How can we be salt and light when we’re fed pablum in church in the interests of growing a ‘crowd’ and being popular?

beats me.

However I'm trying to find a source other than this reporter's blog... did he just make it all up?

So, in the end, will the Catholic Church be the last one standing for moral values????? (that is, those in the church who follow the guidelines?)

Large, centrally organized denominations have turned into Mammon. Maybe they always were. It’s about money, not salvation. Turn to the Bible, and turn to prayer ... not man. That’s the answer.

I think it's really patronizing that people (of any political stripe) make a fuss about how the Obama doesn't cheat on his wife and pays attention to his kids. How low is the bar for good behavior these days?

Well, that didn't take long. How insistent has the Catholic church been, even in the hierarchy? Who voted majority Obama? How many corrupt, immoral, Catholic politicians are still in Communion?

Before you all jump ship on Land, I feel certain that his comments have been totally out of context as I listen regularly and have been in his audience on more than one occasion - he absolutely does NOT believe that Obama is in any way, moral.

He has pointed out many times, Obama's pro-abortion; pro-embryonic stem cell (cloning) "research"; as well as Obama's acceptance of homosexual agenda.

In fact, Land has raised many alarms on the homosexual agenda in America as one that is pulling at our very moral fabric.

Land is convinced that Obama is really anti-America and anti-Constitution.

Where that "reporter" gathered his quote is beyond me but nowhere in Dr. Land's public utterances has he endorsed Obama in any way matter or form.

He may have commented on Obama's apparent devotion to his wife and daughters, in comparison to Gingrich and Guiliani, a fact that we all are very aware of but as to his moral outlook on life, Land is NOT applauding Obama - quite the opposite.

“Do you sometimes get the impression that all large church organizations have been coopted? What is guiding Land’s statements, here?”

Politics. Its required for advancement in any large organization.

Think about what he said and forget the disgust for BO. BO is married and has two kids which he plays at being the dutiful and loving father. Thats all the MSM people see.

They don’t see BO’s support for the culture of death as that is outside their 15 second attention span.
