Notre Dame Newswire ^ | APRIL 27, 2009 | DENNIS BROWN

Posted on 04/27/2009 11:44:33 AM PDT by nickcarraway

The following statement from Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame, is in response to the decision by Mary Ann Glendon to decline acceptance of the University’s Laetare Medal:

“We are, of course, disappointed that Professor Glendon has made this decision. It is our intention to award the Laetare Medal to another deserving recipient, and we will make that announcement as soon as possible.”

How do you explain Sanger’s saying, “The most merciful thing that a large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it”?

Yes, Sanger was in favor of murdering those who were “unfit.”

I'll give Margaret Sanger this much: she abhorred abortion. Can't say the same about Obama.

How about Frances Kissling, who ran an abortion clinic and headed Catholics for a Free Choice for twenty years?

I think Sanger was a bad person, but this particular remark was probably hyperbolic. (I'm not excusing it! I just think it's important to point out to people who lionize Sanger that she was opposed to abortion. That's how bad things are these days: many people who should know better believe it's ok to kill unborn babies, whereas it used to be that even bad people like Sanger knew abortion was wrong.)

You just had a major public slap in the face, Fr. Jenkins. No matter who you announce as a replacement, that won’t change.

The Catholic Church sets a high moral bar, and Jenkins stoops to walk under it.

Why not give it to:

Illegal Abortionist Bertha Bugarin...

About the same as honoring Obama...

Of course Bertha Burgarin may be serving her prison term and may not be available to attend the Commencement Services...

I would think any person who has so served a Christian denomination so as to deserve this award would similarly refuse it.

Wouldn't it be great to see nominee after nominee decline to accept the award?

She did? That's a complete surprise to me.

It would. Of course, they’ll pre-screen the nominees so as to avoid this embarassment.

Some Ted Kennedy clone will get it.

But it will be a “cheap” medal, like winning because the other team forfeited.

I believe Margaret Sanger called abortionists “blood suckers” and believed that abortion ended a life, as opposed to preventing it from coming into existence. I believe also that Planned Parenthood's own brochures used to explain that life began at conception, and that contraception simply would prevent a new life from starting. This last factoid I'm unsure of, and would appreciate freepers help confirming or debunking: I believe there was a split within Planned Parenthood in the sixties about whether abortion was a cause the organization should take up. I think a group within PP was unhappy that promoting birth control slid into promoting abortion.

I disagree. The Catholic Church sets a high moral bar, and Jenkins couldn't see it on a clear day with binoculars.

Maybe if he invited someone who is pro gay marriage, the Bishops wouldn’t object as much.

FWIW, a quick look on wikipedia resulted in this:
In a chapter from Woman and the New Race (1920) entitled "Contraceptives or Abortion?," Sanger wrote, "While there are cases where even the law recognizes an abortion as justifiable if recommended by a physician, I assert that the hundreds of thousands of abortions performed in America each year are a disgrace to civilization."[26]

Roger Streitmatter has claimed that Sanger's opposition to abortion stemmed primarily from a concern for the dangers to the mother rather than moral issues.[27] Nonetheless, in her 1938 autobiography, Sanger notes that her 1916 opposition to abortion was based on the taking of life: "To each group we explained what contraception was; that abortion was the wrong way—no matter how early it was performed it was taking life; that contraception was the better way, the safer way—it took a little time, a little trouble, but was well worth while in the long run, because life had not yet begun."[28]

In a 1916 edition of Family Limitation, Sanger advised women douche with boric acid and to take quinine to prevent implantation. She wrote further, "No one can doubt that there are times when an abortion is justifiable but they will become unnecessary when care is taken to prevent conception. This is the only cure for abortions."[citation needed]
