Hillary Clinton leaves flowers for Our Lady of Guadalupe, asks ‘Who painted it?’

Mexico City, Mexico, Mar 27, 2009 / 04:59 pm (CNA).- During her recent visit to Mexico, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made an unexpected stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and left a bouquet of white flowers “on behalf of the American people,” after asking who painted the famous image.

The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was miraculously imprinted by Mary on the tilma, or cloak, of St. Juan Diego in 1531. The image has numerous unexplainable phenomena, such as the appearance on Mary’s eyes of those present in the room when the tilma was opened and the image’s lack of decay.

Mrs. Clinton was received on Thursday at 8:15 a.m. by the rector of the Basilica, Msgr. Diego Monroy. Msgr. Monroy took Mrs. Clinton to the famous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which had been previously lowered from its usual altar for the occasion. After observing it for a while, Mrs. Clinton asked “who painted it?” to which Msgr. Monroy responded “God!”

I’ve been to Guadalupe and heard the story from a priest in high school. Read alot about it and determined it to be a nice story that was used as propaganda to convert the Indians.

“A lot of people” are not the Secretary of State on an official visit representing our country. Perhaps you don’t know how important the Vigin of Guadalupe is to all of SOuth America, but there is no excuse for the Secretary of State not knowing. The Pope recently desginated her the patroness of all Latin America.

Although Clinton’s staff should have done some homework and briefed her with background on customs and beliefs of places she goes, I had absolutely no idea what “Our Lady of Guadalupe” is either until this post.

No offense but it’s been just an image I’ve seen on the back window of pickup trucks. Now I know what it is and the beliefs some have about the origin.

What a clueless idiot! You’d think “the smartest woman in the world”, who is representing the US as our top diplomat, would at least have read up on something as important to the Mexicans as the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe before visiting it!

That must be a ‘Europeanized’ version of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The original shows Mary looking like an Aztec woman, all the better to help evangelize the native peoples.

Perhaps someone should enlighten her to the fact that not all Americans venerate IDOLS!!!!

If you are referring to American Catholics, we don't venerate idols. We use statues, portraits, pictures, etc. to help us visualize a holy person, or event, which puts us in mind of God, to whom our prayers are ultimately directed.

Yes, this is the replica on the first floor of the Basilica. Hillary didn’t get to see the original tilma which is located in a chamber at the top of the Basilica. It’s a privilege given only to a few. John Paul II being one.

She represents the US and should have done her homework.

Just afterwards, according to El Manana, she said she visited the Basilica in 1979 when the Basilica was being built.

When John McCain visited the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe (if I remember right it was last summer, during his presidential campaign), he knew quite alot about her. He clearly had done his homework, and, according to media reports of the time, he was quite respectful.

I remember also, that many self-described liberals were furious that McCain visited the Basilica, because, after all, he was a Republican-baby-killing-war-monger, who had no right to visit a site revered by the Mexican people.

I wonder if she really did visit the Basilica in 1979 or was it a diversionary tactic after her idiot remark about the tilma? I’m thinking Bosnia.

Not veryone knows about this cloak with Our Lady’s image.IMO, the Secy of State should care enough to learn about the things important to the people of the country she is visiting. This apparition is VERY important to Hispanics. The Virgin thought enough of these humble people to appear to one of their own.
For Hillary to not know about this beautiful story conveys to the people of Mexico that they are unimportant to the U.S. which they suspect anyway.
Going there was beautiful.Knowing nothing about it was stupid.Leaving the flowers honors the Mexican people and is not idolatry.

McCain did his homework and knew that Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the Americas.

The Obama administration is an embarrassment.
