Mexico City, Mexico, Mar 27, 2009 / 04:59 pm (CNA).- During her recent visit to Mexico, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made an unexpected stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and left a bouquet of white flowers “on behalf of the American people,” after asking who painted the famous image.

The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was miraculously imprinted by Mary on the tilma, or cloak, of St. Juan Diego in 1531. The image has numerous unexplainable phenomena, such as the appearance on Mary’s eyes of those present in the room when the tilma was opened and the image’s lack of decay.

Mrs. Clinton was received on Thursday at 8:15 a.m. by the rector of the Basilica, Msgr. Diego Monroy. Msgr. Monroy took Mrs. Clinton to the famous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which had been previously lowered from its usual altar for the occasion. After observing it for a while, Mrs. Clinton asked “who painted it?” to which Msgr. Monroy responded “God!”

The irony - the image that she stands before is commonly regarded as depicting a pregnant Mary. This before she heads off to pick up the Margaret Sanger award!

I don't know how to post a picture here so if anyone would oblige I'd appreciate it.

This administration is HILARIOUS.
I’m impressed the priest had the self control not to say something really, really snarky.

How ignorant can she be? What a jackass.

But I bet she can quote Saul Alinsky.

‘Who painted it?’

I sincerely hope that Hillary meets the artist. Imagine all the good Hillary could do if she switched over to His side for a change. [I know, horrible conflict between her past and His will, but it could happen.]

Goes right along with the so called “reset” button she presented to her Russian counterpart where the word “reset” was misspelled in Russian to read “OVERCHARGE”...

who painted it?

Words fail.

Accepting the Margaret Sanger award that evening.

Is there a second level to words failing?

Alot of people don’t know anything about Our Lady of Guadalupe. May Hillary’s experience with Our Lady bless her, heal her heart, and turn it from sin.

The most corrupt Administration in history is also proving itself the most incompetent. It took Bush at least 6 years to prove himself an idiot. Obama has managed to do the same already with breath-taking speed.

Foreign born Prez. Tax cheat as Treasury Sec. A corrupt, China-owned Sec of State. Unqualified Homeland Security Dept head. And a fish out of water for CIA boss. Plus multiple others who are crooks, lobbyests, terrorist affliated, and/or have many conflicts of interest...other than looting the public till and enslaving the masses.

Could someone post the specifics of how the image came to be? [I.e.: was the tilma being worn at the time the image appeared? Did it happen overnight, or in the daylight, etc.] Thank you.

That pretty much sums up the last 9 years.

Alot of people don’t know anything about Our Lady of Guadalupe

Here's a reasoned look at the legend (excerpt):

Mexico's Image of Guadalupe is a sixteenth-century depiction of the Virgin Mary that, according to pious legend, she imprinted miraculously on an Aztec convert's cloak. The Indian, Juan Diego, is expected to be canonized as a saint, although new evidence confirms skeptics' claims that the image is merely a native artist's painting, the tale apocryphal, and "Juan Diego" probably fictitious.

The story of Juan Diego is related in the Nican Mopohua ("an account") written in the native Aztec language and sometimes called the "gospel of Guadalupe." According to this account, in early December of 1531 (some ten years after Cortez's defeat of the Aztec Empire) Juan Diego was a recent convert who supposedly left his village to attend Mass in another. As he passed the foot of a hill named Tepeyac he encountered a young girl, radiant in golden mist, who identified herself as "the ever-virgin Holy Mary, mother of the true God" and asked that a temple be built on the site. Later, as a sign to a skeptical bishop, she caused her self- portrait to appear miraculously on Juan's cactus-fiber cloak.

The legend obviously contains a number of motifs from the Old and New Testament as well as statements of specific Catholic dogma. Indeed, the tale itself appears to have been borrowed from an earlier Spanish legend in which the Virgin appeared to a shepherd and led him to discover a statue of her along a river known as Guadalupe ("hidden channel"). Moreover, the resulting shrine at Tepeyac was in front of the site where the Aztecs had had a temple for their own virgin goddess Tonantzin (Smith 1983). Thus the Catholic tradition was grafted onto the Indian one, a process folklorists call syncretism.

I was sortof hoping Hillary would have attempted to blend in with the Mexicana Catholic culture by strapping a cross to her back and dragging it a couple of miles down the Boulevarde.

The other irony: the sky behind Mary is filled with incomplete images of babies.

The Secretary of State is supposed to do her homework about the countries and cultures she visits. This is what lead to the botched gift choices.
