TEC’s first Buddhist bishop? (Anglican Open)
Sydney Anglican ^

It was good to hear some encouraging news from the Church of England, reported by Robert last week.

However, little good seems to come from the The Episcopal Church (TEC) in USA.

The Church of England Newspaper (27 February 2009) reported that the Anglican Communion’s first Anglican-Buddhist bishop was recently elected at a special convention of the Diocese of Northern Michigan.

Concerns had been raised about the suitability of a professed Buddhist who said he had received Buddhist “lay ordination” and was “walking the path of Christianity and Zen Buddhism together” as well as the fact that he was the only candidate on the ballot paper. However, when it came down to the vote, the Rev Kevin Thew Forrester received the support of 88 percent of the delegates and 91 percent of congregations. Mr Forrester is also known by his Buddhist name, “Genpo” which means “Way of Universal Wisdom”. The newspaper also noted the bishop-elect’s non traditional views, evidenced by the diocese’s newsletter where he stated: “Sin has little, if anything, to do with being bad. It has everything to do, as far as I can tell, with being blind to our own goodness.”

Kevin Forrester’s election needs to be confirmed by a majority of standing committees and bishops in the TEC before he can be consecrated. It will be an interesting test for the TEC. Will they stand for the uniqueness of Christ? Will they recognise that Buddhism and biblical Christianity are mutually exclusive?

And some "The Episcopal Church" (TEC) in USA wonder why many of us traditional Anglicans have left the church. Luckily, there is a movement of traditional Anglicans starting new churches all over the country.

So how is TEC any different than the Unitarian/Universalists?

All they need to catch up to the UU is some ordained witches.

That is pretty much how I see it. It is pretty sad that it has to be this way, but the African Anglican church has started a mission here to try to bring back the traditional, conservative Anglican church. (The Anglican Mission in the Americas)

I have repeatedly said that the TEC abbreviation for the Episcopal Church actually means “Trashing Everything Christian”.

Well, congratulations Genpo! Perhaps with your universal wisdom you can divine the reason that the Anglican Church has become more or less irrelevant to England and why there will soon be more practicing Muslims there than Anglicans.

In my neck of the woods the difference between the UU and TEC is that the TEC typically is less numerous but has much more valuable real estate. At this point there is not much difference doctrinally.

We’ve added three in our diocese this year, all in Oregon.

Although the Church of England has her own problems, the rampant apostasy, heresy and errors of the Episcopal Church in America for outstrip the weakness(es) of the English Church. It surely does appear that the TEC’s lampstand is going out.

You're a day behind the fair . . . .

Episcopal priest leaves for Druids.

He changed his mind later - figured out he'd lose his pension. His wife, who actually wrote the Druidic "liturgies", continues as rector of her congregation, which is apparently more "tolerant" than her husband's.

As Kipling said, "Curse Nature! She gets ahead of you every time!"

People need to be careful about how they parody the Episcopalians. According to Johnson's Law, it WILL come true.
