In a letter dated September 29, 2008, Chad Hardy, producer of the infamous Men on a Mission Calendars and website, received a letter from Brigham Young University informing him that his name had been removed from the August 15, 2008 graduation roll. The letter stated that he would not be awarded his BA degree in Communication Studies because he had been excommunicated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on July 13, 2008, a month before graduation.
All of his required coursework had already been completed prior to the church discipline. He was not required to abide by the schools strict Honor Code because he finished his coursework online from his home in Las Vegas, NM. The only recourse given to him to get his diploma was to come back to full fellowship with the LDS Church.
Brigham Young University failed to follow their own policies and procedures in disciplining Hardy and revoking his degree. Two weeks later, Hardy was denied and exception from BYU policy and will not be awarded his degree.
This series of videos is the actual recording from the official University Review with BYU Dean of Students, Vernon Heperi.
I think that coming up with these 'supports' of his is a bit of a stretch.
HE was describing how the GAYS felt about them.
Once again:
Which part did he FAIL to live up to?
There’s no such thing as BAD publicity...
“Did they spell the NAME of our CHURCH right?”
The tapes make it clear that BYU rescinded Mr. Chad Hardy's degree because the LSD church had excommunicated him. The BYU Dean of Students, Mr. Vernon Heperi made that abundantly clear on the tape.
The reason the LSD church excommunicated is indicated in the Email Correspondence from Hardy's Stake President Mr. Frank Davie.
Neither the LSD nor BYU has made any accusation that Mr. Hardy "got involved in whatever 'lifestyle' issues". However, it appears to me that many Mormons are overeager to point the finger at homosexual behavior.
I take it he didn’t show up for his excommunication.
Come on. Look at his youtube “presentation,” with its attacks on the church for its stand against gay marriage. If people think he is gay, it is because he wants them to think he is gay. He has an agenda.
In fact, he enrolled in those online classes at BYU after he had already become a very public critic and enemy of the church. This whole BYU diploma thing is a setup.
Well...
The Kinderhook Plates thing was a setup...
...and the Book of Abraham thing was a setup. There are some more...
À tout à l'heure.
I just thought it was a calendar with some really cute fellows.
Devils in the details in legal matters, and in the end it may not be up to either party involved to determine the outcome.
I think, and this is just from my own personal knowledge of other such cases at other schools, that a deal will be made. This could effect more than just BYU.
I can’t see the clips, so if he has then good on him, my thoughts are this must not be turned into a show or he is playing into the LDS hands, that is their gig...
That is going to be the very point opposing council is going to hit right there.
Put your lawyer cap on LL, go back to the training you did in litigation classes the ones where they made you take the other side of a case in order to better build your own.
Why did BYU wait until AFTER he had finished to drop the axe when they already had knowledge he should have been gone while he still had hours remaining.
They are going to tear at that, BYU took his money and wasted his time, yada yada, yada...
BTW for once we are on the same side more or less. This could be a bad precedent for all Faith based schools, something I have personal and finical interest in. However BYU did kinda back into this in a not so straightforward way. The timing is bad, they should have moved much quicker. I bet if you were their council you'd be thinking the same thing, “why the wait, why did you let him back in to even finish much less finish”.
Is there any group you will NOT affiliate yourselves with in your quest to “expose” the Mormons?
Huh?
That makes no sense...
What new group has come into play here, looks the same two teams to me..
And therein lies the problem. All you see is an opportunity to criticize. It doesn’t matter where the info comes from or if it is even valid. And any contradictory info is declared to be “unclear.” The Left does this and we rightly protest this as unfair so why is it OK for you to do the same?
Ok, you got me because I have know idea what you mean.
In both principle and reality I agree with BYU's right to have a code and enforce it. Many intuitions have such a moral code including a couple I have been or am currently affiliated with.
There have been numerous cases I am sure where the code of BYU has been enforced quickly and directly and in a timely manner. Here, in this instance, there is a reasonable call to question certain elements of this case.
I will state unequivocally and for the record for all to see that Chad Hardy's actions do indeed violate the BYU code of conduct. There is no question in that.
The question is how it was done, it's timing and possible ramifications in the academic sense mainly do to factors beyond BYU's full control, those being licensing and accreditation as well as legal issues in the public court system.
This is not Mormon bashing, if a Methodist College had done the same thing (and they have) it too would be “problematic” in several key areas and I would also question those even of my own faith who would claim a “slam dunk” for the Church.
You claimed wishful thinking earlier, well it can cut both ways, and does until the gavel is dropped that last time, if it goes that far.
Tone the sensitivity down a notch or two and do something new for a change, actually read the post made, even by us so called “antis”, you may learn something new, and be surprised that it is not all “attack”...
Of course I explained why I disagree with it...
+++++++
Now you are teaching that it is problematic for a school to hold a student to his word, to his contract.
You must also be saying, by the definition of what you have said, that it is not problematic for a person to lie, cheat, and steal.
Praising lack of honer can only be called praising lack of honer, and you are saying that honer is of no value.
++++++++
This is where some folks want you to look and they want you not to know about the problems he had with the code of conduce he agreed to when he accepted his stewardship as a student at BYU.
These folks seem to want you to have their hole conclusion based on the partial facts they are willing to share.
Ask them if they know the rest of what he did not honer in the Honer Code, or if they are they just choosing not to find out any more, so they can be truthful when they say they do not know?
