Is the Bible God's Word? (Do you believe the Bible is the only word of God?)

THE CATHOLIC BIBLE

Holding the "Douay" Roman Catholic Version of the Bible aloft in my hand, I ask, "Do YOU accept THIS Bible as the Word of God?" For reasons best known to themselves, the Catholic Truth Society have published their Version of the Bible in a very short, stumpy form. This Version is a very odd proportion of the numerous Versions in the market today. The Christian questioner is taken aback. "What Bible is that?" he asks. "Why, I thought you said that there was only ONE Bible!" I remind him. "Y-e-s," he murmurs hesitantly, "but what Version is that?" "Why, would that make any difference?" I enquire. Of course it does, and the professional preacher knows that it does. He is only bluffing with his "ONE Bible" claim.

The Roman Catholic Bible was published at Rheims in 1582, from Jerome's Latin Vulgate and reproduced at Douay in 1609. As such the RCV (Roman Catholic Version) is the oldest Version that one can still buy today. Despite its antiquity, the whole of the Protestant world, including the "cults"* condemn the RCV because it contains seven extra "books" which they contemptuously refer to as the "apocrypha" i.e. of DOUBTFUL AUTHORITY. Notwithstanding the dire warning contained in the Apocalypse, which is the last book in the RCV (renamed as "Revelation" by the Protestants), it is "revealed":

". . . If any man shall add to these things (or delete) God shall add unto him the plagues written in this Book." (Revelation 22:18-19)

But who cares! They do not really believe! The Protestants have bravely expunged seven whole books from their Book of God! The outcasts are:

The Book of Judith
The Book of Tobias
The Book of Baruch
The Buck of Esther, etc.
* This disparaging title is given by the orthodox to Jehovah's Witnesses, the Seventh Day Adventists and a thousand other sects and denominations with whom they do not see eye to eye.

I could only assume it was taken as attacking the poster.

Don't assume. It's a form of mind-reading.

It would be nice if the MOD would always explain the reasons for their action - but they don't have to.

"Your church and its elders regard what happened in the Garden of Eden as “The Wise choice”, and you’ll pardon me for thinking that Eve made anything BUT a wise choice.

It was Sin, plain and simple - for which Adam and Eve were cast out of the garden, and for which all mankind has suffered consequences ever since."

Some quotes from their own documents:

*Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy (11 Nephi 2:25).

*Adam deliberately and wisely chose (to touch the forbidden tree) and partook of the fruit (Talmage, DC, p. 65)

*Adam cried, "Because of my transgression my eyes are opened, and in this life I shall have joy" (Pearl of Great Price, Moses 5:10-11)

*We ought to consider the fall of our first parents as one of the great steps to external exaltation and happiness. (Mormon Catechism)

*We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression. (Articles of Faith, 2)

What church do you belong to?

I do believe that you must belong to one of those churches that J. Smith said was "apostate".

Yes, it would be nice to have a pm from them, wouldn’t it? It was the first time that a post of mine to a thread has ever been pulled.

Unfortunately, modern religions like to ignore the parts of scripture that they don't agree with....if a passage corrects their doctrine they refuse to acknowledge it.

Yeah... we've noticed!

TRUTH IGNORED

Smith, Young, Taylor, Pratt, Snow, Kimball, Woodruff ...

 1 Timothy 3:2-3
 2.  Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
 3.  not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

1 Timothy 3:12
A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well.

 Titus 1:6
An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient.

BEHOLD!!!!  The Restorative Power  of the Book of Mormon!!

THE BOOK OF JACOB
THE BROTHER OF NEPHI
CHAPTER 2

24 Behold, David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord.
25 Wherefore, thus saith the Lord, I have led this people forth out of the land of Jerusalem, by the power of mine arm, that I might raise up unto me a righteous branch from the fruit of the loins of Joseph.
26 Wherefore, I the Lord God will not suffer that this people shall do like unto them of old.
  27 Wherefore, my brethren, hear me, and hearken to the word of the Lord: For there shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none;
28 For I, the Lord God, delight in the chastity of women. And whoredoms are an abomination before me; thus saith the Lord of Hosts.
29 Wherefore, this people shall keep my commandments, saith the Lord of Hosts, or cursed be the land for their sakes.
30 For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things.
31 For behold, I, the Lord, have seen the sorrow, and heard the mourning of the daughters of my people in the land of Jerusalem, yea, and in all the lands of my people, because of the wickedness and abominations of their husbands.
32 And I will not suffer, saith the Lord of Hosts, that the cries of the fair daughters of this people, which I have led out of the land of Jerusalem, shall come up unto me against the men of my people, saith the Lord of Hosts.

You have to have met Christ's conditions in order to be saved.

And here they are:

John 6:28-29
John 6:28-30 28. Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"
29. Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

John saw in vision the judgment and he saw that ever person is judged by their works.

Oh??

Not according to the Book!

Here are the verse from Revelation that point to the names ALREADY being in the book of LIFE...

Revelation 13:8
All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast--all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.

Revelation 17:8
The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because he once was, now is not, and yet will come.

Revelation 20:12-15
 12.  And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.
 13.  The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done.
 14.  Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.
 15.  If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:27
Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.

And THESE show that your name IS written there BEFORE you show up for judgement!

Luke 10:20
However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

John 20:31
But these are written that you may  believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Hebrews 12:22-24
 22.  But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly,
 23.  to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect,
 24.  to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

Would you similarly dismiss Christianity on the basis of its number of offshoots?

But it's MORMONism that makes the claim of having RESTORED the gospel.

Such a TRUE church should have NO splits!

Nineveh repented and God saved the city, nullifying Jonah's GOD's prophecy #1.

He wasn't 'happy' because he WANTED the Ninevites zapped!#2

#1. Jonah 3:2 "Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you."

#2. Jonah 4
1. But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry.
2. He prayed to the LORD, "O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.

An interesting read as well is the Book of Enoch which is quoted in the Book of Jude in the Bible as a prophetic source.

An interesting FACT is that LDS Headquarters, based in SLC, has not said that this is SCRIPTURE.

But, then again, neither is the JOSEPH SMITH TRANSLATION - the thing the Prophet spent a LOT of time on - listening to the LORD tell him what to add to the KJV.

This has been dealt with before on FR, and refuted, and I will not go one in another thread, suffice to say that Mormonism and R. Catholicism have critical similarities, which are make them closer to each other than to evangelicals.

Not to start a war, but there are some 'catholics' on these threads that support Mormons 'conservative work, and never seem to have a BAD word about the LDS theology.

But I've yet to see a MORMON say that the Catholic way will get a person to heaven.

As I said before, modern religionists ignore major issues. You defend the indefensible. I'm sure you've heard of the contention with infant baptism? It used to be capitol offense, as in they burned you at the stake, for not accepting the doctrine of infant baptism.

I think another poster already questioned you on why you were equating the religious persecutions of the 15th and 16th centuries to "modern religionists"...that's who you consider as "modern"?

Also you totally ignore the contexts of those religious persecutions of those previous centuries.

It didn't take much, it seems, for folks then to be threatened by new faith movements. Even before the Anabaptists were persecuted...
...so were others during the Spanish Inquisition (almost 300 burned in 1481)...
...4 Lutherans were burned at the stake in Antwerp in 1523...

...And even as the Anabaptists were persecuted between 1524 and early 1570s...
...Thomas More, the homosexual religious anti-Lutheran chancelor, had six Lutherans burned circa 1525...
...three Lutherans were burned @ Lyons in 1540...
...14 more Lutherans were burned @ the stake in Seville in 1559...
...in the 1550s, Queen Mary burned 300+ Lutherans as heretics (just like Henry VIII had persecuted Lutherans)

The early Anabaptist persecutions in the mid-1520s were initiated by the Jesuit-driven (and royal power) Hapsburgers and Catholics...and Luther and then Lutheran leader Melancthon joined in re: encouraging peasant wars vs. the Anabaptists (most of the Anabaptists were of the peasant class) in 1528 and 1530, respectively.

Were these multi-directional religious-based persecutions outrageous and wrong? (Of course they were!)

But would you mind telling us how they would differ, say, than the Mormon persecutions of the Fancher party travelling thru Utah in 1857 -- the original American 9/11 terrorist act?

It seems in all of these cases, unfounded religious-based suspicions caused people to panic and suppress -- by way of mass murder -- those who they saw as a threat. None of it was justified...and I don't know anybody who goes around justifying these kinds of persecutions.

It is also not correct to contend that my meaning was “No” prophecies” ever made by Smith came to pass I argue “No prophecies of consequence...” and I stand one hundred percent by that.

Here's some PROPHECY:

THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
SECTION 132

51–57, Emma Smith is counseled (commanded) to be faithful and true; 58–66, Laws governing the plurality of wives are set forth.

51 Verily, I say unto you: A commandment I give unto mine handmaid, Emma Smith, your wife, whom I have given unto you, that she stay herself and partake not of that which I commanded you to offer unto her; for I did it, saith the Lord, to aprove you all, as I did Abraham, and that I might require an offering at your hand, by covenant and sacrifice.
52 And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith, areceive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph, and who are virtuous and pure before me; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Lord God.
53 For I am the Lord thy God, and ye shall obey my voice; and I give unto my servant Joseph that he shall be made ruler over many things; for he hath been afaithful over a few things, and from henceforth I will strengthen him.
54 And I command mine handmaid, Emma Smith, to abide and acleave unto my servant Joseph, and to none else. But if she will not abide this commandment she shall be bdestroyed, saith the Lord; for I am the Lord thy God, and will destroy her if she abide not in my law.
55 But if she will not abide this commandment, then shall my servant Joseph do all things for her, even as he hath said; and I will bless him and multiply him and give unto him an ahundredfold in this world, of fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, houses and lands, wives and children, and crowns of beternal lives in the eternal worlds.
56 And again, verily I say, let mine handmaid aforgive my servant Joseph his trespasses; and then shall she be forgiven her trespasses, wherein she has trespassed against me; and I, the Lord thy God, will bless her, and multiply her, and make her heart to brejoice

Whatever HAPPENED to Emma???

Eliza was a devout Mormon. At age 38, she became Joseph Smith's 14th plural wife (in addition to Smith's lawful wife, Emma). In 1842, after learning Eliza was pregnant, Emma Smith beat Eliza with a broomstick and knocked her down a flight of stairs, causing Eliza to miscarry Smith's baby.

Wow!!

I guess ol' Emma got VAPORIZED by GOD!!!

We know that multiply him thing sure didn't work out!

"a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents"

I think this brings home the point nicely and bears repeating! God was also willing to relent in the case of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah when Abraham bargained with the Lord.

Excellent question and one I don’t know the answer to offhand. I believe the Lord has the ability to see into our hearts and know whether we were following in good faith or from some other baser motive. If there is anything of which I’m sure, it is that the Savior will administer perfect justice and overlay it with mercy by His grace. Not one of us will be able to say, “that’s not fair”. We, especially those of us living now in comfortable circumstances surrounded by resources at our disposal, will be held to a standard of seeking out the truth, wherever it lies and regardless of traditions, family connections, and background. Therefore, I have an obligation to seek the Lord until I find Him in my life and to follow His promptings to truth.
