Prayers for Father Neuhaus

Please pray for Father Richard John Neuhaus, who is quite ill. This note went out yesterday to his friends and associates:

Fr. Neuhaus is in the hospital here in New York. Over Thanksgiving, he was diagnosed with a serious cancer. The long-term prognosis for this particular cancer is not good, but it is not hopeless, either, and there is a possibility that it will respond to the recommended out-patient chemotherapy.

Unfortunately, over Christmas, he was taken dangerously ill with what seems to be a systemic infection that has left him very weak. Entering the hospital the day after Christmas, he was sedated to lower an elevated heart rate and treatment was begun for the infection. Over the last few days, he has shown some signs of improvement, and there is a reasonable expectation that he will recover from this present illness--sufficiently, we hope, that he will be able to begin the chemotherapy for the cancer.

Fr. Neuhaus is not able at the moment to receive visitors or speak on the telephone or answer his mail, and he has requested that no flowers, candy, or other get-well presents be sent--just your prayers for his quick recovery. Further bulletins will be sent when there is news to report.

Please share this email with anyone you think would be interested. May we all have a blessed New Year.

Please do remember him in your prayers.

I have learned so much from him. Good Lord, Gracious Father, I’ve seen miracles. My second cousin’s daughter, age 4, is now, officially leukemia free. To me that is amazing. Please heal Fr. Neuhaus. We need him, too.

Thanks so much for the information.

Many prayers for Fr. Neuhaus... I love this man.

His book 'As I lay dying' is a very personal meditation about his near death (a few years ago) and his thoughts/prayers during that process. It was very beautiful.

Fr. Neuhaus is a good man. He was America’s foremost Lutheran theologian, pastor, and scholar before he converted to Catholicism. May Our Lady of Lourdes be at his side and heal him of this illness.

He has my prayers. Years ago I met him when Neuhaus was a Lutheran pastor in NYC. The priest who taught my theology class at Fordham sent a few of us to meet him in our study of western Christian liturgies. Later, I was not surprised at his conversion. During our visit he explained the Catholic belief of transubstantiation in a way no Catholic clergyman I had ever met had been able to do. God bless and protect him.

Amen! Once upon a time I was a Commonweal Catholic. That is before John Cogley, ther editor, defected to the Episcopal Church/ So I defected from it. by canceling my subscription. Now I am a “First Things” Catholic and feel a special bond with Fr. Neuhaus, because he comes to us by way of the Lutheran Church. A most powerful intellect. Would that he stay with us as long as Cardinal Dulles did. We need him. But God’s will be done.
