Mary Worship Still Alive in Catholicism

Mary Worship Still Alive in Catholicism

10/21/2008 - Tur8infan Benedict XVI is reported (link to report) as recently praying to Mary: "We implore you to have pity today on the nations that have gone astray, on all Europe, on the whole world, that they might repent and return to your heart," the text of the prayer reads.

This is a prayer that is openly idolatrous. Mankind needs to turn, not to the heart of Mary, but to the Son of Mary, Jesus Christ the Righteous. The true and proper object of worship is God alone.

Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Benedict XVI is also reported as praying to her, "If you will not help us because we are ungrateful and unworthy children of your protection, we will not know to whom to turn."

This prayer demonstrates the underlying blindness of Catholicism. There is a place to which not only all of Europe in general, but Mr. Ratzinger in particular ought to turn for help, and whose protection should be sought: the throne of the Most High God, by the intercession of the Son of God, Jesus Christ with the aid of the Holy Spirit.

But though Jesus is the Son of Mary, and though Mary is greatly blessed to be the Mother of our Saviour, yet Jesus himself said:

Matthew 12:48-50
48But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? 49And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 50For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

And again:

Mary 3:33-35
33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? 34And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.

It is almost as though Jesus was concerned lest some might foolishly fall into the trap of worshiping his blood relatives! Indeed, here is Jesus' own condemnation of the error of adoration and veneration of Jesus' mother. They do not hold a special place in the kingdom of God, but are like all those who do the will of God. Yet Catholicism, as can be seen from this event, continues to elevate Mary improperly to the status of, in effect, a goddess to whom prayers are offered.

Benedict XVI did not even omit to provide a sacrifice to this de facto goddess. It is reported that, "In a gesture of filial love, the Pope then offered the Madonna a golden rose." One is reminded immediately of the similar offerings presented by the Philistines to the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament, particularly given Catholicism's claim (or at least the claim of her apologists) that Mary is the "ark of the New Covenant."

Finally, we should note that Benedict XVI is reported not to have left Jesus entirely out: "...The secret of Pompeii is the rosary: "This prayer leads us through Mary to Jesus." But, in fact, the Rosary leads men away from Jesus, as can be seen in the idolatry illustrated in the prayers above. Benedict XVI is reported to have claimed, "The rosary is a spiritual weapon in the struggle against evil, against all violence, for peace in hearts, in families, in society and in the world."

But, in fact, sadly it is an extra-Scriptural innovation: unknown to the apostles and unpracticed for centuries and centuries following Christ's ascension. The Early Church Fathers didn't say the Rosary, and neither should you: it is a tradition of men, not of God.

The creator of the universe and salvation can not be found in the Pagan traditions of man as found in the Roman church founded at Nicea by Constantine the Roman Pontiff, who called it into being, managed it and promulgated it's findings.

Whatever you say, chief, but I'd appreciate it if you'd stop changing the subject.

I'm talking about the Catholic Church, founded by Christ circa AD 32.

“Then many more translations get it wrong than get it right. “

And you got the absolute, only correct translation from......? God himself? Or from other men?

Yes. Through His Church.

I have admitted that she found favor with God. But she was STILL a mere mortal being who died for her sins. Just like everyone else.

Remember, David was a man after God’s own heart but he still screwed up and sinned badly on a regular basis.

For reference, I think it would be a good idea to read the actual prayer these excerpts came from. It seems as it’s the prayer below, even though it apparently has the name of “Supplication to the Madonna of Pompeii”, and not “Supplication of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary”. (I believe)

A brief note though, about the man who wrote the prayer, would, I think, be also interesting and informative. This devotion was started by Bl. Bartolo Longo, who had once been a Satanist “priest”. He converted, did penance, and became a lay Dominican. In 1872, Longo, a lawyer, went to Pompeii see to the affairs of Countess Marianna Farnararo De Fusco. He started there a Confraternity of the Rosary. They obtained a picture of the Blessed Virgin from a monastery, which before that was in a second hand store, before which they could recite the Rosary every day. It showed Mary with Sts. Dominic and Catherine of Siena. In 1875 Longo received permission to build a church. Miracles were reported and pilgrimages began. The picture has been restored several times since then. Longo also saw tot he building of complex for works of mercy with orphans and prisoners. Pope John Paul II beatified Bartolo Longo in 1980. Some of his writings form the basis of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary.

Source of above and of the prayer below: http://wdtprs.com/blog/2008/05/8-may-indulgence-supplication-to-ol-of-pompeii-at-1200h-2/

The prayer:

PETITION TO OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY OF POMPEII

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

I.
O august Queen of victories, Virgin who reignest in paradise, whose mighty name causes heaven to rejoice and hell to tremble, o glorious Queen of the most holy Rosary, we, thy happy children chosen by thy goodness in this century to build thee a temple at Pompeii, kneeling at thy feet on this solemn day to commemorate thy latest triumphs on the spot where idols and demons were formerly worshipped, we pour out with tears the feelings of our hearts and with a filial confidence lay before thee our miseries.

From that throne of mercy where thou sittest as Queen, o Mary, turn down thy pitiful eyes on us, on our families, on Italy, on Europe, and the whole Church; take into pity the afflictions which overwhelm us and the cares which embitter our life. Thou seest, o Mother, how many dangers of soul and body, how many calamities and afflictions press upon us.

O Mother, keep back the arm of justice of thy indignant Son, and conquer by thy mercy the hearts of sinners, since they are our brethren and thy children, redeemed through the blood of our sweet Jesus and through the wounds of thy most tender heart pierced with the sword. Show thyself to all in this day, as thou art, the Queen of peace and mercy.

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy,...
- Vouchsafe that I may praise thee, o sacred Virgin.
- Give me strength against thy enemies.
- Pray for us, Queen of the most holy Rosary,
- That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

II.
It is but too true that we, although thy children, are the first who crucify Jesus in our hearts and wound anew thy heart by our sins. We confess it, we deserve the severest chastisements; yet remember how thou didst receive, on the top of Golgotha, the last drops of that divine blood, and the testament of our dying Redeemer. And this testament of a God, sealed with the blood of a Man-God, appointed thee our Mother, the Mother of sinners. Thus, as our Mother, thou art our Advocate and our Hope. To thee, amidst sighs, do we lift up our hands, crying for mercy!

Have pity, good mother, have pity on us, on our souls, on our families, on our relations, on our friends, on our departed brethren, above all, on our enemies, and on so many who claim the name of Christians, yet wound the loving heart of thy Son. Pity, o Mother, we now implore thee for pity on the erring nations, on all Europe, on the whole world, that they may repair repentant to thy heart. Be merciful to all, o Mother of mercy.

III.
What does it cost thee, o Mary, to hear us? What does it cost thee to save us? Did not Jesus entrust to thy hands all the treasures of his graces and mercies? Thou sittest as Queen at the right hand of thy Son, crowned with immortal glory, above all the choirs of angels. Thou extendest thy dominion as far as the heavens expand, the earth and all the creatures that people it are subject to thee. Thy power even reaches hell; and thou alone, o Mary, canst rescue us from the devil’s grasp. Thou art almighty by grace, and therefore thou canst save us. Now if you sayest thou wilIest not help us because we are ungrateful children and unworthy of thy protection, tell us at least to whom shall we have recourse in order to be released from so many evils? Oh! No, thy maternal heart will never bear to see the ruin of thy children. The divine Child we behold on thy knees, the mystical crown we admire in thy hand, both inspire us with hope that we will be heard. And full of confidence in thee, we throw ourselves at thy feet, we trust ourselves as feeble children into the arms of the tenderest amongst mothers and today, this very day, we expect from thee the graces we are longing for.

Let us ask Mary for her blessing

We now ask of thee, o Queen, a last favor which thou canst not refuse on this solemn day. Grant to all of us thy constant love and in a special manner thy maternal blessing. No, we will not leave thy feet today nor cease clasping thy knees till thou hast blessed us. Bless now, o Mary, the sovereign Pontiff: to the first laurels of thy crown, to the ancient trophies of the Rosary, whence thou art called Queen of victories, add also this one, o Mother, grant triumph to religion and peace to mankind. Bless our bishop, the priests and particularly those who promote the honor of thy Sanctuary; bless finally all those who are associated to thy new temple of Pompeii and who practice and spread devotion to thy most holy rosary .

O blessed rosary of Mary, sweet chain which unites us to God, bond of love, which connects us with the angels, tower of safety against the assaults of hell, sure harbor in the universal shipwreck, never more shall we part with thee; thou shall be our comfort in the hour of agony: to thee the last kiss of our life; and the last word of our dying lips shall be thy sweet name, o Queen of the Rosary of Valle di Pompei. Mother dear, only refuge of sinners, supreme comforter of the afflicted, blessed be thy name, now and forever, on earth and in heaven. Amen.

I think it’s worth noting that this devotional prayer to Mary, like many many other devotional prayers that are often cited out of context by anti-Catholics, ultimately have a central focus on Christ. This is clear in that it, like all Catholic prayers, start and end “in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit” and also particularly here, the final request of the prayer itself is that Mary “pray for us” so that we “may be made worthy of the promises of Christ”.

Thus, the point of the prayer is clear: It is begging Mary to “come to our aid” in the way it’s always understood that she helps us, by praying to her Son on our behalf. There is absolutely nothing “idolatrous” about that, or else it’s “idolatrous” every time we have a prayer thread on FR.

So how is THAT bible more accurate than others? Because the Catholic church says so? Are you in a place to judge the hearts and souls of the men who first translated and approved any of them? No, you are not and neither is any other person.

Personally, when I study the bible, I get SEVERAL interpretations and study them all and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what meaning I am to get from it.

And if there is any bitterness and hatred coming through, it is from the Catholics who deride others for not being just like them. I’m through with this thread. I have tried to open the eyes of my brothers and sisters in Christ and merely warn them of the dangers of elevating Mary to the status of God yet I have been soundly rejected.

May some of the words I have written open your hearts.

Funny how protestants always have a problem with that statement but have no qualms at all with: Protestant Church, founded by Martin Luther circa AD 1517.

Yes.

No, God is. Christ sent the Holy Spirit to protect the Catholic Church from error, just as He promised.

What is being rejected is the false premise of your mission.

Elevating Mary--or anyone else--to the status of God is strictly prohibited by the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is a mortal sin.

This thread amounts to a ginormous strawman calumny against the Catholic Church.

It’s interesting that you should complain about (misperceived) Catholic practices regarding Mary and their alleged deficiencies in understanding the nature of the Eternal Logos, for the benefit of an FR audience that is overwhelmingly Trinitarian, when you are not even a Trinitarian yourself. Or so one can infer, when you were given numerous chances to affirm that you believe in the classic understanding of the Trinity, and continually dodged the question. So I ask you again, are you a Trinitarian, acknowledging the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as co-eternal and co-equal, one God in three divine Persons, or not?

My understanding is that it is a “tradition” of the Roman Catholic Church, not dogma, that prayers to Mary are always received and submitted to Christ. No one believes Mary is God or that Mary is co-mesiah with Jesus. The tradition began in the very early church before Mary's demise at approximately 66 years of age. She lived a long time after her son's death. Many who came to know Christ through John, also came to know Mary, as she made her home with him. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to see that those who came to believe on Christ wanted as much information about him as they could get. It's a hunger that is never satiated in believers. I'm certain she was a gracious and loving woman to all who came to know her. I'm certain she prayed devoutly for those who asked her to do so.

We all pray (or at least I did as a Protestant and now as a Catholic) with all the saints in Heaven in a “collective” hymn of praise (i.e the Doxology). Mary, in just about everyone’s estimation, is deserving of sainthood. I certainly have no way of knowing how it all comes together, but that we will all be together someday and that we are all the “Bride of Christ” whether living or asleep in Christ is not something I will dispute.

Anyone who prays to Mary expecting her to grant their petition, is praying amiss. Anyone who tells her how much they love her and appreciate her sacrifice for her Son who sacrificed Himself for us is praying a prayer of adoration through her “yes to God” for God, Himself. You can't praise me without honoring my mother and father and so on.

Additionally, many traditions the Protestant Church continues to revere, like Christmas and Easter, are as far off as praying to receive from Mary. Before you take the splinter out of your brother's eye, make certain you remove the log from your own. You can see so much more clearly then.

Passover, Pentecost, Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, First Fruits — those are the recognized holidays of our Savior and our First Pope. St. Paul had a rough sell with Christmas and Easter, but they were all devout Jews, and, yes, there are Jewish traditions, too.

It seems like some RCs think Yah'shua (Jesus) did not exist before He look on the garment of earthly flesh to present Himself to the humans in the world.

Name some.

There are some RCs who worship Mary, because if Mary had not given birth to Jesus(Yah'shua), G-d would not exist as she is the mother of G-d.

Name some.

Before you start slinging mud can you let us know if you believe in the one, true God of Christianity - the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who are the one God in three persons?

If anyone with a brain takes the time to really learn Roman Catholic theology, he would quickly see the nonsense of the protestant attacks on Catholicism. There is no theology in the Christian world as intellectually sound as Roman Catholic theology.

BTTT!
