Vatican approves new English translation for Mass

Vatican, Jul. 25, 2008 (CWNews.com) - The Vatican has given formal approval to a new English translation of the central prayers of the Mass for use in the United States.

In a June 23 letter of Bishop Arthur Serratelli, the chairman of the US bishops' liturgy committee, the Congregation for Divine Worship announces its recognitio for the translation, which had already won the approval of the US bishops' conference, despite strong protests from some liberal prelates.

The new translation adheres more closely to the Latin of the Roman Missal. Since the 2001 publication of Liturgiam Authenticam, the instruction on the proper translation of liturgical texts, the Vatican has pressed for more faithful translations of the official Latin texts.

Alluding gently to the fierce debates over English-language liturgical translations in the past decade, the Congregation for Divine Worship reports "no little satisfaction in arriving at this juncture." The letter from the Vatican is signed by Cardinal Francis Arinze and Archbishop Albert Malcom Ranjith, the prefect and secretary, respectively, of the Congregation.

The Vatican's binding approval covers only a portion of the entire Roman Missal. The entire process of translating the Roman Missal is expected to take at least until 2010. However, the prayers given the Vatican recognitio are the most common texts for the Order of the Mass.

The Vatican approval comes just after the US bishops' conference voted against approval of another installment in the series of translations that will be required to complete the overall project.

The new translation is not to be used immediately, the Vatican letter indicates. Instead the US bishops are directed to begin "pastoral preparation" for the changes in the language of the Mass. During this same period, the Congregation for Divine Worship notes, some musical settings for the text could be prepared.

Among the noteworthy changes that Catholics will notice when the new translation goes into effect are:

- At the Consecration, the priest will refer to Christ's blood which is "poured out for you and for many"-- an accurate translation of pro multis-- rather than "for all" in the current translation.

- In the Nicene Creed the opening word, Credo, will be correctly translated as "I believe" rather than "we believe."

- When the priest says, "The Lord be with you," the faithful respond, "And with your spirit," rather than simply, "And also with you."

- In the Eucharistic prayer, references to the Church will use the pronouns "she" and "her" rather than "it."

- In the Agnus Dei, the text cites the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world," rather than using the singular word "sin."

- In the preferred form of the penitential rite, the faithful will acknowledge that they have sinned "through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault."

Throughout the translation of the Offertory and Eucharistic Prayer, the traditional phrases of supplication are restored, and the Church is identified as "holy"-- in each case, matching the Latin original of the Roman Missal.

while I’m brushing up on my “Church Latin” over here...

“tired of holding hands, kids eating during Mass & people showing up dressed like they’re going to the beach.”

Found a new parish where the Catholics act like and dress like real Catholics are supposed to!

Hopefully it will also exchange:

"Lord I am not worthy that you should come under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed"

in place of:

"Lord I am not worthy to receive you but only say the word and I shall be healed."

The original Latin is more Scriptural, more personal and more immediate.

and before I get off my “soap box”
I'm also tired to having “Eucharistic ministers” distributing Holy Communion!

If it takes an extra 15-20 minutes for the PRIEST to distribute the Body of Christ; then so be it...the restaurant Sunday brunches will still be serving by the time everyone gets there and the beaches will have not disappeared!

We live in the DFW Metroplex but went to Albuquerque to visit my sister a few weeks ago. We went to Mass at one of the many Catholic Churches there and at the end when we picked up a bulletin there was a refreshing letter inside it from the Bishop of the Archdiocese chastising parishioners for the same thing you are talking about. We have the same thing at our church here in Dallas. It all comes down to respect and people seem to be losing it for anything.

like real Catholics are supposed to

Peasant robes, shepard's tunic, fisherman- (not beach) wear? St. Francis observed the same problems a long time ago.

parden the flamebait but dress at church was not a big deal to the founders, IIRC. Now disrespectful garb or offensive/suggestive dress is a choice and I see your point.

yea, well I've written the pastor of my parish and
since the clowns are still showing up like they're going to the beach, I'm going to start going to Mass elsewhere.
I told my pastor that I had a neighbor who is a non-Catholic that I wanted to bring to Mass but I was too embarrassed by the get-ups that people were showing up at Mass to bring that person.

and they wonder why attendance has dropped off...

Are they changing “Deo Gratias” back to “Have a nice day!”?

As though the American Catholic Church differs from the Roman Catholic Church.

Reverse the modernist trend, get back to basics and recognize the fact that Vatican II was inspired by satan.

I'm with you on that one. I just wrote an email to our Priest also about the talking before Mass and during--these modern Catholics have no respect and probably don't even recognize or understand that the Blessed Sacrament is present.

Well what goes on during Mass these days is embarrassing, disrespectful and bordering on sacrilegious! On more than one occasion, I’ve had to tell a man to take off his BASEBALL CAP of all things! And if I were a non-Catholic attending Mass and seeing what goes on and how people dress & act;
I wouldn’t be coming back!

Another thing that happens regularly during the homily, is that people get up and walk out of the Church, then come back in. I am assuming they are going to the restroom or perhaps forgot to bring in their snack so they have to go to their car to get something to eat before they starve to death. It's so disgusting! They certainly would have a problem of fasting until they went to communion-like we used to have to!

Well I haven't noticed people leaving during the homily.

But talking about people receiving Holy Communion,
Father Corapi was speaking on EWTN one Sunday night about the numbers of people receiving Holy Communion while very few were going to Confession on Saturdays...strange...I guess we have more “saints” amongst us than we thought. LOL

LOL! My Priest brought that up in the announcements recently. Told people to get to Church early enough to use the restrooms before Mass, and not during Mass.

The American Catholic Church is a heretical/morally relativist/inclusive/progressive sect in no way affiliated with the Holy See. You meant the Catholic Church in America.
