Bush to meet with LDS leadersPresident Bush chatted for nearly an hour Thursday with LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson about issues including U.S. foreign policy, Middle East peace, the economy and energy, according to White House press secretary Dana Perino.

The Mormon leader also mentioned his long-standing friendship with Bush's parents, Perino said.

The meeting at Monson's office in the LDS Church Administration Building in downtown Salt Lake City began around 8:30 a.m. At about 9:40 a.m., Bush's motorcade emerged from underground parking on North Temple and headed straight for the airport.

The courtesy call was Bush's first meeting with Monson and his two counselors, Henry B. Eyring and Dieter President Bush waves as he disembarks Marine One Thursday in Salt Lake City for a meeting with Mormon church leaders. The president visited Utah for two fundraisers Wednesday on behalf of Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. (Douglas C. Pizac/The Associated Press)F. Uchtdorf, since they were installed in February after the death of President Gordon B. Hinckley.

Monson, who was first counselor to Hinckley in the governing First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was present during 2005 and 2006 meetings between Bush and Mormon leaders. In 2002, Monson joined Hinckley in greeting Bush before he attended the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympic Games.

On Wednesday, Monson, Uchtdorf and Julie B. Beck, general president of the church's women's Relief Society, got a personal tour of Air Force One. "He meets with [the First Presidency] regularly and thinks that they have a good role to play in America, in terms of spreading the word of love," Perino said Wednesday. "I don't think the president would ever pass up an opportunity to meet with the president of the Mormon church." pstack@sltrib.com

The handshake is sacred in Mormonism.

How would you know? Are you saying Bush is a secret Mormon?

I learned those handshakes called tokens when I attended the LDS Temple in the 1970’s.

I wonder WHY it is that Bush would know them since they are so sacred to Mormons that they make an oath never to reveal them, and what on EARTH he is doing exchanging the “Sure Sign of the Nail,” with the man who calls himself a “Prophet.”

If you don’t wonder why, it is a curious thing.

I wonder how I'm going to pay my bills and keep my head above water with $4 per gallon gas and idiots in congress legislating it higher. I wonder how we're going to get information before the next terrorist attack with the morons in charge of government oversight more worried about the rights of terrorists than the safety of Americans. I wonder if we will survive as a country when every candidate running for president is promising amnesty to any third world invader who can sneak over our porus borders.

In the sum of things to worry about, a handshake between the president of the U.S.A. and the president of the Mormon Church, one of the most conservative voting demographics in the country, does not concern me one iota. Why should it?

Why should it?

I guess you already answered that question. The concerns of heaven far outweigh these insignificant earthly worries. I suppose it is simply a matter of priorities.

You cannot serve two masters.

Sevenbak are you sure you want to keep praising this newbie?

Wow, always the conspiracist. Go back and read the thread. I never addressed him. I believe it was the other way around. Where do you get your ideas?

As far as his beliefs in witchcraft, that is obviously outside the doctrine and acceptance of the Church. Witchcraft is the OPPOSITE of the true power of God, given to man through the Holy Priesthood.

These opposites have been in conflict in times past, as they will again, I'm sure.

A couple examples come to mind. The Priests of Pharaoh who used the power of their gods to duplicate the power of Moses' rod. The Priests of Baal in a "power contest" with Elijah. We all know which God won, in both cases, that of the True and Living God, giving his power to man through the priesthood.

What you need to understand, and apparently Frank as well, is this verse from the Book of Mormon.

2 Nephi 2:11

11 For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, my first-born in the wilderness, righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility.
