I'm joining the Catholic Church next month. Advice/Books/Etc.?

Posted on 05/28/2008 6:05:04 PM PDT by Ultra Sonic 007

Hello fellow Freepers. I believe this is my first post on the Religion forum.

Over the past week or so, I put some thought into something I've been pondering for a while; my spiritual welfare. As it was, I had been part of the 'Sola Scriptua' school of thought (Evangelical Christian). By the Bible and only the Bible. Sounded good enough.

Well...what about before the Bible was put into word? It stuck in my head when reading an article earlier on FR concerning a deconstruction of Sola Scriptura and its inherent weaknesses as a foundation for one's faith.

This, combined with a genuine lack of churchgoing (as a family, we've been uncertain about going to various churches, given that top-down problems with Episcopal/Methodist/etc. churches and their increasing liberalization are a genuine problem for one's spiritual welfare), compelled me to make a decision.

I don't know if my family will follow me, persay, but I'm going to go ahead and take the plunge.

Next month, I'm going to the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle near my home, and I'm joining the Roman Catholic Church.

As is, I have a few volumes of the Magnificat pamphlet and the Catechism of the Catholic Church to read.

Any other pointers from other Catholic Freepers?

This is the second person I've seen you recruit for the Catholic Church.

You're right, Hacksaw. My faith in The Church became so much more stronger after reading all the silly accusations against it -- each time I read something silly, I referred to the Bible, to the Catechism, to the newadvent and other Church websites and I found my answers to the silly points.

I think both Doc Eck and Xena are doing sterling work for the Catholic Church by their insinuations, which, if anyone researches, (s)he would find out more about the glory that is Christ's Church.

Good job, Doc Eck, Xenia -- you bring more true believers to Christ's Church. Good show!!

I'm still not sure why you're overstating a relatively minor issue.

I'll tell you why--because that's all they've got.

......US7, DrEck’s post is pretty devastating. In it she lists posts that go back to 2005 through 2007 that show you behaving in a Roman Catholic manner.

...This is the funniest thing I have seen in a long time and I give you Kudos for answering it with grace. I may have just pointed and laughed.

LOL - that is pretty funny!

You know something is truly wrong with the religion forum when a Memorial Day thread to honor those who served and have died defending our nation ends up with eight posts:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-religion/2021394/posts

While a post by a FReeper asking for support on his spiritual journey turns into another opportunity to disparage the faith he has decided to pursue with over 1,000 posts.

What does that say about us as Christians?

You know I can get into as much as anyone on these threads, but you can sign me disappointed.

What's good to remember is that most of the bile here comes from the same small handful of people. There is an evangelical radio station in my city, and the people on there are nothing like the Cromwell crowd here.

You're boring.

LOL. That's the nicest thing a Catholic has said to me in weeks.

post 934: "Peter states in his own writings that he went to Babylon."

You do realise that that was:
1. Code for Rome as Rome was the capital of the Emprie that was ruling the Jews and Peter didn't really want to bring the wrath of the Roman Empire down on the Church as yet?
2. That the city of Babylon which had persecuted the Jews 600 years earlier was now a mass of rubble, after having been devastated by the Persians?

Doc Eck's statement somehow seems to insinuate that the Pope's tendency to kiss the soil and kiss a gift is the same as the Pope making a religious proclamation is such an astonishing bit of sheer intentional misdirection, it take's one's breath away.

It's been awhile since I've seen a RC defend JPII's loss of sanity and grace which he displayed when he willfully kissed the Koran, gift or not.

If someone "gifted" you with a Taliban rifle that had the blood of an American soldier on it, would you kiss it?

Okay, I may not be able to profess innocence but I'll cop to uncomprehension. What was wrong with my lte lamented #1127. I'm unclear on how/whether to respond to the issue and was saying that you had said it was cooked and done and we should move on.

Religionis Moderator locutus = The Moderator of Religion has spoken,
Causa finita = case closed.

As it is we seem currently in the position of referring to points made in a deleted post but having to do so covertly. I'm done with the topic anyway, but I was pingolated.

This thread really should have been labeled “caucus.”

As an “open” thread it is automatically subject to every form of debate. And when the title itself asks for “Advice/books/etc.”, then it’s clear that opinions are being solicited.

However, if only POSITIVE comments are being solicited, then it should not be an “open” thread.

How about it Religion Mod or US7, why not ask that this be changed to what it rightfully should be, a “caucus” thread.

I think you are correct concerning the thread designation, but on the other hand just because a thread is an open thread it does not mean that one is required to bash what the thread author’s subject is about.
