Why so many LDS threads?
08-May-2008 | Grig

Posted on 05/08/2008 5:04:47 PM PDT by Grig

I am posting this on behalf of many LDS freepers. They will post their own 'signature' to this in the comments below. --- Some of you have noticed lately a lot of LDS (ie: Mormon) threads here on FR. I'm going to tell you why.

For many years there have been several active LDS freepers here. We post to all the forums on relevant issues, and were happy to have a site where conservative values were so openly welcomed.

Those conservative values include faith in God, and freedom of religion. We fully respect the rights of all posters to express their opinions and views on religious matters, even when people choose to use those rights to express criticism of our own faith. We also support the ideas embodied in FR rules against religion bashing. There is no need for hostility and there should be no room for bigotry on FR. Every religion has it's miracles and mysteries. Every faith has things in it that are not or can not be proven, and things that run contrary to what secular science would have us believe. Someone mature and confident in their own faith generally doesn't feel the need to belittle the faith of others.

We have, to the best of our ability, conducted ourselves with civility and dignity. We do not feel that that respect has been returned by some posters (putting it mildly).

When Mormon missionaries were murdered, the moderators were kept busy pulling jubilant posts off the thread. When Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her home, we contended for months with posters who appeared to be motivated by religious bigotry doing all they could to smear the family and accuse the father. Several posters openly admitted their religious motivation in opposing Mitt Romney and confessed that no matter how conservative any Mormon was, they would never vote for one for President of the USA. When the Pope died, I don't think any Mormon poster posted anything unkind, yet the thread about the passing of our President recently needed many comments removed.

Nearly every thread having any connection with Mormons, or Utah winds up being hijacked by anti-Mormon activists who copy and paste the same false accusations over and over even when it has been clearly and factually pointed out to them on multiple occasions that they are bearing false witness against our faith. Everything possible is done by these activists to make FR a hostile place for Mormons, and for at least some of them, bashing Mormonism is all they do here. Their most recent project is trying to blur the fact that the polygamous FLDS is a separate and distinct religion from ours, just as Lutherans are a separate and distinct religion from Catholicism.

In our opinion, such poster do a great disservice to FR and to their fellow freepers by spreading disinformation and promoting hostility towards a people known for walking the walk of conservative values.

Why the moderators here don't see the behavior of these anti-Mormon activists as religion bashing is a mystery to us, but it is the moderators call to make and we respect their right to do so. That doesn't mean we have to be passive however. We have all spent many hours refuting the accusations leveled at our faith, but these wind up buried deep in a flood of comments, effectively shouting us down.

Recently some of us have decided to take a more proactive approach. Rather than try to wrestle the pig into taking a bath, we are just going to hose it down. We will actively define our faith here rather than just respond to accusations.

So expect to see lots of Mormon threads, now and for as long as we see fit to keep posting them (although probably not as many as there are Catholic threads). They will be about our basic doctrines and responses to common accusations. If you want to know what our faith is about, read the articles we post. We will post them as open threads and I encourage you to compare the difference in tone and spirit between what we post and what our critics say.

I Said: "Flat Earth" has been a part of this debate for some time, a term that was brought in by Godzilla, not me. It is not a personal attack, go back and read the thread. U Said: SO sorry I didn't make clear what is so personal about your post:

Nothing about my post was personal, that's why it was hard to make a non existent thing "clear".
<
I Said: "I have observed you constantly engage in arguments which are circular, you bounce from any topic you are not "winning on" to a new topic (that's how we got so many topics in one post...) and you suddenly become the grammar police if that's all you've got. (A flat earth tactic If ever there was one)

U Said: I have observed that there IS a difference between saying "in my opinion",(1. A belief or conclusion held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof) and "I have observed" (... (1. To be or become aware of, especially through careful and directed attention; notice.)

Interesting definition, got a link?

My definition for "I have observed" is that it is a highly subjective in that two people can see the same event (say a retelling of Joseph Smith's vision) and observe completely different things, it's like an opinion, have a nice day (again a subjective measure)

I Said: Just a little note for your future reference.

In my opinion, flat earth is not personal.

That's nice, thanks for the info.

Um, Emma did not object tot he Polygamy while Joseph was alive, or he could not have practiced it. Yes, she was commanded, and she obeyed, maybe you should look up the Story of Jonah.

Ya just have problems with this line of reasoning in that it also invalidates the Bible (IMHO also the word of God), oops.

I Quoted: “I told Stephen Markham that if I and Hyrum were ever taken again we should be massacred, or I was not a prophet of God.”

U Said: And so..

The false prophet Joseph Smith was so proud and arrogant..

That he committed suicide by policeman..

Y’OK..

Now THAT makes sense...

ROTFLOL!

There are so many things wrong with this "Scenario" you are proposing:
  1. Joseph was planning to die just to prove he was a prophet? (kind of a one way thing you know?)
  2. If he's a grifter as the term goes this is a singularly bad plan. (you can't profit from this irrevocable move)
  3. Suicide By Cop would be resisting arrest, Joseph didn't.
  4. The police have a responsibility to protect prisoners.
  5. The mob that murdered Joseph Smith in cold blood intended to do just that, they said so after he was incarcerated.
  6. The mob that took the Carthage jail thought they were attacking unarmed men, yet they had guns aplenty and were firing long before fire was returned.
  7. The mob propped Joseph up against the well outside the building and continued to shoot him, (these are not the actions of people who would not shoot an unarmed man.)
IMHO your statement betrays much...

My brother, it’s called an agenda. Not a search for the truth, or even a defense of what one believes is the truth in a reasoned manner, just an agenda. An Anti one as you know. I wonder if the cabal realizes just how silly they can look. Pot meet kettle comes to mind. A shame really.

I know, But The more silly things they say (this thread is an excellent example) the more likely a lurker is to want to see what all the fuss is about and Put our religion to "The Test" by Getting a Book of Mormon, and reading it, and performing the the Test contained in The Bible.

I have had Freepers FM me and thank me for leading them to the truth through this very method, I believe there are many more, but it does not matter, even if I save but one soul, it'll have been worth it.

LOL!

I like the letter "P" and I like consonance, My post meant people who like to argue keep protesting the priesthood so they can argue. (pugnacious people are argumentative people.)

Thanks for proving my point, I knew someone would bite.

BTW, watch the potty language, I had a poster call me on Barbara Streisand earlier...

I’m not LDS - but I admire the work they do and that they take care of those in their religion. I can’t say that about most of the Christians I know.

At least you've shown that LDS ain't Christian.

I want to put your Organizations Temple Rites® to 'the TEST' - to see if THEY are right by GOD.

Please post them for me.

Or just point me to the place they are found in your Scriptures or Standard Works.

The easiest way to find out about what we do is to look at the anchient church:

A number of early Jewish and Christian documents deal with elements found in modern LDS temples. As such, they are confirmation of the antiquity of our temple rites.1 The volume of information is such that it will not be possible to discuss all aspects in this brief paper. In addition to some of the articles I have written, I would refer you to the temple research written by such LDS researchers as Hugh Nibley, John M. Lundquist, Donald W. Parry, Stephen D. Ricks, and Matthew B. Brown.

Just as an example, let me note that I have, to date, found fifteen early Christian documents that speak of baptism for the dead, along with several Mandaean and Jewish texts. This information will be included in my article "Baptism for the Dead in Early Christianity," scheduled for publication later this year in another FARMS temples volume.
From Early Christian and Jewish Rituals Related to Temple Practices at Fair.

Even a Cursory study of Documents from the Correct eras (when the Jews had a temple) reveals that they had rites that were performed and these rites were not recorded in the Bible. (sound familiar?) The Masons got their rites by observing from the walls of the temple while working on it.

Do you deny that the Jews had rites that were performed at the temple that were not written down in the Bible?

We are again consistent with the early church.
