Why so many LDS threads?
08-May-2008 | Grig

Posted on 05/08/2008 5:04:47 PM PDT by Grig

I am posting this on behalf of many LDS freepers. They will post their own 'signature' to this in the comments below. --- Some of you have noticed lately a lot of LDS (ie: Mormon) threads here on FR. I'm going to tell you why.

For many years there have been several active LDS freepers here. We post to all the forums on relevant issues, and were happy to have a site where conservative values were so openly welcomed.

Those conservative values include faith in God, and freedom of religion. We fully respect the rights of all posters to express their opinions and views on religious matters, even when people choose to use those rights to express criticism of our own faith. We also support the ideas embodied in FR rules against religion bashing. There is no need for hostility and there should be no room for bigotry on FR. Every religion has it's miracles and mysteries. Every faith has things in it that are not or can not be proven, and things that run contrary to what secular science would have us believe. Someone mature and confident in their own faith generally doesn't feel the need to belittle the faith of others.

We have, to the best of our ability, conducted ourselves with civility and dignity. We do not feel that that respect has been returned by some posters (putting it mildly).

When Mormon missionaries were murdered, the moderators were kept busy pulling jubilant posts off the thread. When Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her home, we contended for months with posters who appeared to be motivated by religious bigotry doing all they could to smear the family and accuse the father. Several posters openly admitted their religious motivation in opposing Mitt Romney and confessed that no matter how conservative any Mormon was, they would never vote for one for President of the USA. When the Pope died, I don't think any Mormon poster posted anything unkind, yet the thread about the passing of our President recently needed many comments removed.

Nearly every thread having any connection with Mormons, or Utah winds up being hijacked by anti-Mormon activists who copy and paste the same false accusations over and over even when it has been clearly and factually pointed out to them on multiple occasions that they are bearing false witness against our faith. Everything possible is done by these activists to make FR a hostile place for Mormons, and for at least some of them, bashing Mormonism is all they do here. Their most recent project is trying to blur the fact that the polygamous FLDS is a separate and distinct religion from ours, just as Lutherans are a separate and distinct religion from Catholicism.

In our opinion, such poster do a great disservice to FR and to their fellow freepers by spreading disinformation and promoting hostility towards a people known for walking the walk of conservative values.

Why the moderators here don't see the behavior of these anti-Mormon activists as religion bashing is a mystery to us, but it is the moderators call to make and we respect their right to do so. That doesn't mean we have to be passive however. We have all spent many hours refuting the accusations leveled at our faith, but these wind up buried deep in a flood of comments, effectively shouting us down.

Recently some of us have decided to take a more proactive approach. Rather than try to wrestle the pig into taking a bath, we are just going to hose it down. We will actively define our faith here rather than just respond to accusations.

So expect to see lots of Mormon threads, now and for as long as we see fit to keep posting them (although probably not as many as there are Catholic threads). They will be about our basic doctrines and responses to common accusations. If you want to know what our faith is about, read the articles we post. We will post them as open threads and I encourage you to compare the difference in tone and spirit between what we post and what our critics say.

So you agree that The old testament prophets did not get their work peer reviewed before publishing? Great that means that asking for a peer review of anything claiming to be inspired is not a valid. (Thanks!)

So glad you are happy..

Ever heard of prophecies being fulfilled ???

Every prophecy in the Bible about the birth, death and resurection of Jesus has been fulfilled..

That is how a prophecy is proven..

Now just how many of the prophecies of the false prophet Joseph Smith have come to pass ???

Quakers living on the moon... Nope

All the Gentiles destroyed in the Civil War...Nope..

Joseph Smith becomes POTUS in 1844...Nope

None of Joe’s followers would ever leave him.. Nope..cause they did..

Gonna be greater than Jesus ..Nope..

Emma would bed destroyed if she didnt agree with Joe cheatin’ on her regular like..Nope, she hated the idea, lived till a good old age..

Governor Boggs would die..Nope he survived miraculously (Joe did his best to make this one come true..)

And so on..

The “it shall come to pas” always comes to pass for a REAL prophet of God..every time..

REAL prophets are careful over the word of God and only say what God tells them to say..

The false prophets like Joseph Smith are puffed up egomaniacal jerks who could care less about God..

They think they are better than God..like Jose did..

And God destroys them..just as He did Joe..

U Said: Jesus was not a prophet..
Although the Moslems say He is...

The Bible says he is... Matt. 21: 11
And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.

John 6: 14
Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

you are as usual mistaken, Jesus was not just a prophet, he is the type that all other prophets are but a shadow of.

U Said: Jesus has no peer...

A broken clock is also right twice a day...

U Said: The false prophet Joseph Smith peered into peep stones till his eyes hurt conning people out of their hard earned cash, but he was not a peer of Jesus.

Joseph smith indeed is indeed not a peer of Jesus, he is however, a humble servant, and a prophet of God. U Said: Jesus is God...

Amen! (second time...)

U Said: Who would tell God He was wrong ???

Certainly not me, that's why I believed God when He told me Joseph smith was his prophet.

U Said: Who would need to ????

You apparently do, or want me to for you, I will however just tell you what God told me, The Book of Mormon is God's word. Jesus Christ is my savior who lived and Died for me in Jerusalem.

U Said: God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? Numbers 23:19

You however, are not God...

A word of advice, your opinion stated as fact is not convincing anyone, an invitation to pray however convinces those who take it and receive an answer, as I have.

From our back and forth so far, I have observed you constantly engage in arguments which are circular, you bounce from any topic you are not "winning on" to a new topic (that's how we got so many topics in one post...) and you suddenly become the grammar police if that's all you've got. (A flat earth tactic If ever there was one)

A "making it personal tactic if ever there was one." C'mon DU.

That why I said...

Remember when Jesus said that He would say...

Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Matthew 7:22, 23

I said: your creed was an abomination, it's not in the Bible. Nowhere in the KJV can you find the word "Trinity".

U said: The word AUTOMOBILE is not in the Bible; but I'll bet you drive one.

That's fine, I'm not insisting that Automobiles are an eternal truth approved of by God.
I said: Go ahead and deny that I am saying the Nicene creed is an abomination because it contradicts the Bible, you;ll just look silly

U said: You can 'say' all you want.

You HAVEN'T proved it and your continued attempts to 'say' it instead of PROVE it is SILLY (and sad).

It's not in there, and you don't believe in Moder day prophets so the Bible cannot be added to by God, thus "adding", "Changing", "Clarifying" or "consolodating" and their synonyms all run afoul of Gal. 1: 8-9
8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any bother gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
The Trinity is not in the Bible, by your definitions there are no valid means of adding to scripture, therefore those who preach the Trinity are accursed.

Do you know what Hoist by your own petard means?

U Said: Ever heard of prophecies being fulfilled ???

Why yes... Joseph Smith in his journal is an entry from Saturday, June 22, 1844 "I told Stephen Markham that if I and Hyrum were ever taken again we should be massacred, or I was not a prophet of God." Shortly thereafter he and Hyrum were placed in Carthage Jail and then murdered by a mob. Others who were with them survived the attack, but Joseph and his brother were killed, as predicted.

Some of the Fulfilled Prophecies of Joseph Smith

U Said: Every prophecy in the Bible about the birth, death and resurection of Jesus has been fulfilled..

That is how a prophecy is proven..

Is it?, What about the Unfulfilled prophecies in the Bible? (This is a Muslim site, but their approach is similar to anti Mormons, so I decided to use it goggle unfulfilled prophecies and Bible if you want the same info from another site...) Then, there is a little matter of how many "Christan" churches have made unfulfilled prophecies, An incomplete list... Now just how many of the prophecies of the false prophet Joseph Smith have come to pass ??? Many, but not all some have yet to come to pass, just like many of the prophecies of John.

U Said: Quakers living on the moon... Nope

Not a prophecy, Idle conversation reported more than thirty years after Joseph's death by one person...

U Said: All the Gentiles destroyed in the Civil War...Nope..

Civil war prophesied, but not the destruction of all gentiles in it.

U Said: Joseph Smith becomes POTUS in 1844...Nope

Not a prophesy, a Candidacy.

U Said: None of Joe’s followers would ever leave him.. Nope..cause they did..

Not a prophecy, he did however prophesy that the church would last until Jesus returned in his glory, so far so good

U Said: Gonna be greater than Jesus ..Nope..

LOL! Joseph never said he was greater than Jesus, he did say this incarnation of the church would last longer than Jesus' did.

U Said: Emma would bed destroyed if she didnt agree with Joe cheatin’ on her regular like..Nope, she hated the idea, lived till a good old age..

No such prophecy exists, Joseph did however prophesy that she needed to accept the Doctrine of Polygamy, which she did.

U Said: Governor Boggs would die..Nope he survived miraculously (Joe did his best to make this one come true..)

LOL! IF Joseph Smith had wanted to murder Gov. Boggs, all he would have had to do is tell porter Rockwell, and that would have been the end of it. I for one am sure I know a bit more about Gov Boggs than you do, I have said before on this forum that While my parents are Converts, we are also Distantly related to Bruce R McConkie, but I am a descendant of Gov Boggs (with on link in Genealogy that my mom refuses to allow us to do until she has passed.) Gov. Boggs was assumed by many to have been shot by Porter Rockwell, but when asked, he came as close as he ever did to denying anything "He's still alive, Aint he?" Porter was known for being a dead shot, he would not have missed.

Here is an entry from Nathaniel Leavitt, Jr. - Autobigraphy
He then commenced to prophesy in the name of the Lord. He said Governor Boggs should be struck dumb so that he could not speak a word and that many of the mobacrats who had driven the Saints from the state of Missouri should die a fearful death and their bones should bleach upon the plains and that the wolves should gnaw them. He then spoke of the government of the United States. He said that wickedness and abomination lurks in high places and great calamities would come to the nations.

He said the north and south would be divided against each other and that a bloody war would be the result, that many thousands would be slain on both sides and that this would commence in South Carolina.

I noted down all these predictions at the time and have lived to see them all fulfilled to the very letter. Governor Boggs was shot by some unknown person. The ball took effect in his mouth which rendered him unable to speak a word. When I crossed the plains in 1850, it was the bones of a great many Missourian mobacrats that were bleaching on the plains with wolves gnawing them. They died a fearful death of Cholera. In relation to the war between the north and the south; all are too well acquainted with the facts to need any comment. Suffice to say that the war took place as predicted. The first gun was fired at Fort Sumter in South Carolina.
Prophecies fulfilled...

U Said: And so on..

And so forth... So?

U Said: The “it shall come to pas” always comes to pass for a REAL prophet of God..every time..

Every time, in the Lords due time, unless like Jonah, God decides to change his mind ...

U Said: REAL prophets are careful over the word of God and only say what God tells them to say..

When speaking for the Lord, no prophet should be dismissed because he orders something the kitchen is out of for breakfast...

U Said: The false prophets like Joseph Smith are puffed up egomaniacal jerks who could care less about God..

The same could be said of some poster on this forum...

U Said: They think they are better than God..like Jose did..

Joseph didn't think that... Can you read the minds of dead men? How do you know what he thought? Why testify of God if you don't believe in him?

U Said: And God destroys them..just as He did Joe..

All the Apostles died (according to the Catholic church), so they were all condemned by God to die as punishment? That's an interesting take, I disagree, I think all men Die, even Jesus died, I think it's what makes us human...

You have thrown up a bunch of unsubstantiated untrue accusations with no links, no support, I have given links and supported my statements, as usual.

Funny, you were there when God told me? I don't think so!

The fact of the matter is you are trying to find a way to deny God's testimony to me of Joseph at and at the same time Not deny God's testimony to me Of Jesus, you can't. That's why God set it up that way in the Bible.

My answer specifically meets with John's definition of an answer from God, You Don't even try to match it, you are not a true messenger of God.

"Flat Earth" has been a part of this debate for some time, a term that was brought in by Godzilla, not me. It is not a personal attack, go back and read the thread.

BTW, I didn't see you complaining when Godzilla started calling me fluffy and posting pictures of the puppy, Why?

My brother, it’s called an agenda. Not a search for the truth, or even a defense of what one believes is the truth in a reasoned manner, just an agenda. An Anti one as you know. I wonder if the cabal realizes just how silly they can look. Pot meet kettle comes to mind. A shame really.

Some of the Fulfilled Prophecies of Joseph Smith

Ha ha ha!!

THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
SECTION 132

51–57, Emma Smith is counseled (commanded) to be faithful and true; 58–66, Laws governing the plurality of wives are set forth.

51 Verily, I say unto you: A commandment I give unto mine handmaid, Emma Smith, your wife, whom I have given unto you, that she stay herself and partake not of that which I commanded you to offer unto her; for I did it, saith the Lord, to aprove you all, as I did Abraham, and that I might require an offering at your hand, by covenant and sacrifice.
52 And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith, areceive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph, and who are virtuous and pure before me; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Lord God.
53 For I am the Lord thy God, and ye shall obey my voice; and I give unto my servant Joseph that he shall be made ruler over many things; for he hath been afaithful over a few things, and from henceforth I will strengthen him.
54 And I command mine handmaid, Emma Smith, to abide and acleave unto my servant Joseph, and to none else. But if she will not abide this commandment she shall be bdestroyed, saith the Lord; for I am the Lord thy God, and will destroy her if she abide not in my law.
55 But if she will not abide this commandment, then shall my servant Joseph do all things for her, even as he hath said; and I will bless him and multiply him and give unto him an ahundredfold in this world, of fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, houses and lands, wives and children, and crowns of beternal lives in the eternal worlds.
56 And again, verily I say, let mine handmaid aforgive my servant Joseph his trespasses; and then shall she be forgiven her trespasses, wherein she has trespassed against me; and I, the Lord thy God, will bless her, and multiply her, and make her heart to brejoice

Whatever HAPPENED to Emma???

Eliza was a devout Mormon. At age 38, she became Joseph Smith's 14th plural wife (in addition to Smith's lawful wife, Emma). In 1842, after learning Eliza was pregnant, Emma Smith beat Eliza with a broomstick and knocked her down a flight of stairs, causing Eliza to miscarry Smith's baby.

Wow!!

I guess ol' Emma got VAPORIZED by GOD!!!

We know that multiply him thing sure didn't work out!

I wonder if the cabal realizes just how silly they can look. Pot meet kettle comes to mind. A shame really.

THE FIRST BOOK OF NEPHI
HIS REIGN AND MINISTRY
CHAPTER 14

An angel tells Nephi of the blessings and cursings to fall upon the Gentiles—There are only two churches: the Church of the Lamb of God and the church of the devil—The saints of God in all nations are persecuted by the great and abominable church—The apostle John shall write concerning the end of the world. Between 600 and 592 B.C.

1 And it shall come to pass, that if the Gentiles shall hearken unto the Lamb of God in that day that he shall manifest himself unto them in word, and also in power, in very deed, unto the taking away of their stumbling blocks—
2 And harden not their hearts against the Lamb of God, they shall be numbered among the seed of thy father; yea, they shall be numbered among the house of Israel; and they shall be a blessed people upon the promised land forever; they shall be no more brought down into captivity; and the house of Israel shall no more be confounded.
3 And that great pit, which hath been digged for them by that great and abominable church, which was founded by the devil and his children, that he might lead away the souls of men down to hell—yea, that great pit which hath been digged for the destruction of men shall be filled by those who digged it, unto their utter destruction, saith the Lamb of God; not the destruction of the soul, save it be the casting of it into that hell which hath no end.
4 For behold, this is according to the captivity of the devil, and also according to the justice of God, upon all those who will work wickedness and abomination before him.
5 And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me, Nephi, saying: Thou hast beheld that if the Gentiles repent it shall be well with them; and thou also knowest concerning the covenants of the Lord unto the house of Israel; and thou also hast heard that whoso repented not must perish.
6 Therefore, woe be unto the Gentiles if it so be that they harden their hearts against the Lamb of God.
7 For the time cometh, saith the Lamb of God, that I will work a great and a marvelous work among the children of men; a work which shall be everlasting, either on the one hand or on the other—either to the convincing of them unto peace and life eternal, or unto the deliverance of them to the hardness of their hearts and the blindness of their minds unto their being brought down into captivity, and also into destruction, both temporally and spiritually, according to the captivity of the devil, of which I have spoken.
8 And it came to pass that when the angel had spoken these words, he said unto me: Rememberest thou the covenants of the Father unto the house of Israel? I said unto him, Yea.
9 And it came to pass that he said unto me: Look, and behold that great and abominable church, which is the mother of abominations, whose founder is the devil.
10 And he said unto me: Behold there are save two churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of God, and the other is the church of the devil; wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth.
11 And it came to pass that I looked and beheld the whore of all the earth, and she sat upon many waters; and she had dominion over ball the earth, among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people.
12 And it came to pass that I beheld the church of the Lamb of God, and its numbers were few, because of the wickedness and abominations of the whore who sat upon many waters; nevertheless, I beheld that the church of the Lamb, who were the saints of God, were also upon ball the face of the earth; and their dominions upon the face of the earth were small, because of the wickedness of the great whore whom I saw.
13 And it came to pass that I beheld that the great mother of abominations did gather together multitudes upon the face of all the earth, among all the nations of the Gentiles, to fight against the Lamb of God.
14 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the power of the Lamb of God, that it descended upon the saints of the church of the Lamb, and upon the covenant people of the Lord, who were scattered upon all the face of the earth; and they were armed with righteousness and with the power of God in great glory.
15 And it came to pass that I beheld that the wrath of God was poured out upon that great and abominable church, insomuch that there were wars and rumors of wars among all the nations and kindreds of the earth.
16 And as there began to be wars and rumors of wars among all the nations which belonged to the mother of abominations, the angel spake unto me, saying: Behold, the wrath of God is upon the mother of harlots; and behold, thou seest all these things—
17 And when the day cometh that the wrath of God is poured out upon the mother of harlots, which is the great and abominable church of all the earth, whose founder is the devil, then, at that day, the work of the Father shall commence, in preparing the way for the fulfilling of his covenants, which he hath made to his people who are of the house of Israel.
18 And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me, saying: Look!
19 And I looked and beheld a man, and he was dressed in a white robe.
20 And the angel said unto me: Behold one of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
21 Behold, he shall see and write the remainder of these things; yea, and also many things which have been.
22 And he shall also write concerning the end of the world.
23 Wherefore, the things which he shall write are just and true; and behold they are written in the book which thou beheld proceeding out of the mouth of the Jew; and at the time they proceeded out of the mouth of the Jew, or, at the time the book proceeded out of the mouth of the Jew, the things which were written were plain and pure, and most precious and easy to the understanding of all men.
24 And behold, the things which this apostle of the Lamb shall write are many things which thou hast seen; and behold, the remainder shalt thou see.
25 But the things which thou shalt see hereafter thou shalt not write; for the Lord God hath ordained the apostle of the Lamb of God that he should write them.
26 And also others who have been, to them hath he shown all things, and they have written them; and they are sealed up to come forth in their purity, according to the truth which is in the Lamb, in the own due time of the Lord, unto the house of Israel.
27 And I, Nephi, heard and bear record, that the name of the apostle of the Lamb was john, according to the word of the angel.
28 And behold, I, Nephi, am forbidden that I should write the remainder of the things which I saw and heard; wherefore the things which I have written sufficeth me; and I have written but a small part of the things which I saw.
29 And I bear record that I saw the things which my father saw, and the angel of the Lord did make them known unto me.
30 And now I make an end of speaking concerning the things which I saw while I was carried away in the spirit; and if all the things which I saw are not written, the things which I have written are true. And thus it is. Amen.

What does ya exPECT??

              Gee!

Why so many LDS threads? I think it’s because non-LDS Christians don’t “walk the walk” like most LDS’ers.

They’d rather bash ‘em than admire (and judge) them from their fruits.

I’m not LDS - but I admire the work they do and that they take care of those in their religion. I can’t say that about most of the Christians I know.

"Flat Earth" has been a part of this debate for some time, a term that was brought in by Godzilla, not me. It is not a personal attack, go back and read the thread.

SO sorry I didn't make clear what is so personal about your post:

U said: "I have observed you constantly engage in arguments which are circular, you bounce from any topic you are not "winning on" to a new topic (that's how we got so many topics in one post...) and you suddenly become the grammar police if that's all you've got. (A flat earth tactic If ever there was one)

I have observed that there IS a difference between saying "in my opinion",(1. A belief or conclusion held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof) and "I have observed" (...(1. To be or become aware of, especially through careful and directed attention; notice.)

Just a little note for your future reference.

In my opinion, flat earth is not personal.

“What does ya exPECT??”

Better! However, I realize that may be an unrealistic expectation.
