The events that took place after the destruction of the Nauvoo Expositor led to the assassination of Joseph Smith by an angry mob.
Joseph Smith is vilified by people who are not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints or the other Restorationist groups that split off from the main organization after its founder's death. But those who belong to what is termed the Restorationist Movement remember him as a martyr, and the prophet's assassination lives on as an important moment in their faith.
PING
I believe it.
I recall the tune of an old western called Maverick. Since I don’t remember the words, and only the tune, I offer only the South Park version: Dum-Dum-de-dum-dum. Dum Dum Dum. Dum dum dum dum dum dum.... You inspire me.
The bullet that killed Joseph Smith on the night of his assassinationwould hit him as he attempted to go out a window to draw attention away from the people who survived the event.
I suppose that is one way to see it.
Joseph Smith was fleeing the situation like a man caught in bed by his lover's spouse. - lol

The false prophet Joseph Smith was looking out for his own skin as usual..
Murdered in cold blood by a crazed lynch mob. Like a lamb to the slaughter. Joseph Smith, the Prophet of God, murdered in cold blood.
I trust that the "Restorationist Movement" includes Warren Jeffs and the FLDS Church?

Nope, never happened...
The false prophet Joseph Smith had a gun slipped into jail to him...
He was not a martyr...nor was he murdered in cold blood or otherwise...
He tried to shoot his way out of jail..
He murdered at least 2 men before some other man fired back at the murderer Joseph Smith in order to stop his murderous attack..
It was a fair right on the part of the man who stoped Joseph Smith...
Joseph Smith was the cold blooded murderer...
Bump for later read
Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God. You are not the first, nor will you be the last, to blaspheme his name and tell lies about him.
Sorry, she is right. He did have a gun and did shoot back. It wasn’t murder. It wasn’t martyrdom. It was a mob, and Joseph was trying to escape out the window when he was shot both inside and outside the building, but he did shoot back.
He was also a false prophet and the true blasphemer in this conversation.
evidence?
His biggest mistake was in writing polygamy into the Mormon canon. It really was just to justify his own sexual appetites. Smith and later his successor Brigham Young ran their domains as dictators.
Polygamy was/is fundamentally incompatible with western democratic values. It inevitably gives rise to evil behavior and the resemblance of the FLDS communities to Wahabi islamist extremism is no accident.
“...The matter of their having one six-barrelled and one single-barrelled pistol with them when assailed was because friends on parting from them left these fire arms with them as stated in a former chapter, under circumstances alike honorable and justifiable. These arms offered but a meager defense against the overwhelming odds of the assailants; nor did the Prophet use the pistol left with him until he had seen his brother shot to death from his side—not until he had looked into the dead face of that brother, calm but bullet-torn, did the war spirit native to his race—his revolutionary ancestry—rise within him and impel him to the conflict at the door where muskets were belching fire and death, where he stood for one splendid moment as some avenging spirit returning the fire of the mob. Much less or far more than mortal man must he have been not to have done what he did. And what he did in that supreme moment of trial and death, does not depreciate him in the esteem of Christian men, nor make him less a martyr to the mission given him of God. President McKinley’s and Roosevelt’s United States secretary of state, John Hay, was right when he said Joseph Smith put up a “handsome fight” in the prison; but it in no way detracts from the solemn fact of his martyrdom, and emphasizes the glory of his manhood.” (Comprehensive History of the Church, Vol.2, Ch.59, p.316 - p.317)”
You’ll have to accept the fact that many of us do not believe he was a Prophet. You will also need to accept the fact that he didn’t die without a fight. I’m not blaming him for fighting, but fight he did. Maybe he was trying to save his life, or maybe he figured to take some with him.
“The events that led up to the first Mormon prophet’s assassination “
Was he assassinated twice?
I don’t care what you believe. Let each man/woman believe as he/she will.
I believe Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God and your revisionist history is a lie. But you believe your version and will stake your life on it; then you are for lynch-mob justice.
I love my Church. It is the true Church. Jesus Christ is the Head. We have a Prophet today, a Prophet for the whole world, but only a remnant recognize him.
He had a gun and shot back, but the evidence indicates that his assailants were only wounded.
