More than once during these talks I referred to Luther and what always occurred to me as his destructive influence. I pointed out that even in such an admirable book as Rohan Butler's The Roots of National Socialism the spiritual origins of Nazism and Luther's influence had not been given the necessary importance. Then I was asked if I would be prepared to elaborate to themabout a dozen of the very senior boys, that ismy own views on Luther and Lutheranism. I agreedwith the proviso that they would be my own views and nothing else. Admittedly, I had read more on Luther and about Luther than on most other subjects. But I wanted to make it quite clear that I would not speak to them with the voice of a great authority, but would merely give them my own interpretation. I told them, moreover, that I should try to prove how dangerous it is to accept legends; and that the picture I had of Luther and his influence was thoroughly contradictory of the customary Luther of the legend.

Sometimes, it seems like flattery to assert that some such as myself, hate the RC edifice.
I hate some of the things the edifice does and stands for as they are UNBiblical and hostile to Christ and Father’s priorities.
However, I don’t hate chaff. It’s just not something I glorify. I could conceive of using it for mulch.
imho, failure to see the flaws in one’s mirror and in one’s primary reference group is a failure to mature. It’s kind of still at the level of believing in Santa Claus and the toothfairy.
I haven’t observed that Dr E violates tha Psalm at all.
Now the RC edifice on the other hand . . .
And that is because you lack the fullness of Truth and are mired in heresy.
Kertzer (history, Brown Univ.) expands on a theme he first developed in The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara (LJ 5/1/97). In his latest book, he exposes a trail of anti-Semitic papal policies and practices that stretched from the French Revolution to the era of the Final Solution. Kertzer argues that the modern popes and their minions helped create and perpetuate an anti-Semitic Catholic culture that facilitated the eventual extermination of six million European Jews. He asserts that despite occasional denunciations of the persecution of the Jews, the Roman Curia for political and theological reasons persistently demonized the European Jews by accusing them of such heinous crimes as the ritualistic murder of Christian children. His thesis is grounded on a thorough examination of recently released Vatican archival material and a penetrating analysis of Catholic journals and newspapers. Kertzer reveals a far more systemic pattern of papal anti-Semitism than even John Cornwell confronts in "Hitler's Pope" (LJ 5/15/99). His book promises to stir up considerable controversy and belongs on the shelves of both public and academic libraries. Jim Doyle, Sara Hightower Regional Lib., Rome, GA "Important...Fascinating...a riveting piece of historical detective work." -- The New York Times "Scrupulous...Significant and compelling." The Washington Post "The material is dynamite." -- The Times (London) "Popes Against the Jews"...demolishes the findings of "We Remember." -- The Boston Globe "This reviewer is grateful to Kertzer for having written such a compelling narrative. His thesis is shocking and disturbing... "An important book." -- The Irish Times "Riveting." -- Globe & Mail (Toronto) "Kertzer [has the] extraordinary ability to present the most painful, religiously radioactive material with a coolness that makes his findings...devastating...Its superb, meticulous scholarship is a benchmark by which other books on the subject must now be judged." The Forward "A profoundly well-documented book...It is a work of brilliant narrative quality, an oppressive, unremitting and enraging report on what may be the most lethal period of official and quasi-official Catholic anti-Semitism." -- Providence JournalThe Vatican's 1998 report "We Remember: A Reflection on the Shoah" purportedly exonerated the Church of complicity in the Holocaust. In "The Popes Against the Jews," David I. Kertzer argues that the report is "not the product of a Church that wants to confront its history." Kertzer's book refutes the Church's thesis that the Holocaust grew out of "an anti-Judaism that was essentially more sociological and political than religious." In fact, Kertzer asserts, those dimensions of European anti-Semitism developed "in no small part due to the efforts of the Roman Catholic Church itself." The racial laws of fascist Italy and the Nuremberg Laws of 1930s Germany, for example, were directly modeled on the Church's own rules governing treatment of Jews: until the collapse of the Papal States in the late 19th century, Jews living in these territories were forced to wear yellow badges and live in ghettos. Kertzer's arguments make for compelling reading because they're presented in story form, based on the actions of the popes themselves. Access to long-sealed Church archives allowed Kertzer to reconstruct some of the most shocking, secret conversations that occurred in the Vatican in the decades leading up to World War II. -- Michael Joseph Gross
Even the title screams outrageously.
But where are the Prottys sitting on the abuse button?
I doubt a single Protty has wailed or whined or pressed the abuse button a single time.
But boy, let the Prottys post a serious study topic that jangles the thin-skinned, hyper-sensitive, embrionic level sensibilities of the RC reps and the wailing and whining and sitting on the abuse button doesn't let up unless the thread is pulled.
And these folks think THAT represents something we should
Reviews by Catholics are to be considered not worthy, but recommendations by those with an axe to grind against the Catholic church are? How convenient. By the way, the quote, while written by a Catholic, was taken off a website for Calvin College. Apparently they thought it was worthy enough to warrant consideration.
In any case, here is one by a non-Catholic I had ready since I anticipated you'd be casting aspersions: Blood Libel. Scroll down to page 28. Here is the first paragraph:
Insulting Dr. E’s intelligence? Hah! You won’t get far with that.
It came from his arrogance and pride.
Yes,he was. And that occultism spread a great deception over all Germany and that’s how he got away with so much.
Forgive them for they know not what they say. LOL.
The poison in their souls evident here secretes from the evil that grows out of self-denial of the Holy Sacraments and their allegiance to the Traditions of Men like the deranged anti-Semite Martin Luther and the virally-poisonous peeping-tom Jean Cauvin.
860,000 SURVIVING JEWS know the truth, but you want to deny they even exist.
Oh I don’t know. I have not seen anything but cutting and pasting. Any stuffed shirt can do that.
I will thank you in advance for ceasing your use of my bandwidth.
A blatant lie.
Free speech, and all.
It's helpful if you keep in mind that most Jews who find themselves in the position of defending the church in Rome are those Jews who still desire the Vatican's approval of Israel's very right to exist.
Those who speak out about the complicity of Rome before, during and after the war owe nothing to anyone other than the truth.
Evidently his two year old took over his keyboard.
Agreed.
Insulting a stone would be equally fruitless.
Were there even a billion Catholics in WWII?
I understand.
Sooner or later the truth hurts us all.
