Mormonism increasingly draws Spanish-speakers as converts

Spanish-speakers are fueling growth in the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which recently opened new worship space on Tucson's predominantly Hispanic South Side.

Many local Mormon worshippers, like 47-year-old Juan Arroyo, converted to the faith from Catholicism while living in their native countries. Arroyo, a roofer who has four children, joined the church when he lived in Guadalajara, Mexico. He's been in the United States for seven years.

"I was missing something, and my life changed greatly after meeting the missionaries," he said in Spanish.

Nationally, the number of Spanish-speaking congregations in the Mormon church grew by 64 percent between 2000 and 2006. There are 639 such congregations in the United States.

The church is growing quickly in Mexico.

Church officials say its presence there began in 1875 when Brigham Young, then denomination president, called on six missionaries from Salt Lake City to bring Spanish-language materials about the church to Mexico. In 1885, a group of nearly 400 colonists from Utah arrived at northern Mexico's Casas Grandes River. Mexico's first stake was created in Colonia Juárez in 1895. By 1912, more than 4,000 members had settled in Chihuahua and Sonora.

More than 1 million members now live in Mexico, a predominantly Catholic country with a population of about 108 million.

Tell me why, if smitties’ first vision was so crucial its account wasn't included in the first edition of mormon history? Why there were at least 3 different versions from smittie himself? Could he not tell a consistent story?

++++++++++++++++

If you believe what you just said, then you must also believe Paul's (or “paulsies’” in the same degrading way you say Smith) first vision was not true. He told the account in different ways in different places in the Bible.

As for the rest, they have been addressed from time to time here at FR.

You are just again repeating a lot of stuff that you are not to answer for yourself, lest you discoverer the “anties” have not been complete with their information. I could give the answers again and again, but few would believe. If you want to know for yourself, the information is easy to find. If you find it you will be better able to decide if you want to believe it. Or you can be happy with what you already know, if you are happy with half.

I pray that they do.........

After your comment, I went back and reread post 466 and found that by using the definition of a “failed prophecies” that the Tanneres and other antis use, you just proved the New testament is false.

Be careful of your standards and who you are in common with for your common sense.

We Christians agree on the way to be saved...

+++++++++++++

That is one of the questions I keep asking and no one will answer.

What is the ONE WAY Christians are saved?

Yes, that’s why it’s easy to identify Joseph smith as a false prophet...

Where is the true living Prophet of God today that the Bible teaches of?

Then too, Christ is our head, not a prophet - thats biblical too.

Christ is the head of our Church, and he speaks to us through His Prophets.

No, actually the Biblical standard is very clear and straightforward. A true prophet will always speak the truth. How well have lds’ living prophets and seers done in this category f? Do you want a list of Smiths, Youngs, etc false prophecies? How about the false translations of materials - or the failure of the living prophet and seer at the time to recognize such?

++++++++++

Enough has been said about people mis representing our Prophets and others being happy with half truths, so I will ask you this.

Where are the people you think are the true Prophets the Bible speaks of being sent to us?

Every place it tells you to be careful of false prophets, it does not say anything about “no” Prophets. You were warned this way because their are to be true Prophets.

This has been a personal question that I asked way beck when, when I was one of your so called “true christians”

What is the one way to be saved, and why are there other “true christians” that say it is a different, even sometimes conflicting, way.

You have just said to me that you are one of the people who does not care about us. You come here and tell us we are wrong, then you do not want to understand more about us.
You are trying to prove something to us, yet you are happy with only the half truths the antis give you.

And yes, this is a personal summery of what I have seen you do here.

If you believe what you just said, then you must also believe Paul's (or “paulsies’” in the same degrading way you say Smith) first vision was not true. He told the account in different ways in different places in the Bible.

Ahhhhh, significant difference here. Paul's accounts are not contradictory, whereas smitties' are. First off, pro-lds sites present the information

http://www.mormonthink.com/

So lets compare smitties accounts 1832 - earliest version by smitties own hand found in History, 1832, Joseph Smith Letterbook 1, pp.2,3, in the handwriting of Joseph Smith (See An American Prophet’s Record, edited by Scott Faulring, Signature Books, 1989, p.5; The Personal Writings of Joseph Smith, compiled by Dean Jessee, Deseret Book, 1984, pp. 5-6; Early Mormon Documents, vol.1, compiled by Dan Vogel, Signature Books, 1996, pp. 26-31)
I've read internet context, so unless you can specify my error here, here are the details
Smith started serious study of the scriptures at age 12; Felt convicted of sins; Determined all churches were wrong; No mention of a revival; Omits money-digging context; Occured at age 15 (in his 16th year); Location not clear and had a vision of the Savior – Jesus Christ

1834-35 Next recantation is found in LDS periodical Messenger and Advocate, Kirtland, Ohio, Dec. 1834, vol.1, no.3

Again, in summary
A revival stirred in him a desire to “know for himself of the certainty and reality of pure and holy religion.” Desired to know if a Supreme being did exist, and wanted manifestation that his sins were forgiven. Occured when he was age 17 (1823); He was in his bedroom; Had a vision of an angel and was told sins were forgiven and Lord would do a work through him; Told about gold plates and their location.

1838 "Official Version" Joseph Smith — History, 1:7-20. Though written in 1838, it was not published until 1842 in Times and Season, March 15, 1842, vol. 3, no. 10, pp. 727-728, 748-749, 753.

In summary again:
A local revival caused him to wonder which church was right, it had never occurred to him all were wrong; His age was 14 (1820); he was in a grove; had a vision of two personages; One identifies the other as his son (by implication God the Father and Jesus, but not explicitly stated) ;Was told all churches are wrong and is to join none of them ;Claimed to come under great persecution Fell into all kinds of temptations.

These are all lds sources. I've not included the accounts by smith to Peter Bauder (1830), Joshua (1835), Erastus Holmes (1835) or second hand accounts/understandings from Smith's closest circle and later prophets and seers of mormonism.

Questions arise almost immediately - how old was he (14, 15, or 17)? Where was it (bedroom, 'grove' or unknown)? Who/what appeared to him (an angel, Jesus alone or both the Father and Jesus)? Was there or was there not a revival? I read the various accounts, so where are they incomplete?

You say that leaving something out of one version and having it in another is proof it is false. (Paul did this)

And you think it is proper to use what other people say as if Brother Joesph said it.

and from what you just said, you have not studied it four yourself.
