Mormonism increasingly draws Spanish-speakers as converts
Arizona Daily Star ^ | March 8, 2008 | Stephanie Innes

Spanish-speakers are fueling growth in the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which recently opened new worship space on Tucson's predominantly Hispanic South Side.

Many local Mormon worshippers, like 47-year-old Juan Arroyo, converted to the faith from Catholicism while living in their native countries. Arroyo, a roofer who has four children, joined the church when he lived in Guadalajara, Mexico. He's been in the United States for seven years.

"I was missing something, and my life changed greatly after meeting the missionaries," he said in Spanish.

Nationally, the number of Spanish-speaking congregations in the Mormon church grew by 64 percent between 2000 and 2006. There are 639 such congregations in the United States.

The church is growing quickly in Mexico.

Church officials say its presence there began in 1875 when Brigham Young, then denomination president, called on six missionaries from Salt Lake City to bring Spanish-language materials about the church to Mexico. In 1885, a group of nearly 400 colonists from Utah arrived at northern Mexico's Casas Grandes River. Mexico's first stake was created in Colonia Juárez in 1895. By 1912, more than 4,000 members had settled in Chihuahua and Sonora.

More than 1 million members now live in Mexico, a predominantly Catholic country with a population of about 108 million.

Thanks for the encouragement all! I need it and so appreciate all of your various postings!! (I’m still trying to wrap my brain around how Mormons could continue to remain so deceived with all the evidence to the contrary.....)

. Multiple, conflicting versions of the ‘first vision’

2. Condemned and illegal - yet practiced anyway then ‘revealed’ ok, then revoked yet practiced elsewhere doctrine of polygamy.

3. Book of Breathings and Kinderhook plates along with fraudlent-yet-accepted by LDS GA translations

4. Mormon non-archaeology

5. thousands of changes in the most perfect book over the past 150 some ought By the number of conflicts among you folks, that rely on the Bible alone, you have no solid base to stand on. Come back and teach the Bible when you can agree on what it says.

Dozens of mormons who don't believe SLC LDS doctrinal watering down. Why should we accept you anymore than RLDS or FLDS who consider you to be a non-mormom. Perhaps I can fix your confusion for you

Come back and teach the BibleBOM when you can agree on what it says.

++++++++++

Another person who chooses the teachings of the ANTI sites, and did not take time to learn and understand how God's Gospel really fits together.

Our God is the one starts with the Capital letter, the LDS god is the little g.........and our GOD isn't confused, you are. You are the one thinks he's going to become 'a god' along with millions of other Mormons. I hear the serpent hissing again......

If, you could find the ONE WAY in the Bible, and come up with non-conflicting doctrines from the Bible alone, you would have a base to stand on.
I already did, and cited the scripture references. Its not my problem if you won't believe any of them. Its not my place to MAKE you believe, if I could I would. Its up to the Holy Spirit to draw you to Himself. So ultimately your rejection of truth will ultimately be your problem since I can 100% guarantee you if you continue on your present course Jesus WILL say to you ...depart from Me I never knew you. And that comes straight out of Scripture which you refuse to believe. It won't stop me from speaking the truth however. And, since you've now been shown the truth even though you still willfully reject it, your blood will be on your own head.....I now have a clear conscience.....

As it is, you have the conflicting thoughts of men who create their own groups and denominations. There are too many who “speak for God” with conflicting words.

You mean like Joseph Smith and all his followers?????? Those conflicting opinions???? How about that REFORMED LDS group or how about those groups which still practice polygamy and claim the Salt Lake City LDS to be in error???? Gee I think I see denominations there! THOSE CONFLICTING OPINIONS PERHAPS?

Your “god” of the Bible is very confused, just look at the different teachings you have come up with.

My God (big G) knows exactly what's up, He's not confused at all. But you are, again not my problem that some men can't accept the plain teaching of Scripture and try to reach God on their own terms instead of God's terms. My teachings have been entirely consistent thank you and so have His! On the other hand you do have that little problem of different teachings by Mormon apostles and prophets. First polygamy, then the govt gives you a hard time and suddenly a new revelation no polygamy allowed....then there's that little treatment of african americans bearing the ‘curse of cain’ thing and can't hold the priesthood, then when you're struggling to gain African converts suddenly poof there's a new revelation again....and so on it goes.....yeah, huh uh, different teachings...sure thing.......(Yawn)

You even fight among yours as to who got the meaning of the words of the Bible right.

Just where did you get this idea from???? My church is entirely consistent and united and no infighting. Oh, I get it the various denominations routine again???? Well geez louise, even the LDS has DENOMINATIONS! Again, how about that RLDS group eh? If you are going to apply the existence of denominations as proof there is no truth you'd better leave the LDS post haste and become agnostic. If you DON'T leave it, you've just been exposed as a hypocrit.

So stop telling us we are wrong, tell us why your way is the TRUE WAY, instead of the other understandings of the Bible.

Sorry bud but I'm merely repeating what Christ ALREADY said.....John 14:6......”Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” And again in Acts 4:12......”Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Notice Christ NEVER MENTIONED JOSEPH SMITH!!!!!! You have a problem with the TRUE WAY which opposes the LDS take it up with him.

By the number of conflicts among you folks, that rely on the Bible alone, you have no solid base to stand on. Come back and teach the Bible when you can agree on what it says.

Again not my problem you can't understand the Bible and see nothing but conflicts. I don't see any myself. But hey, straighten out the conflicts within the LDS and the RLDS first and then we'll talk. Geez louise, you LDS can't even keep your OWN doctrines straight or AGREE on what the Book of Mormon should say and so its undergone at last count at LEAST 3,500 changes since written!!!! You can't even keep your OWN CHURCH consistent in just over 150 years and you want to hurl accusations at mainstream Christianity which has been around for over 2,000??? LOL!! Although in all fairness when you have a ‘living prophet’ you can change whatever you want to and when challenged hey, just claim a new ‘vision’ or new ‘revelation’ of the LORD! This of course enables you to ignore all the doctrinal changes and dare I say it - conflicts - within the LDS itself. LOL!! Seems to me the pot is calling the kettle black here.....Conflicts, conflicts, conflicts.........

You really should read “The Changing World Of Mormonism” by Jerald and Sandra Tanner here: http://www.utlm.org/onlinebooks/changecontents.htm

Yeah, yeah I know its a ‘hate site’ yadda yadda yadda. Too bad for you its got copies of original source documents, along with original source citations from your OWN LEADERS gleaned from the vaults in Salt Lake City. Again (Yawn). I submit you won't review any of these quote ‘hate sites’ unquote because you are AFRAID to.....

Being me ONE WAY to be saved, and not the many, conflicting choices you give now.

I assume you mean BRING instead of being. And I already did - John 14:6 for starters. Hint: And its not through the LDS or through Joseph Smith or any other MAN.

And, learn more then the anti sites teach you.

Yet another deceived Mormon who refuses to objectively examine the original source EVIDENCE of the teachings of JOSEPH SMITH and PROPHETS of the LDS presented at the ANTI sites for fear of having his belief system challenged.........

We understand. Its much easier to believe in that "I'm going to be a god someday" thing..........

What? Green beans coming down from Planet Zork to diddle a few soul kittens, who promptly morph into jell-o blobs scooching and squarching about?

Meanwhile Jesus and Satan play a cosmic game of craps to see who gets to follow up with a good old-fashioned crucifixion? (The winner gets this.)

Then someone stole the cheese, so everyone settles down in the Americas. (The Holy Land was too hot anyway, yeah?)

Simple, easy doctrine.

I went through that, with true intent, many years ago, and found the teaching from the antis, which you also follow, are good at giving you man made feelings, feelings designed to keep you from wanting to study hard, to find what we really say.

There are even some here that have said they do not care what the context of their sound bite is, they will just keep using the understanding the want it to have.

Standard answer, “Do not study the LDS teachings, make the crowd think of something else.”

It is a good question, save it and bring it back, after this one is solved.

Ah, refuse to answer the question.....good rebuttal....(sarc)

P.S. - I ALREADY ANSWERED YOURS! With scripture after scripture no less............The only reason its not solved in your mind is because you REFUSE to believe it!

So, back to the RLDS............

My God is the God of the Bible, Jesus Christ...

You need to talk to Him...

I have not control over God...

And I have no complaints about God either...

God is absolute and Truth...

He is awesome and amazing...

God the Father sent Jesus, His ONLY begotten Son to die in my place in order to save my from the penalty for my sins...

Jesus was born of a virgin who had NEVER had sex with anyone, mortal or immortal...

Mary did NOT conceive in a “natural” fashion...

My God is not confused...nor is he a liar...

What He says He will do, ALWAYS comes to pass...

I love God and He loves me...

I read many posts by mormons that claim their god loves all his “spirit children”...

I do not recall EVER reading one that stated that the mormon FReeper loved God...

as in “I love God”

A photograph of two pages from the Young Woman's Journal, vol. 3. This was published by the Young Ladies' Mutual Improvement Associations of Zion in 1892. Notice that O. B. Huntington claimed that Joseph Smith taught the moon was inhabited.

I love the part where Joseph Smith believed the moon was inhabited...............Gotta love those fuzzy man made feelings eh?

Fred, the Flyingt Inmans do do belong to ONE GROUP...

A quick survey of us would show that we have Roman Catholics, Methodists, Baptists, Presbyterians, Pentecostals, et al among us...

We are all from different “groups” but all believe the same cohesive gospel...

Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life...

And that He was born of a virgin who never had sex with a man, or a god, mortal or immortal, in order to conceive...

and died on the cross to save us...

There are no conflicting answers in the Bible..

Only the Word of God...

So stop telling us we are wrong, tell us why your way is the TRUE WAY, instead of the other understandings of the Bible.

Your founder did not do this.

Why would we have to meet a higher standard than him?

http://scriptures.lds.org/en/js_h/1/19#19
17 It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!
18 My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join.
19 I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.”
20 He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me, which I cannot write at this time. When I came to myself again, I found myself lying on my back, looking up into heaven. When the light had departed, I had no strength; but soon recovering in some degree, I went home. And as I leaned up to the fireplace, mother inquired what the matter was. I replied, “Never mind, all is well—I am well enough off.” I then said to my mother,
“I have learned for myself that Presbyterianism is not true.”
